A few years ago, I started on a journey to healthy eating. It wasn’t easy and it didn’t happen all at once. It started slowly with one simple habit: drinking one green smoothie a day. That was just the beginning. Once I started to notice the positive changes, I craved more and took further steps on the journey to better health. And my family was impacted by this journey too.
All of us are on this journey together, and healthy eating looks different for everyone.
What constitutes “healthy” for one person may not be “healthy” for another person. There is zero judgment from us on what that looks like for you, and it is up to you to decide.
Do you have to be a hardcore vegan? No way! (Unless that’s your journey and we support you!) Listen, we still eat chocolate cake, pizza, bacon burgers, French fries, and even candy—we just don’t go crazy overboard. We listen to our bodies and know our limits. It’s perfectly okay to drink a green smoothie every morning and enjoy a scoop of ice cream after dinner!
So, instead of telling you in exact detail how your journey to healthy eating needs to look, we’re sharing our top five tips that we’ve learned along the way. Maybe you’ll find one or two of them helpful.
1. Start with one healthy habit a day.
As we said, drinking one green smoothie a day was where we both started. And if you want to start there, hooray! That’s why we’re here (totally recommend signing up for this Simple 7). But it could be a step as simple as drinking enough water to stay hydrated, or adding an extra serving of veggies at dinnertime. It might even be cooking dinner at home instead of eating out. Whatever that step is, however small it may seem, go for it! You can do this and we’re cheering you on.
2. Listen to your body.
We aren’t fans of making drastic changes all at once. It not only sets you up for failure, but it doesn’t feel so great either. Start to listen to your body. How do you feel when you eat certain foods or do certain activities? Let your body guide you. We bet you’ll notice that you feel better with each (small) healthy choice you make.
3. Forgive yourself.
Be imperfect! Embrace it! And most of all, if you stumble a little along the way, keep going. Don’t stop. Pick yourself up and keep trudging along. Making changes, especially ones like healthier eating, can be difficult to do. Give yourself time—and remember our #1 tip of starting with one small habit. Allow yourself room to breathe and make lasting changes. And remember, you don’t have to be perfect. Perfection is not the goal. This is a journey full of ups and downs. Embrace it and keep moving forward.
4. No food bullying your friends (or anyone)!
Oh, man! Eating is definitely not a one-size-fits-all kind of thing. Our food and eating philosophy centers around doing what is best for you. Seek that out and if you’re excited and want to share it, then go for it! But allow others to figure out what’s best for their body, too. The best change happens in a loving, safe, supportive environment. And that goes for bullying yourself too (see tip #3).
5. Don’t be afraid of the next step.
Once you master that first healthy habit, move on to the next one. Here are some ideas to help you on your journey:
- Pack a healthy lunch instead of eating out
- Cook dinner at home (We’ve created our Let’s Eat meal plan to help you!)
- Drink more water
- Start growing a garden
- Buy healthy ingredients in bulk and cook large batches for the week (rice, beans, quinoa, etc.)
- Join a CSA
- Make and stick to a healthy eating budget
- Try a new food each week (veggies, fruit, cuisine, etc.)
- Find a new recipe to try
And don’t be afraid to ask family and friends if they’re interested in joining you. The journey is more fun when you share it with others.
