The final product you can store in your fridge for a DIY home remedy for cough and cold

What is the best medicine for a cold and cough?

I used to run to the drugstore and load up on medicine and cough drops… yet I never felt better using them. They taste gross and I wake up feeling even worse. That’s when I decided there had to be a better way—something that was natural and made to heal us.

Seven years ago, I went on my own wellness warrior journey and discovered the best way to heal from a cold or cough.

Fresh ginger, lemon and raw honey to be used in a an all natural cold and flu remedy

I made this concoction of fresh lemon, ginger, and raw local honey to prepare for when the germs start spreading. Now, I keep it in the fridge and the first sign of a cold or flu, I just scoop out a few tablespoons, add hot water and enjoy this delicious and soothing tea.

This is hands down the best way I’ve ever found to treat a cold, cough or flu naturally. No joke. It tastes amazing, makes me feel great instantly and I quickly recover. Why is that?

How can I stop coughing at night naturally?

This home remedy for cough and cold contains the best things for you to fight a cold or flu naturally:

Lemon: High in vitamin C (especially the pith, aka the white part we all avoid… yet not today!) Vitamin C helps boost your immune system and neutralize the free radicals in your body. This reduces the inflammation and swelling in your body when fighting off a common cold. Lemon also has natural acidity that helps break down your mucous and alleviate congestion.

Ginger: Helps you sweat out the toxins in your body, which is helpful when you have a cold or flu. Ginger is also helpful for settling upset stomachs, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and cold sweats.

Honey: is a natural cough suppressant (Which explains why the most effective cough drops use honey). It also improves the body’s ability to fight infection and decreases the risk of fevers. The natural sweetness of honey also balances the tartness of the lemon and the ginger’s spice, giving honey, lemon and ginger tea its soothing flavor.

You can make this immunity boosting, body soothing concoction ahead of time and store in the fridge. I usually keep my mixture for about two months or until we use it all up.

  • 2 lemons (thoroughly cleaned)
  • 2 piece fresh ginger (about the size of your pointer and middle finger)
  • Raw honey
  • 12 oz mason jar

  1. Slice lemons and ginger.
  2. Place the lemon and ginger slices in the mason jar, alternating layers of each.
  3. Slowly, pour honey over the lemon and ginger. Allow the honey to sink down and around the lemon and ginger slices. Fill jar to the top with honey and seal tightly.
  4. Store in the refrigerator. Over time, the mixture will start to turn into a loose jelly.
  5. When you are in need of some soothing tea, scoop 2-3 tablespoons into a mug full of hot water—be sure to scoop whole pieces of ginger and lemon. Allow to steep for 3-4 minutes and sip away.

  1. Darshana says:

Can the honey be substituted? I am wondering if say, maple syrup counts?

    • SGS Rawkstar Jess says:

Darshana, I think using maple syrup, as long as it’s pure maple syrup, would be fine. You won’t get the exact benefits honey provides but maple syrup has its own great benefits.

  2. Ralph says:

I’ve tried this already, 3 times a day and in less than 1 week. It removes my 4month old could. Very effective.

    • SGS Rawkstar Jess says:

Ralph, this is such a great remedy, isn’t it?! I make it to keep on hand every winter and it works like a charm. So glad to hear it helped you get rid of a cold you had for so long!

  3. Erin Nelson says:

Taste great and does an even better job of zapping the symptoms of my cold and or potential flu right away! Jen keep conjuring;)

    • SGS Rawkstar Jess says:

Erin, so true on all counts! I keep a jar of this in the fridge all winter long and it’s a lifesaver some days!

  4. Naomi says:

To reduce the tickle in your throat, use a thick, viscous gargle made with honey or honey and apple cider vinegar.

  5. Dee Glick says:

Can this be used right away?

  6. Nykenji Jarrett says:

Does this drink help get rid of a cold ?

  7. Grace says:

hello, Thanks for the recipe. How long can you store this home remedy in the refrigerator?

    • SGS Rawkstar Carissa says:

      Hey Grace,

We have kept this in the fridge for up to a month. During cold season it doesn’t last long but for the off season I would suggest just checking it and making sure the coloring stays the same because it does last a really long time.

      Hope that helps!

  8. Maggie says:

    Can you also
Take this like a syrup? Instead of steeping in water, just give a teaspoon to a child?

    • SGS Rawkstar Carissa says:

      Hey Maggie,

Our suggest was to take a teaspoon and add it to hot water and make into a tea.

Although if you did want to take a teaspoon of it directly I don’t see any issues with that since it’s just honey, lemon, and ginger.

      Hope that helps!

  9. Andrea Johnson says:

I love this, but my mixture has never congealed or gotten thick. I’m using a variety of raw honeys. From purchased at the source to supermarket raws. The lemon seems to thin it out. Suggestions???

    • SGS Rawkstar Carissa says:

      Hey Andrea,
Hhmm it doesn’t have to thicken up and if you have all the ingredients that should be good. Maybe try to add in less lemon and see if hat makes a difference.

      Hope that helps!

  10. Bridget Pomery says:

i see with skin on ginger would be most effective only being the best part its where most vitimins are in the fruit of the plants or in the leaves

    • SGS Rawkstar Carissa says:

      Hey Bridget,

You can totally leave the skin on your ginger if you prefer it that way. We are always a fan of not wasting anything!

  11. Susan says:

Do you peel the ginger first or leave the skin on? This looks amazing and can’t wait try 🙂

  12. Sophie says:

The best thing in the world!!!! I drink this like a normal person would juice everyday. My favourite drink!

    • SGS Rawkstar Carissa says:

      Hey Sophie,

That is so awesome! Thank you for sharing how much you love this recipe!

  13. Krishna preethi says:

    This will be helpful

  14. Amy says:

Due to diet restrictions, I can’t have ginger. Do you have any recommendations for a substitute? (Cinnamon, basil, and rosemary are also out.)

    • SGS Rawkstar Carissa says:

      Hey Amy,

There really isn’t a substitute for ginger that would give the same benefits. However you can always add in some nutmeg or more cinnamon to this recipe.

      Hope that helps!

  15. Kathleen Murphy says:

I will definitely make this. Glad I found this recipe. I had a bad cold a few weeks ago. Like Ada I’ve been adding a teaspoon of ground ginger along wirh fresh lime juice to my regular tea. It worked fantastically.

    • SGS Rawkstar Carissa says:

      Hey Kathleen,

So happy you found this recipe too! Those are two amazing ingredients to add to this recipe. Enjoy!!
