The Clean Beauty Giveaway

It’s time to come clean, about your beauty routine. So many of us put great effort into living a healthy lifestyle – we eat our seasonal spring veggies from the farm, we practice yoga, we do cardio, we blend our green smoothies – but what about our skin? Our skin is our largest organ and it definitely deserves the same attention.

You absorb up to 60% of everything you put on your skin.

Not to scare you – but regulation on beauty products here in the US isn’t really rawkin’ it. In the US, there is no governmental task force inspecting chemicals and ingredients used in personal care items. Seriously, no one is looking to make sure your moisturizers, serums and makeup are safe for use. So ingredients like aluminum, found in antiperspirants, have free reign to run through your body, even though they’ve been scientifically linked to certain cancers, endocrine disruption and alzheimer’s disease. Yikes!

However, that’s not the case in other parts of the world. In Europe, over 1,300 toxic substances are banned from personal care products. In the United States, only 11 ingredients are prohibited by the FDA, with the last US cosmetic law being passed in 1938. So that means we need to take charge + do the research ourselves. Can’t rattle off all of the internationally banned substances? Us either!

That’s why we love Copal Clean Beauty – our friend + founder Jennie Fresa has done the work for us, creating a curated collection of new & noteworthy clean beauty brands for women nationwide. Copal was born out of a deepened desire to help all women make smarter choices with their cosmetics.

4 steps to transition to clean beauty

Thinking it’s time for you to make the change? Why not start here:

  • Simplify your beauty products and learn which ingredients to avoid.
  • Get informed. Download 2 helpful resources that will help you determine the safety of your products before you buy them: ThinkDirty and SkinDeep.
  • DIY: There are many products that can be made right at home. If you’re on a budget or if you like to get crafty, check out Mountain Rose Herbs on-line.
  • Prioritize: It can be very overwhelming to switch all of your personal care products all at once so don’t try it! Start with your skincare (cleanser and moisturizer). Then, your makeup (foundation and lipstick). Next body care: change your soap and deodorant. Hair care and other household items can come late.

I’d really love to find (and use!) natural acne products that actually work! I hate having to choose between clear skin (and nasty harsh chemicals) and natural products (and breakouts).

I’d love to find the perfect primer because I hate having oily skin which causes my face to break out and others cause my skin to be extremely dry which leads to my skin cracking when I go outside in the cold. Healthy looking and radiant skin would definitely help improve confidence!!

I would like to find a ‘Au Naturale’ deodorant. I have been using antiperspirants for years. I know there are harmful chemicals in them but making the switch has not be a success story for me. I have tried plenty of natural, unscented, non- aluminum, all organic but so far nothing has worked. I would like to switch for the fact that my body perspires a lot and I would like to at least have a graceful scent that can mask the sweat smell and benefit my body overall.

This is a great article! Thank you for the information about Copal! The one thing that I’m really looking to change is my deodorant – that is probably the most unnatural thing I’m currently using on my body.

I’d love to switch over to a clean mascara. Mascara is something that I wear most days and I have been dragging my feet about changing over to a clean version because I have a belief that the clean versions are not as effective… and clean versions are typically much more expensive than drug store versions, so it is hard to shell out the money and then possibly be very disappointed. Thank you for the great article!

I would love to switch over to a more natural moisturizer. I have been reading up on the crazy stuff that can get put in our beauty products.

I would love to switch over to a natural cleanser because I feel like the not so natural cleansers leave residue behind which may cause clogs and breakouts – which ultimately defeats a cleansers’ purpose!

I need a natural moisturizer. Skin after 50 is so dry. A safe clean alternative would be great.

I would love to try a clean foundation that doesn’t dry out my sensitive skin. My skin always feels so dry and tight or just plain oily with moisturizers no matter what I’ve tried. Feeling the effects.. ☹️

I would love to switch to a clean moisturizer and mascara. Finding a good moisturizer that nourishes but also mattifies my combination skin is a challenge and finding a clean mascara is especially important given how delicate and sensitive the eye and area surrounding it are.

After years of being a traditional “product junkie”, I transitioned into the natural world of body care. I now use minimal product with ingredients as close from the Earth as possible. The one product habit I cannot seem to break from conventional to natural, however, is deodorant. Also, I am still looking for my go-to natural shampoo.
