The BEST green smoothie recipe is right here… I promise!

Are you wondering why anyone would be excited to drink something as green as this? I hear ya— I’ve been right where you are. And so have 1 million+ others who’ve given this smoothie a chance through our free smoothie challenges and recipe books.

Before we get to far, I need to make sure you know this…

When I created this beginner friendly green smoothie recipe…it changed my life in more ways than I ever imagine. It was love at first sip for me, my two kids and over 1 million others who were scared to drink spinach.

I was even able to go on The Doctors with my friend Jadah in 2015 to blend green smoothies live on stage! I was nervous, but knew I had to share this incredible wellness drink with the world!

Jen Hansard on The Doctors making green smoothies

Leafy greens to use in a smoothie

The essence of a green smoothie is fruit and leafy greens. Leafy greens can range from spinach, kale, chard, bok choy, etc. The health benefits of adding leafy greens to your smoothie is that it adds extra phytonutrients and fiber, slowing down the absorption of sugars into your body.

My favorite greens are baby spinach because it’s mild in taste and still allows all the fruit to shine. It’s also easy to find all year round and affordable.

How to make a green smoothie

All you need to make a tasty green smoothie is a blender, fruit and leafy greens. The right ratio of leafy greens to fruit makes it sweet as you reap all the health benefits of a green smoothie. The key is to use recipes that actually taste good and follow my simple tips below.

  1. Blend 1 cup of spinach, or another leafy greens of your choice, in a blender.
  2. Add 1 cup of liquid and blend well (until all leafy chunks are gone).
  3. Toss in fruit, such as frozen mango, pineapple and bananas in the blender.
  4. Next, blend again until smooth and creamy.
  5. Serve smoothie immediately for maximum nourishment.

Are smoothies really good for you?

Smoothies are typically made with fruit and water (or a dairy base), which is high in sugar and can cause inflammation. A green smoothie, on the other hand, is made with fruit, water (or a plant-based liquid) and leafy greens. A green smoothie can taste just as good as a regular smoothie, yet the health results are MUCH better for you.

Heck, drinking this daily smoothie is what helped me get the body and energy to do some incredible things like ran 47 miles of the Grand Canyon, rode motorcycles through Morocco, published two best-selling recipe books and created a backyard garden for my kids.

This daily habit has kept my kids healthy when we didn’t have health insurance, energized us in between school and sports and nourished us so we don’t need to take vitamins.

Why drink a Spinach Smoothie

What we eat can truly transform our bodies and our lives in powerful ways. Especially with this smoothie recipe as I’ve seen in the lives of so many of my friends, family and community online. Blending spinach into a fruit smoothie is a great way to boost your immune system, AND naturally energize you.

This recipe is full of iron, potassium and vitamins galore— and tastes like a tropical treat from all the island fruit. Yet the best part is how simple and quick it is to make! You only need 4 ingredient and all of them can be found at your local grocery store (and don’t cost a fortune either!). As I say all the time— I’m all for making healthy eating affordable so it’s sustainable.

Ingredients you’ll need:

  • fresh spinach
  • frozen pineapple
  • frozen mango
  • fresh banana

Can you taste spinach in the smoothie?

You wouldn’t be the first to look at this recipe and say “no way!” Green! Spinach! Yuck! Yet don’t walk away! This bright green gem will actually delight your taste buds. You’ll even have an extra pep in your step when you realize how great you feel!

Even kids LOVE this green smoothie recipe! I started blending this smoothie in my daughter Clare’s kindergarten class four years ago. Now every year, I visit her school and the kids look forward to me making this again. That’s how delicious this recipe is!

To reiterate, I really encourage you to dive into the world of green smoothies and see just how delicious healthy tastes.

Not sure if your blender can handle the greens? I’ve created The Ultimate Blender Guide and reviewed countless blenders to find the best ones for green smoothies. The key is to get rid of leafy chunks, blend quickly and provide tons of value for the price. Hint: not all of them cost $400+. 🙂 In fact, check out this special deal that Vitamix and I have where you can get my favorite blender for less than $300 (including FREE shipping). Just add this blender to your cart and head to checkout to see the secret pricing!

5 Blending Tips to get Started

  1. Follow the 60/40 formula. When you’re making your first few green smoothies, don’t just throw things in the blender. Chances are, it’ll taste nasty if you wing it right out of the gate. To save you a few smoothie-fails, bust out those cute lil’ measuring cups learn how to make your own green smoothie.
  2. Blend in stages to avoid leafy chunks. Chewing your green smoothie is no fun! To get a “smooth” green smoothie experience, blend up your leafy greens and liquid-base first. Add your remaining fruits and blend again.
  3. Ditch the ice and freeze some fruits. Want your green smoothie to be extra chilly? Freeze your favorite fruits like ripe bananas, grapes, pineapple or berries. You can also freeze your leafy greens in a freezer-safe bag. Just make sure to add your frozen greens straight to the blender.
  4. Use raw natural sweeteners. Add naturally sweet fruits to any smoothie that tastes bitter or a bit too “green.” My favorite naturally sweet fruits are bananas, mango, apples, pears or pitted dates.
  5. Make smoothies ahead for the perfect fast food. Life is crazy busy— especially in the morning. That’s why we think green smoothies are the healthiest fast food for people who are constantly on the go. You can prep your green smoothies and blend the night before and store it in your fridge (up to 2 days).

Description

This beginner-friendly green smoothie recipe is full of iron, potassium and vitamins galore AND tastes like a tropical treat from all the island fruit.

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh spinach
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple
  • 1/2 cup frozen mango
  • 1 banana

Instructions

  1. Tightly pack spinach in a measuring cup.
  2. Add spinach to blender with water. Blend together until all chunks are gone. (Should resemble green water when blended well).
  3. Add pineapple, mango and banana to blender. I like to use frozen pineapple and mangos to chill the smoothie down and save time cutting and prepping. It’s a win-win!
  4. Blend all together until smooth and creamy. Depending on your blender, this could take as little as 30 seconds or as long as 2 minutes.
  5. Pour into a glass and serve immediately.
  6. You can also store the smoothie in the fridge with a lid until ready to drink.

Notes

*Not a fan of bananas? Swap it for 1/4 avocado or add another 1/2 cup mango to the recipe.

Really enjoyed Day 1 green smoothie, Looking forward to trying Day 2.

  2. Linda says:

    Easy to prepare and delicious!

  3. Carolyn Hoffman says:

I’m not sure if my mango was ripe. It was a bit firm cutting into it. I used a vita mix personal blender, with the to go container. It was hard to fit everything in. I didn’t follow the recommendations to blend in stages. I left it running for about two minutes which was not enough. There were still chunks. It didn’t affect the flavor. None of my produce was frozen. The water was chilled. It tasted great even at room temperature. I liked that it’s wasn’t thin like water. I do think it was too sweet for my taste. Since I was stuffing it in and it came out full, I will halve the pineapple and banana if I make it again. The mango wasn’t too sweet but that may be due to it being unripe. I thought about using the recipe using only frozen and coconut cream instead of water and then putting it into the dash personal size ice cream maker for an indulgent treat. I’m doing the ten day challenge and excited about it.

  4. Jeannette Pepin says:

Really fresh tasting! Simple nutritious ingredients that really complimented each other. Delish!

  5. Mary Marquez says:

Loved my 1st green smoothie! I was very surprised! I didn’t think it would taste as good as it did. I couldn’t even taste the spinach! Looking forward to the next 9.

  6. Rashida Fogel says:

I have been drinking smoothies for well over a year. The benefits of the smoothies are amazing. They have aided me in losing weight, given me glorious skin, satiated my hunger pains, etc.. I also drink them for snacks in the middle of the day or whenever I feel like it. The ingredients are all plant-based and would not be harmful.. Jen has been amazing and I love her and her smoothies very much. I can NEVER get enough.

    • SGS Rawkstar Jess says:

We LOVE hearing things like this, Rashida! Thank you so much for sharing your story and keep on rawking!

Haseena, we are true believers that healthy eating can and should taste amazing!

  11. Teresa Schneider says:

10 day smoothie challenge Day 1…. started early! More energy and feel great! Vitamix sent me information and I signed up…. everything very organized and informative! kale yah!
Good taste and I used kale instead of spinach!

  12. Steve Margel says:

it was delicious, I really enjoyed it

  13. Ana says:

    Pure deliciousness

  14. Deanna says:

I gave it a five star although it wasn’t very flavorful. That’s my fault. I only had a little bit of frozen pineapple. I have fresh but I really wasn’t in the mood to cut it up so I just winged it. I’m sure with the proper amount of pineapple it would be great. My daughter tasted it and liked it!

    • SGS Rawkstar Jess says:

Deanna, def make it again when you have enough pineapple. You’re right, with the proper amount it’s really delicious!!

  15. Liz P says:

    Creamy goodness

  16. Birgit says:

My First green smoothie from the simplegreensmothies page and I love it anytime I make it.

  17. Sue says:

Day 1 so far very good, even my husband liked the smoothie. I have a Vitamix, and had to add additional water, as it was a bit to thick. We had them for lunch today.

  18. Amy says:

    Super easy and super yummy!

  19. Tiffany says:

This is a great basic recipe. A nice foundation which feels like you could add more but is also just tasty as it is. Simplistic and flavourful.

  20. Diana H. says:

My husband and I enjoyed this recipe even though it had a minor bitter aftertaste. I blame the frozen mangoes maybe not being as ripe as possible. I put some fresh-squeezed lemon juice in to counter that. I will definitely try this again in the summer when fresh mangoes are more affordable in our area.

  21. Liz says:

I’ve done the challenge before and loved it. But , as a lot of people do, I fell off the wagon. Well, I’m back on and enjoying this smoothie once again.

  22. Sharon Lemons says:

Too much spinach. Went down ok, but had bad aftertaste. Could be because I am not using baby spinach.

    • SGS Rawkstar Jess says:

Baby spinach will def taste more mild, try using that next time and see if it makes a difference for you!

  23. So good. Truthfully it’s the first smoothie recipes I’ve ever followed. Usually I just throw a bunch of stuff in and it doesn’t always taste that great. I will follow recipes from now on.

  24. sharon says:

Started the 10 day challenge January 1 2020
Looking forward to tomorrow pink Flamingo smoothie

Personally I need my smoothies very cold and I added ice should I be substituting some water for the ice?

    • SGS Rawkstar Jess says:

Sharon, we try to avoid ice as it is harder on your blender blades than frozen fruit. If you love a super cold smoothie, try using all frozen fruits and that should result in a cold, creamy treat!

  25. Josie Martiniello says:

Family liked the smoothie – especially my husband. Great start with beginner’s luck 🙂

  26. Tiffany Richardson says:

This is awesome and is perfect for winters day when you wish you on a hot beach.

  27. Migdalia Roser says:

Easy to make….. taste really good! Thanks for sharing

  28. Sarah says:

My son and I drank this one together, and it is delicious! We love it! I think doing this challenge with him is going to be so fun! He’s only 8, and this is a great way to encourage healthy eating habits while enjoying the benefits these green smoothies offer. Awesome recipe – thank you!

  29. Lisa says:

This tastes great and was quick and easy to make!

  30. Michelle says:

Day one of the smoothie challenge is a success. Even my “no greens” husband is getting in on the action. Swapped the spinach with kale since I grow my own kale in the garden. Just as delicious!!

  31. Jennifer A says:

My teenage daughter took one sip and said, “Mmmm…that one’s gooooood!” Pretty much sums it up!

  32. Susan says:

    Forgot the stars!

  33. Susan says:

The Beginner Smoothie was very tasty. I have prepared all ten smoothies in bags and frozen them. I was skeptical that the smoothie would come out of the freezer and blend well, but it was perfect! I had it for lunch, (I like my oatmeal and blueberries for breakfast), followed by a cup of hot coffee as it did make me shiver being January 1. Tomorrow I will blend #2 and bring it to work. Thank you…

  34. Ronnie Calder says:

tasted very fresh and tropical…was nice to go back to the original smoothie from when i first started drinking them.

  35. Mary Anderson says:

    Tastes great!

  36. Jennifer says:

A fantastic & terrific tasty smoothie to start with.

  37. Jennifer Hart-Machin says:

This is one of my favorite smoothies! Pineapple is always a win for me and this one is sweet but not too sweet and really refreshing!

  38. Julia says:

This is a good one, added a bit of kale with the spinach, and replaced the banana with a pear ( I don’t eat bananas) Good start to the year.

  39. Joy S says:

Really great smoothie! My husband and I are both doing the challenge.
I am currently out of town and purchased a blender……I find it doesn’t make the smoothie very smooth, and I found I had to eat some of it with a spoon! Lol
I can’t wait to get home and use my Vitamix as I know the blending results will be much better and for my husband who never eats greens much more palatable!!
    Will persevere!!

  40. Diane says:

Much too sweet for me! But probably great for those with a sweet tooth/kids/picky eaters.

    • SGS Rawkstar Jess says:

Diane, if a smoothie is too sweet for your taste buds, try flipping the greens to fruit ratio. For example, with this recipe you would use 2 cups of spinach, 1/4 cup pineapple, 1/4 cup mango, and half a banana. You could even add a pinch of sea salt if you are like my sister and prefer salty over sweet.

  41. Margaret Eacker says:

Easy to make and tasted good. I substituted some frozen avocado for half of the banana, as I don’t really care for them.

  42. Christine says:

loving this smoothie! i make it quite frequently, but haven’t recently so it was great to return to an old favourite.

  43. JT says:

Delicious and sweet. Beautiful green color.

  46. EricaRuth says:

This is super yummy! And still sweet enough to feel like a treat…

  47. Audrey says:

I love all the tropical flavors in the smoothie. I’ve been making smoothies for years and I learned something new. To blend the greens in liquid first. It makes such a difference in the smoothie. Thanks!

  48. Holly P. says:

Even my super picky eater loved this recipe!!! He said he wants this for breakfast every day now instead of Eggo waffles 🙂 WIN!!!!

Hubby says “it’s green” and may need some protein added if he is going to relate a meal with it. My reply was “its suppose to be green; hence the name”…lol.

  51. Efef Salem Wood says:

Great taste and very easy prep. Thank you!

  52. Mary says:

This smoothie is sooo delicious! I think I may be drinking this daily. :-). It’s my first day of the 10-day challenge!! Day one and done! My husband and son are doing the challenge with me! Hoping for a great start to the new year, new decade!

  53. Christine Falchetta says:

Recipe was delicious. Family loved it. I think if the fruit was frozen it would have been even better. I will try that next time.
