All you need to make a tasty green smoothie is a blender, fruit and leafy greens. The right ratio of spinach to fruit makes it sweet, as well as helps you reap all the health benefits of a green smoothie. The key is to use recipes that actually taste good and follow my simple tips below.

Ingredients you’ll need:

  • fresh spinach
  • frozen pineapple
  • frozen mango
  • fresh banana
  1. Blend 1 cup of spinach (or another leafy greens of your choice) in a blender. Adding leafy greens to your smoothie boosts the phytonutrients and fiber, which then slows down the absorption of sugars into your body.
  2. Next, add 1 cup of liquid and blend well (until all leafy chunks are gone).
  3. Toss in fruit, such as frozen mango, pineapple and bananas in the blender.
  4. Next, blend again until smooth and creamy.
  5. Serve smoothie immediately for maximum nourishment.

  • 1 cup fresh spinach
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup pineapple, frozen
  • 1/2 cup mango, frozen
  • 1 banana
  • 1 Protein Smoothie Boost, optional


  • Measure: Tightly pack spinach in a measuring cup.
  • Add: Put spinach to blender with water. Blend together until all chunks are gone. (Should resemble green water when blended well).
  • Toss: Pineapple, mango and banana to blender. I like to use frozen pineapple and mangos to chill the smoothie down and save time cutting and prepping. It’s a win-win!
  • Blend: It all together until smooth and creamy. Depending on your blender, this could take as little as 30 seconds or as long as 2 minutes.
  • Pour: Into a glass and serve immediately.
  • Store: In the fridge with a lid until ready to drink.



  • Not a fan of bananas? Swap it for 1/4 avocado, additional 1/2 cup mango or 1/2 cup peaches.
  • You can use 1 cup pineapple if you're out of mango.
  • Frozen fruit is recommended because it's easy and chills the smoothie.

    Ok so I made the beginner’s luck smoothie and halved the recipe except I used milk because I wanted more protein for breakfast. However the smoothie came out really frothy and made 32oz because of all the froth. Do you think this is because of the milk or because of my ninja blender frothing it up too much?     Thank you Jadah and Jen for replying to my earlier post about not receiving the shopping list…..

    ..I did just find the shopping list in my spam file…..I had already gone shopping earlier today and find that I already have or had gotten everything your list had on it. except pears and raspberries this before seeing your list……….I also made my first green smoothie yesterday….spinach, carrot, mango, blueberries, 1/’2 scoop rice protein powder and almond milk drank 1/2 yesterday, finished it this morning.

    Look forward to officially starting the challenge on Jan. 1st.

    I did my first green smoothie yesterday. My Nutribullet could not handle a full recipe so I had quite the production my first time. It turned out great though – I just had a mess to clean up πŸ™‚ I have now separated the recipe and bagged up the ingredients and put them in the freezer for the rest of this week. I am going to use this as my meal replacement for breakfast and just whip it up for my ride into work. I did the Almond Joy today and it is so tasty. I am glad I came across this site.

Also I am one person, should I be making enough for two smoothies or cutting your recipes in half. They seem very high in calories so to drink two a day ia a lot.

      It means we measure it in a measuring cup, pack the spinach into it, and then dump it unto our blender pitcher. Hope this helps!

      You can definitely use kale instead of spinach! Pretty much any leafy green can be substituted for another. The only thing about kale is that you may want to blend it with the liquid first for a bit before adding fruits. It is a bit tougher to blend than spinach πŸ™‚

    Hello! I am so excited to have stumbled across this page. I just had bariatric surgery, so I was searching for a Smoothie “home” to call my own. I got my Blendtec and I am ready to tackle a healthier 2014. Question – since I do have the Blendtec, can I use ice? Would I substitute any of the water? Or just add ice to the recipe above? Also – what about protein powders? I was thinking of the Isopure (no flavor) and just add a scoop to your recipes. Is that ok? Thank you so much for this AWESOME website <3

      Not too sure about Isopureβ€”don’t have any experience with it. If you like it and trust it then go for it πŸ™‚ We don’t mind adding a bit of protein here and there. You can add ice if you’d like, too. We prefer to freeze some of our fruits to keep them from going bad, and just adding those for a chill. If you use ice, then you may want to reduce the amount of liquid you use in the recipe. Hope this helps!

    Me and my wife are on green smoothies already, we use what is available. Frozen vegitables is a good source and provide the coldness. I also love to plant some vegitables but only the ones that grow like weeds.

    If you are using a vita mix you can let it blend for 5 mins on high speed to make a warm soup blend. If you don’t have you could warm it slightly but not past about 112 degrees. Good luck. Stay with it and you will be rewarded

    Ok, so its cold, I’m in Victoria, BC, can you ladies also come up with a warm green smoothie? Most of my fruits and ingredients are cold from the fridge, but at this time of year I just can’t fathom a cold drink of any kind. Well, except beer, but that becomes room temp. πŸ˜‰
    Love the paper straws! I’m too nervous to get a glass straw for fear of dropping it in the sink. My husband insists on the fat straws from McD’s, and well they are perfect for smoothies!

      We love the stainless steel straws too! Just make sure to get a straw cleaner so you get all the green gunk out. πŸ™‚

      As far as warm, try making a green smoothie with all room temperature fruits that you normally store on the counter. I also like to use a little knitted sleeve on my mason jars, so the glass is not cold on my hands during the winter.

    Hi, I wondered if you can freeze the fresh spinach in bags that you but from a supermarket? I don’t have anywhere near by that sells spinach and when I do buy it I end up wasting loads as it goes off x

    • Absolutely, Karen! You can keep all your greens in a zip bag and toss right into your blenders. You can also do it with fruits too that are about to spoil. πŸ™‚

Each time, I fall into a routine so your challenge will keep me excited πŸ™‚ I do not use a cup but rather a handful portion, like for my green leaves or frozen stuff I simply use my hand or at leat a tbsp for chia seeds. Is you cup portion kind of similar of a handful portion?

    • Hi Virginie! Not sure how many handfuls we use, probably close to 2 huge handfuls to get 2 cups of greens. And yes, at least a tablespoon of chia seeds or two is great. πŸ™‚

    • Hi Vanessa! The challenge is to just drink one green smoothie a day πŸ™‚ You can have it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or as a snack! The rest of the day you can eat normal meals.

    • Hi Adrienne! Why don’t you try just a normal recipe for a couple days and see how you feel during and after your workout? Leafy greens are PACKED with protein! However, if you notice that you are feeling like you’re missing some nutrients during or after your workouts, then you can try adding some protein (i.e. almonds, almond milk, hemp protein powder, nut/seed butters). Hope this helps!

    • We did try it and weren’t fond of the taste, but thought that it had some pretty good nutrients. Try it out and let us know what you think! We were hesitant to recommend it to people if they weren’t going to enjoy the taste.

      You would be surprised how much protein is in leafy greens! It is one of their top nutrient categories. They can be meal replacements or snacks.

      I sooo agree with you. But this smoothie was still pretty good. I have a little bullet so I was tasting as I added each ingredient one at a time, it was fabulous until the banana. Next time I’ll try adding more mango (I didn’t read far enough down to see that suggestion) I also added a couple of basil leaves. Yummy

    Your tip about blending the water and spinach first, has made all of the difference for me. This is only the second green smoothie I have tried and way better experience than my first. It is a nice bright cheery green colour that is much more appealing than the previous muddy green one I tried. I have a 20+ year old Osterizer blender that actually did a pretty good job of getting rid of all of the chunky spinach bits when I followed your tips! Thank you!       Hey Sarahβ€” I wouldn’t recommend it… we have had people try that and it doesn’t usually end up well. The frozen boxes of spinach usually have additives (including salt) and seem to get a bit strange. I would stick with fresh leafy greensβ€”Β and you can freeze them yourself and know exactly what’s in them.

      The cup is an actual unit of measurment. You can easily google the conversions, but, a cup is equal to 128 g or 4.5 oz

      We personally don’t count calories, so we don’t include them in our recipes at this time. You’ll find that when you consume more nourishing whole fruits and veggies, you will not only feel full longer, but you’ll also have lessened cravings for high-calorie, nutritionally empty foods. So in the end it balances out. But we know many people would like to have calorie info. Three great resources for tracking calories are Self Nutrition Data, and the phone apps: My Fitness Pal and Lose It.

    I peel then wrap bananas in wax paper sheets then store them in the freezer in a gallon zip lock bag. When I need one I just take one out at add it to my blender with the rest of the ingredients. It helps to make my smoothie colder.

      I know this isn’t my comment, but I do the same, except I freeze the bananas flat on parchment paper first then stick them in a Ziploc bag. They freeze individually so easier to handle and I think they freeze better that way too… easier to pull apart.

    Thanks for the recipe, I am eagerly awaiting delivery of my VitaMix! In the meantime, can you help me with this info? I read somewhere online that you should add nuts to green leafy foods, salads, and green smoothies, as they help your body assimilate the good stuff in the greens; and I just read today in a well-respected book that you should Never put nuts in smoothies (but doesn’t say why not)…which is it?

      We love adding nuts to our green smoothies πŸ™‚ We don’t do it all the time, just because we like having variety. But we especially love soaking almonds overnight, and then blending them in our smoothie!

    Hi I’m Brianna im New to this site I’ve heard about the green smoothie challenge and im super excited to start. I’m 18 and 115 pounds so I’m not looking to lose weight at all. I have a really bad eating habit that I don’t even eat fruit or veggies. I’m looking to detox or fast on just this smoothie so can I just drink the smoothie or do I eat other meals with the smoothie? I hope this is not a dumb question.

      This is not a dumb question at all, and we are so glad that you are caring about your health at the age of 18!! We both wish we cared when we were that age….

      The goal of doing a 30 day challenge is to drink one green smoothie a day–either for breakfast/lunch/dinner, or as a snack. We highly recommend eating normal/healthy the rest of the day, and not JUST drinking green smoothies. Some people do have more than one green smoothie a day, but we recommend just starting with one 16 ounce serving of green goodness πŸ™‚ Let us know if you have any more questions!

    2. I saw somewhere that you don’t suppose to mix a banana with pineapple because banana is sweet fruit and pineapple is an acid fruit, any idea about it?

    Try adding a little lemon, I use the bottled variety, unsweetened almond milk, and a frozen banana. I use mostly frozen fruit and greens. If it’s thicker it will stay mixed longer.

    I’m a little confused. My first month I lost 10 lbs easy as pie. My next month I have continued to feel better but no weight loss. I tried being heavier on the spinach and lighter on the fruits to lower the sugar content but then I had mad sugar cravings. I do have a bagel in the morning when I’m running late and wonder if the bread has anything to do with it. It’s a carb like a fruit though, so that might be wrong. Am I supposed to have only shakes until dinner for weight loss?
    I use all frozen fruits and veggies to save time and have less waste from over-ripened fruit. My smoothies are very thick, like a Frosty. Could I be having too much therefore too many calories?

    • Weight loss is different for everyone πŸ™‚ Green smoothies aren’t miracle weight loss pills, but they are healthy and whole foods that gives your body the nutrients that it craves. What is your physical activity like? You may want to incorporate some or more, and be substituting for at least one meal per day. Hope this helps!

    • If where you are traveling to doesn’t have a blender, then take your own, buy produce at a local store/market, and keep on blending!

    So I probably should have thought this through but I have frozen some bananas…and they are now rock solid…with their peels on. So should I thaw them out to use or is there any chance they’re ok to use with peel on? I know some fruits are but I’m not sure that banana peel seems to be one of them but thought I’d ask the question πŸ™‚

    • We wouldn’t recommend using the peel… We have never frozen them with the peel on, so not sure the best technique. Thawing then peeling seems to be logical πŸ™‚

      Kat: You can still use them. Rinse them under water to remove the peel and the stringy fiber underneath. From there, you can then cut the banana/s into pieces, or if you’re lazy like me, break them apart by hand. Just be mindful when rinsing under water to remove the peel, that you only go just enough to make the peel easy to remove and no more. I saw this tip on another blog, and it works quite well!

      Kat, I always peel my bananas first then wrap them in a sheet of wax paper and freeze them in a gallon zip lock bag. When I need one I just take out however many I need and blend it frozen. This makes your smoothie colder without having to add ice.

      I freeze bananas with the skin on and while I’m preparing the rest of my smoothie chuck one is some hot water in the sink. Only takes a minute or so for the skin to defrost and peel of easily but the banana stays cold and frozen to be thrown into the smoothie πŸ™‚

    I am new to clean eating and am loving finding new smoothie recipes to try out, I have always loved most fruits but not so many veggies I’m hoping to add more veggies to my Smoothies but can any of these ingredients be frozen so that I can buy more in one trip? I find myself eating better if it is already in the kitchen than if I have to think ahead and remember to go to the store

      I have the same problem. I wait until I’m too hungry then grab whatever is convenient. What has worked for me is making huge batches, (I have all 3 blenders going like an assembly line) then I pour them into Ball brand pint and a half freezer safe jars with plastic lids. (Walmart) I leave a little less than 1/4 inch from the top for expansion, then put the plastic cover on loosely to let air out then freeze. I tighten it down once it’s frozen to keep it fresh. At night it put whatever I think I’ll drink the next day into the refrigerator. By morning I have a slushy smoothie, and by lunch it’s a very cold regular smoothie. Once I’m down to my last couple jars the assembly line comes out again. This works with just one blender too, just takes a little longer.

    Last week I discovered I have Rosacea and after a lot of research I discovered that it is due to poor eating and an un-balanced body ph and that can also cause a lot more health issues. I’ve also been really tired lately and my hormones have been crazy. I spoke with a friend who just finished the Dr. Oz 3 day detox so I researched that and decided that today, July 1 would be the first day of a challenge to become more healthy.     I’ve been having 2 or more a day. I hope that’s okay. I would think it would be. I’m down 10lbs in my first month. This is a lifestyle change for me. After learning how the animals we eat are treated, I can’t bear the thought of ever eating meat again. Yes, I have to lose another 40 lbs., but my direction in life has changed to getting my body healthy, and to advocate for those who cannot speak, but can absolutely feel emotion. I now know unequivocally, that I can get all the nutrition -and more- that my body needs without giving one more cent to the meat industry.

    My daily greenie includes: 2C kale, 2 celery, parsley, one green apple, 1/2 cuke, and either 1/2 c of pineapple, mango, or banana.

      The challenge is all about drinking ONE green smoothie per day for 30 days. If you do that, then you can consider yourself a rawkstar πŸ™‚ You can replace your breakfast with a smoothie, add one for a snack, or even replace a different meal. It is totally up to you when you would like to drink your smoothie!
