Self Care Tips for Busy Days

This self care tips article is a part of my Wellness Spring Training series, a FREE 3-part workshop that’ll help you discover the secret sauce to losing weight, gaining energy & fueling your passions this spring.

( Download your free PDF Workbook towards the bottom of the post. )

Confession: I used to think self care was a completely selfish thing. It was one of those trendy words that people used to justify doing whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. It usually involved in-home-thousands-of-dollar saunas, weekly green juice delivery and swanky Thailand vacations.

That sorta stuff just doesn’t resonate with me.

It wasn’t until I read the book Essentialism that I saw a different side to self care. Through incorporating a variety of self care tips, I could see it was truly about making space in our lives to do the things that matter most to us… deep within our core. And that is what unleashes our passions to make the world a better place. Self care can ( and should!) look vastly different to each of us, and I believe that’s 100% okay.

What are examples of self care is…

Below are what I consider self care for me. Now, this list will look different for you, but this will at least allow you to see what it can look like.

  • Running 10+ miles each weekend to train for the Grand Canyon R3
  • Primitive camping with friends around a bonfire
  • Flying a twin-engine airplane
  • Making a delicious green smoothie
  • Taking a long, extra hot shower
  • Bi-monthly massages + chiropractor adjustments

What are the benefits of self care?

Living in a world that feels like it’s always going 100MPH and celebrates multitasking and climbing the corporate ladder, self care is MORE essential than ever before. If we don’t take time to get clear on our core values and intentionally nurture them, we’ll lose what makes us unique.

A few years ago, I felt like I was working or thinking about work all the time. I would try and unplug on the weekends, only to find myself on my phone while the kids would be running around the playground. My to-do list was crushing me. I thought the more I focused on it and crossed things off, the smaller the list would get. But it didn’t. Every day, more would get added to it by me… or others that I say YES to.

I realized that I had to change if I ever wanted to get out of this cycle.

Change is hard in the beginning. Messy in the middle. Gorgeous at the end.

Find a tribe to encourage you along!

By hiring a life coach (two, actually— one for my business and one for me personally), I was able to sift through the chaos, cry through some hardships, survive a business buyout and ground myself in truth.

The truth is we are all uniquely created to full fill a special purpose while here on Earth. We all matter and are worthy of love.

Through all of this, I learned that I had to make myself a priority IF I wanted to keep that tiny spark still burning in my soul… and truly change myself, my family, and the world for the better. These self care tips that I applied to my life from these sessions have dramatically transformed my spirit!

By doing this, I found myself waaaay happier and more passionate about other things too. My kids caught the enthusiasm and started dreaming bigger too— my daughter started competing as a gymnast, my son became a passionate cook in the kitchen and my husband competed in his first Tough Mudder. We all became happier and healthier people because of self care— it’s contagious and incredibly rewarding!

What are some self care activities?

I spent time trying to pinpoint activities that I truly enjoyed doing. This wasn’t an easy process— I had actually been so far removed from thinking this way, that it took some time to uncover a true “self care” activity that would fuel the flame inside of me. I had to think back to being a little girl when weekends felt forever long and chores lasted a mere 30 minutes.

I always loved watching airplanes fly overhead and spending hot afternoons at air shows with my dad. We loved airplanes and I always thought it would be cool to fly one. So I decided part of my new self care routine would be learning to fly an airplane. Now, I know this isn’t practical for everyone. And honestly, it wasn’t that practical for even me. But it was what I needed… and Ryan supported me embarking on this adventure.

Self Care Tips to Practice now

  1. Spend time outside: Getting physical is one of the best ways to boost endorphins and feel better quickly.
  2. Nourish your body: Embrace healthy-ish foods in your diet (in Spring Training #3, we’ll dive more into this)
  3. Shift your mindset: Constantly focusing on the negative side of things makes it difficult to feel full-filled. Practice adopting a mindset of gratitude and hope. This is one of the most life-changing self care practice you can incorporate— yet will takes lots of work.

Been looking for the right fit for physical exercise….was once Jazzercise and later spin classes…..now feeling like i need something different…..just TODAY found a 30 day challenge doing yoga, which I know zero about. I decided it was a gently way to get back in tune with myself, physically and mentally. It’s a small thing but after a year of change, (divorce, move, losing Dad and brother), I realize I’m thrown off balance. I want to incorporate self-care back into the mix. Live in the present. Breathe. Thanks for helping me find a place to start! 🙂 p.s. loved your Marie Farleo video!! Very inspiring! 🙂

You are right on about self help, we hate to admit that we neglect the most important one in our life, us or me in this case. Although I have spent most of my $$$ on others and been there for anyone that has asked, I find myself sitting here writing about how un organized and unhealthy I feel right this minute. I started your smoothie challenge and drifted away for unknow reasons, mostly because I did not hold myself accountable and thought I was in “healthy enough” condition. I AM NOT.
And as I type this I think how much better I felt on the “Challenge”.
Thank you for sending this to me and not giving up on those of us that have given up on ourselves.
I will get me back in order and start taking care of me so I then can help others in need, but me first.
There are many things that happened in my life as well as others including divorce, loss of job but those are just my excuses,
Yes they play a toll on us but it is no reason to not take care of ourselves.
I have deleted more “quick fix remedies” and tried about all of the vitamin supplements(which I have a shelve full of) to no avail.
As of writing this I pledge to myself that I will get on board with Simple Green and get my “Self Care” life in order.
Again “Thank you” for sticking with me and thank you for all of the information you are sharing.

Hey Lynn- thank you for sharing this with me. I feel like you are heading in a wonderful direction with all of this, as hard as it may be, I love your pledge and commitment to yourself right now. I also know it will help those around you too, as hard and uncomfortable it may be to do things just for yourself. Email me if you’re feeling alone in these and know the entire Rawkstar team has your back.

I am a semi empty nester who is self employed with a home office. Why cant I get this self care thing going and stick to it. I have a bad Mom habit of putting everything else first….kids, spouse, cooking, cleaning, work, etc. You would think it would be easy to fill that void of kids being gone with yourself but the struggle is real people!!!

  6. Jen Hansard

    March 19th, 2019 at 12:31 pm

The struggle is real BUT you are taking the first step right now. We have to retrain our brain (and trust our heart) to know self care is more valuable that we feel at the moment. You should also read Essentialism and Girl Wash your Face— both books have been super helpful in my life. Good luck Renee and I’m so happy you’re a part of our Spring Training.

I am going to put in a garden. I wanted to last year but slugged through it and didn’t. I did the Spring Cleanse in May last year and have been whole foods plant based ever since. And have been so happy!! So this year a garden will be perfect. You all have given me the incentive to get at it!! Thanks!!

    Hey Ann,

A garden sounds like a wonderful way to treat yourself. I am so glad that this came at the perfect time so you can pursue your passion of starting a garden. Also, love that you are thriving on a plant based lifestyle. It truly is amazing how our bodies feel when we take that extra time to take care of ourselves.

Right now, aside from fresh juices, am starting a program with several homeopathic remedies put together specifically for me, some herbal formulas and healthy eating. I have been feeling more tired than usual lately and that motivated me to have some testing done by my naturopathic doctor and get started with this new program.

Thanks for all of your ideas.

My self-care is around nature and family – that is my love language – quality time. I am hoping to focus on hiking and puddle stomping with my toddler as the weather gets nicer. My me time – home facial in an essential oil infused bath. Thanks for the reminder. We all seem to know self care is important, but it is more of a “yeah, yeah, when I get to it” in the back of our minds.

Yes, we are always putting it off. It’s crazy how long we can go without it. Glad we could help remind you to focus on what things really make you feel whole and vibrant!

    Cheers!!

I am so grateful for opening this email (of the hundreds that come thru daily). Between working full time from home, a toddler, 3 teenage boys and a husband, it seems like my journey to self care always ends before I reach the finish line. I’m always starting some of the things that I enjoy and then my busy life hits me. As my new journey to self care begins it looks like….COMPLETION! I’ve stated a garden but have yet to really get things finished up, joined a gym but have yet to attend an actual class. I really want to get back to enjoying ME instead of emails, Netflix, an occasional episode of Sesame street and anything else which does not add value to my life and the quality of it. I’m going to get back out in the garden and enjoy the sounds of nature, watch my toddler crumble the dirt between her fingers, get out for a walk on some of the trails nearby, indulge in a nice hot aroma therapy filled bath, continue to practice listening to bed time stories (they are magical) and meditate my filled little brain to sleep. I have truly come to the realization that I cant care for all of the other valuable people in my life in totality IF I have not filled my own tank. I am vowing to myself to get back to doing this today. I may not be who I was 5, heck even 10 years ago and that is OK with me.

    March 20th, 2019 at 11:19 am

    Hey Nikki,

You’ve got this and I know you can fulfill those much needed goals in your life. I feel inspired just listening to everything that gives you drive and passion to be your best self. We all change like you said, I am not who I was 5 years ago, and that is totally fine! We are constantly growing and changing and that is what life is about. Now we just have to give ourselves the self care that we need to keep up with these changes 🙂

    March 20th, 2019 at 10:59 am

Thanks Jen and SGS team for this email, I think I needed to hear this. And I actually took time this morning to read it all, so score one for me and slowing myself down. I’m in real need of some self-care and focusing on a few things that will put me in a better frame of mind and change my attitude (which is in need of an adjustment)! 🙂 I would like to start getting myself outside again for some small hikes. I am surrounded by the natural beauty of the forest and I’m not taking advantage of it. I know for a fact in the past it has helped lessen the stress or depression that might hit. Another thing I would like to focus on is the clutter that surrounds my home office. I know also from past experience that decluttering really has a profound affect on my mental and physical well being! Third I’d like to get myself back to focusing on healthier eating. I love doing the challenges and getting in the kitchen to make such delicious healthy meals. I love when I have my meals planned out. So I want to get back to focusing on that again. Baby steps in all of these goals but I need to start somewhere. Thanks for the push!

    Hey Natalie,

I am so glad that just reading this email you are already starting to take time for yourself. That is what self care is all about. It doesn’t have to be something big, but something that is important to us and that we don’t normally allow because we can’t “slow down”. I am excited to hear about your journey of self care and can’t wait to see how much it has made a difference in your life!

  21. Angela

    March 21st, 2019 at 10:40 pm

Wow, did I ever need to read this email! As a mother to two beautiful little people, wife to busy husband and partner in our travel/tour business I can honestly say that self care has not entered my world in some time. It tends to be the thing that is left to the end, the thing I will get to when everything else is done and I have time……And now the sad and scary thing is, I can’t off the top of my head come up with an activity I could do for self care. Clearly I have some soul searching to do. Thanks for pushing me to make this change for the better.

    March 22nd, 2019 at 3:40 pm

    Hey Angela,

Your story sounds all too familiar. Don’t feel like you need to have an answer for what self care means to you right now. It’s all about the journey and finding what works for you. What self care meant to you years ago might be completely different for you now 🙂

Well here I sit with lots of hope and desire. I am nearly 60… on a short leave of absence because my life is so full of anxiety. I have so many dreams and envision myself doing… but every time I come up short… I love love love to workout… I love to train for events… I enjoy helping people… I just can’t seem to follow through…I want to travel I want to be an urban dweller… I want to hike… how do I make this happen?

    March 22nd, 2019 at 3:47 pm

    Hey Beth,

Those are such amazing goals!! Try setting small goals that you know you can complete. That way you won’t get overwhelmed and feel like there is no way you will succeed. I know it can be difficult at times but start small and always feel proud of yourself once you finish something. I truly think you will be able to make all your dreams come true and now is the time to do it!

I started this year out with a focus on my own Wellness and self care. The energy that it took to keep up with it and life, quickly fizzled out. So, when I saw your email hit my inbox, I immediately remembered ME! You are definitely right when you said, self-care takes work. Heck, I even just forgot about it all together. I just kept saying I will do it later. Later has come and 3 months has gone by. No worries though, we shall start again. Funny how life works, many times in the past I would have totally condemned myself for the slack. Today I say, today is a new day for a new beginning to get it right. So this workshop came right on time. Now I can go into my birthday month, April, with a new found focus. Hmm, now just to figure out what my self-care looks like?!? That will be the challenge. Thank you for sharing this with us.

I am so glad our email showed up at the perfect time for you! It’s time to focus on you and we want to be there for you to make it happen. When thinking of a self-care routine, just think small about something you really enjoy that you normally put off. Like reading a book, a bike ride, or going to the beach. It could be anything as long as it brings you joy 🙂

I’m starting a new part-time job in a couple of weeks, so this post is right on time. Making time for self-care is about to be way more important for me. I’ve been so used to doing things on my own schedule, now that I’ll be away from home a couple of days a week I need to get on a schedule. My husband and I are hoping to start going on more nature trail hikes in our area. I also want to get back into an exercise routine at home as well as add in a regular weekly facial. We’ve come so far with adding smoothies and eating more like a Rawkstar the last few months, but we feel like it’s time to take it a few steps further.

    Hey Heather,

You sound like you are already on the path to succeed! Congrats on starting a new job, that is very exciting but like you said, less time for you. The nature walks and spa facials sound like a dream and I know you will make time for them. Like you said, you have been eating right but now it’s time to take it even further!
