Today, I thought I’d try something different on the blog. I want this to be a chance for you to ask me anything. Every day, thousands of people come to Simple Green Smoothies looking for healthy recipes and tips on living a healthier life. Yet I’m sure you have a very specific question you’d love to get my answer on. This is your chance.

For those of you that don’t know…

My name is Jen Hansard, and I co-founded Simple Green Smoothies in 2012.

Honestly, this was never meant to be a business. Green smoothies just became a personal passion that changed my life and I wanted to share them with anyone who would listen. We shared recipes on Instagram, built our very first website and hosted our very first green smoothie challenge. It was a hit! Thousands of people lost weight naturally, gained energy and boosted their immunes and have been rawkstars ever since. 

How a passion became a business

Since then, I took over the business, published two best-selling plant-powered recipe books, and created the #1 smoothie app, Daily Blends, with my amazing team and community. Simple Green Smoothies has morphed into a movement with a passionate community cheering us on. I’ve been blessed with our success and have committed to “give back” any way my heart guides me. So far, that’s been donating $17,500 to an amazing Mushroom Project in Cambodia, spending a week in the Bahamas doing hurricane relief work and hosting adventure retreats.

All of this is because green smoothies changed my life, and I think they can change yours too!

    Hi Jen,
    I have been doing your green smoothies for about 6 months now. I had been feeling great all this time. Yesterday, my annual lab results back and my Urine was very high on oxalates despite the fact that I was rotating greens on a weekly basis. How do I get rid of oxalates fast before they turn into kidney stones?

      Hi Lori. First of all, I think it’s awesome that you’ve been drinking delicious green smoothies and feeling great but I’m sorry to hear your lab results were not what you were expecting. Since we’re not doctors or nutritionists, I recommend that you speak with your healthcare provider. We want what’s best for you and your personal physician and/or nutritionist will be able to help you sort out this specific health concern.

        Thanks for the reply Jen.
        I am sure no one expects those results after eating lots of greens and fruit for six consecutive months 🙁
        I knew before starting on the smoothie journey that oxalates could potentially cause kidney stones. But I decided to take a leap of faith and embark on a “healthy” journey. Now I am waiting for CT scan results to see if I indeed developed any stones. As I am reading more about oxalates I am overwhelmed on how difficult it is to get rid of them. p.s. for all those people that are embarking on the smoothie journey please do it with caution and always consult with the experts! Sadly for me that is the end of smoothies.

    Hi Jen! I cannot go d my old book of your 21 day cleanse. In it was a recipe using “thai” brand red curry paste. It was a huge hit here for family dinner. Can you help w a link? It was a dinner meal in week 2 or 3…

    Hi Jen, is it possible to start a subscription service on iTunes so that I can pay for a monthly or yearly subscription through that format verse credit card autopay? Thank you for your consideration. By the way I have taken the 7 day smoothie challenge and it tasted great. I don’t like veggies but love the creative way to eat my veggies. Thank you again.

      Yet I’m not sure if that’s what you’re asking. If you’re referring to our membership program, Rawk the Year (http://sgs.to/rawk), which is a weekly plant-based meal, smoothie + snack planner… then that’s different. We can only do subscription through credit card for that since it’s hosted outside of iTunes. Feel free to email us directly and maybe we can find a creative solution to work for you. I’m sure we can help you!

    Hey Jen, I’d like to know your opinion on the subject of spinach. I never liked it very much, but putting it in smoothies is a perfect way to integrate it into my diet. So I started researching spinach. It’s benefits and what to look out for when buying it. There is this whole discussion going on about what parts of it are healthy and how the leaves should look to have the minimum amount of toxins. Also, is there a difference between frozen and fresh?

      Hey Mischa. (I love your name, btw). Spinach is the best leafy green to hide in a smoothie– you don’t even taste it! I was the same way… never liked it until I blended with it. I prefer fresh baby spinach (organic) because I think it creates a creamier green smoothie. When I’ve used frozen greens in the past, it has a stronger “green taste” and there is always more chunks. Also, fresh is quite affordable. I buy a bin at Costco for $5 and it lasts all week.

      When it comes to “what part to use and what not to” with spinach…I don’t worry about that. The fact that we’re eating spinach and fresh fruits over something made in a factory is a HUGE WIN in my book. And I feel great using the entire spinach leaf for the past 7 years. Someone is always trying to start the next trend and health craze…yet I believe as long as we stick to the most natural foods that are grown from the earth, we’re gonna be the healthier humans out there.

      Kale on the other hand— I never blend the stems because they are sooo bitter and ruin the taste of my delicious green smoothie. So I’ll either use baby kale or just pull the leaves off and blend those. Yet it has nothing to do with oxalates or toxins… I do it all because of taste.

      If someone has a health condition where they are hyper sensitive to toxins (like autoimmune disease) then that’s different. They have to listen to their body more closely and adjust based on their needs. Yet for most humans, the more plants we eat, the better.

    My question or concern is actually getting started on a plan and sticking to it without being tempted to eat food that the rest of the family is eating. Can I possibly see what the menus will look like before joining so I’ll know if it’s a menu that is suitable to me. How many meals are really necessary daily and is it necessary to add protein powder to your smoothies or do the daily greens have what you already need to suffice for that day?

      Hi Kris. I totally get this AND have had my own struggles.     Wondering what your stand/experience is in terms of oxalates. I have Hashimoto’s and grew concern when I read about the topic since I been drinking Delicious smoothies with lots of spinach (all from your smoothie book)

      Hi Lori. I truly believe we all respond differently to foods. I remember after two years of drinking a daily green smoothie with spinach I came across an article on oxalates and got a little nervous. Yet the truth is, I felt great doing daily spinach and saw no reason to change it. I know it’s a little different when you’ve got Hashimoto’s. I would say, just be aware and listen to your body.       Thanks Erin. 🙂 I would really like to hike Mt Whitney in California this year. I love the High Sierras and think it would be pretty cool to summit the highest peak in the lower 48 states.

      Fiber is gonna be the best thing, and green smoothies are packed with fiber since we blend the entire fruit (unlike juicing where the fiber is removed).     I just want to thank you for the tremendous info on smoothies. I just bought a Vitamix and cost me an arm and a leg but it was WELL WORTH it!!!

      Congrats Norman!!! The Vitamix is such a great blender. I remember buying my first one when we could barely even afford groceries.     What do you use to saute vegetables with? What kind of oil or fat?

      I pretty much only use 4 kinds of oil:
      coconut oil: I sauté with this the most. I have occasionally used refined coconut oil which has a higher smoke point, yet most often I just use my virgin unrefined oil and it’s been great.
      olive oil: if roasting under 350 it can work, yet higher it’s not idea. It’s best to make pesto.
      avocado oil: can roast a little higher than olive oil (esp if you get refined)
      grass-fed butter: I blend this in my coffee

    My iron level is low— due to heavy menstrual bleeding— I have fibroids ugh!! What’s a good juicing recipe to build iron and fight fatigue? Thanks

      Hey Nikki. I’ve also struggled with anemia and have found some great recipes to help. You can find both on Amazon to…and add both of these to your smoothies very easily too.

    Hey Jen!!! It looks like I’m the first question on here. Haha! I have always wondered if you have a certain smoothie you drink before/after going for a run. I’m also a runner and trying to incorporate more green smoothies into my day. Thanks so much!

      Hey Dani! Way to get this Q&A party started. If I’m going on a long run (8+ miles) early in the morning, I prefer to eat a granola bar (Bobo’s) or Kind Chia Fruit bar during the first mile of my run. Anything else is too light and squishes around. Yet by the end of a run, I’m always ready for a smoothie. Depending on how much I sweated is how I decide which one to make. If it was a hot run and I sweated like crazy, I try and do a green smoothie with coconut water, banana, pineapple and whatever else I have (like this: https://simplegreensmoothies.com/recipes/green-smoothies/post-workout-green-smoothie). Then I follow it up with some protein a little later (like nuts, plant-based protein shake, hard boiled eggs). If I didn’t sweat too much, I’ll go with a heartier smoothie right away which will have almond milk, oats, berries, banana and whatever else I feel like.
