Blender Girl Smoothies

BlenderGirlGreenMojito1_Wide600

While we embrace the green smoothie lifestyle with both arms, even we often feel like there just aren’t enough hours in the day to get it all done.

You might know the feeling, too. You know, you wake up too early, you get the kids packed up and dropped off at school, then you sit down to work through that 20-email pile-up in your inbox, take care of projects, schedule appointments, run errands… by the time 5 PM rolls around you’re about ready to head straight to whatever fast food chain is around the corner – just to get dinner over with asap.

These are the moments blending a green smoothie can feel exhausting.

But, they’re also the exact moments you should be leaning on them the most!

That’s what I absolutely adore about our “sister in kale,” Tess Masters. I got her first book, The Blender Girl, when I wanted some new recipes to blend.

Tess lives and breathes the wellness mission of a healthier body, happier life. Her brand new book, The Blender Girl Smoothies, takes the guesswork right out of choosing the best smoothie to make, based on your mood, energy levels, and the flavor you’re craving.

When we share far and wide about how easy health can really be… everybody wins.

Here’s a recipe from her book…

Green Mojito   |  Serves 2

This is a cold-and-flu buster and potent detoxifier, all in one zesty cocktail! The bromelain in pineapple suppresses coughs and loosens mucus, while mint clears respiratory congestion, soothes sore throats, and alleviates nausea. The vitamin C in limes has antibiotic power, anti-inflammatories in kale and pineapple combat arthritis, and ginger boosts immunity, aids digestion, and adds a powerful zing.

1 cup (240ml) coconut water or water
1 teaspoon finely grated lime zest
3 limes, peeled and quartered
1 cup (25g) torn-up curly green kale leaves (1 or 2 large leaves with stalk removed)
1/2 cup (18g) firmly packed mint
2 cups (320g) frozen pineapple
5 drops alcohol-free liquid stevia, plus more to taste

Throw all of the ingredients into your blender and blast on high for 30 to 60 seconds, until smooth and creamy.

Boosters:
1 teaspoon wheatgrass powder
1 teaspoon minced ginger
1 teaspoon coconut oil”

Having difficulties with measurements and also having an idea of what’s healthy to put in a smoothie, especially for weight loss

The biggest hurdle is to always have fresh ingredients on hand. It’s also hard sometimes to find time enough (for example the mornings are horrible and that’s why I usually eat raw porridges for breakfast). It would be nice to learn more quick recipes based on “regular” ingredients.

My biggest hurdle is time! As a full time working mom of two, it’s hard to find time to shop for the right ingredients, have them ripe when I need them, and the cleanup afterwards! I love having a nutrient packed smoothie while on the run with the kids 😉

The biggest thing that gets in the way for me is making a smoothie first thing in the morning without waking up the rest of my household. Blenders are so loud!

r much for track and field so hurdles aren’t my thing, but I’ve found I’ve needed to clear a few as time has gone on. In the case of my health I started drinking a green smoothie everyday and that alone has brought its own challenges. The literal hurdles I jump to get to my green smoothies are Lego buildings and hot wheels in my path (thanks to my kiddo). But, since being stationed in South Korea, the biggest problem has been limited produce at the commissary or the language barrier at the local market. Also, have you ever seen an oriental melon? Being creative, being creative with produce that is native to South Korea is my biggest hurdle to making green smoothies. That is my final answer.

Nothing really gets in the way of my blending smoothies. Oh just maybe when I forget to go shopping after work and have to wait until Trader Joe’s opens to buy my fruits and veggies. Than I can make my smoothie!!

Having the right blender. My old blender can’t handle all the green goodness I want to put in it, along with the supplements like chia and nuts and yogurt and so on. I need a better blendy tool!!

My biggest hurdle is that I don’t take the time to plan ahead as often as I should. I’m a teacher and I leave early in the morning. Some mornings I just don’t have time to blend and clean. So I grab a bar and I’m out the door. I should make the freezer bags ahead of time!

My biggest hurdle is coming up with healthy green juice & smoothie recipes that my family will like. I hate that they miss out on something so beneficial for them because of taste.

Getting the right ingredients at the store and time to prepare while my kids are whining and crying…plus a very antique blender that I got from my mother in law….

The hardest part about smoothies is making a recipe I love that is healthy too. I tend the make u heathy smoothies with way to much sugars or I make awful tasting healthy ones that I can barely keep down.

My biggest hurdle: my laziness and my motivation! If I set my mind, then I do it, but till then I eat comfort food:-) the first mango detox is waiting for tomorrow morning after our international move.

Living in Namibia, my biggest hurdle is keeping good produce on hand – especially greens! I’ve started hoarding and freezing spinach when I can find it, and will use things like borage leaves, prickly pear, and persimmon in place of ingredients I can’t get here. The rainy season is amost here, so I’ll be planting my greens garden soon!

Mt biggest hurdle when it comes to green smoothies is repeatition. I find myself having the same ones over and over and fi d it tiring searchinv the web for recipes. I find when i have the recipes in front of me and can tag favourite recipes i stick to them more consistently which is great for when life throws us curves and cant invest the time to keep all meals super healthy asse would like. Green smoothie are that sure way to fill the gap!!

My biggest challenge is in planning. I don’t often have time to figure it out in the mornings. I need to make up some smoothie bags!
