Best home remedy for cough and cold

BEST home remedy for cough and cold- Honey, Ginger, and Lemon Natural Remedy

As the weather gets windier and colder, flu and cold season kicks into gear. I get a little obsessive (wipe down the shopping cart like crazy, wash my hands numerous times a day and gulp down my immune boosting green smoothies). Yet no matter what I do, I’m bound to get one cold a year. That’s why I’ve come to rely on this awesome home remedy for cough and cold.

Lemon Ginger and Honey home remedy for cough and cold

I recently made this concoction of fresh lemon, ginger, and raw local honey to prepare for when the germs start spreading. I keep it in the fridge and the first sign of a cold or flu, I just scoop out a few tablespoons, add hot water and enjoy this delicious and soothing tea.

Lemon Ginger and Honey home remedy for cough and cold

Why my home remedy for cough and cold works:

This recipe contains the best things for you to fight a cold or flu naturally:

Lemon: High in vitamin C, which keeps the immune system strong and neutralizes the free radicals in your body. This reduced the inflammation and swelling.

Ginger: Helps you sweat out the toxins in your body, which is helpful when you have a cold or flu. Ginger is also helpful for settling upset stomachs, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and cold sweats.

Honey: Soothes a sore throat, making it an effective and natural cough suppressant. This improves the body’s ability to fight infection and decreases the risk of fevers. The natural sweetness of honey also balances the tartness of the lemon and the ginger’s spice, giving honey, lemon and ginger tea its soothing flavor.

The best home remedy for cough and cold

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Category: Drinks

Description

You can make this immunity boosting, body soothing concoction ahead of time and store in the fridge. I usually keep my mixture for about two months or until we use it all up.

Scale

Ingredients

  • 2 lemons (thoroughly cleaned)
  • 2 piece fresh ginger (about the size of your pointer and middle finger)
  • Raw honey
  • 12 oz mason jar

Instructions

  1. Slice lemons and ginger.
  2. Place the lemon and ginger slices in the mason jar, alternating layers of each.
  3. Slowly, pour honey over the lemon and ginger. Allow the honey to sink down and around the lemon and ginger slices. Fill jar to the top with honey and seal tightly.
  4. Store in the refrigerator. Over time, the mixture will start to turn into a loose jelly.
  5. When you are in need of some soothing tea, scoop 2-3 tablespoons into a mug full of hot water—be sure to scoop whole pieces of ginger and lemon. Allow to steep for 3-4 minutes and sip away.

    Hey Natalie,

It can last a few months in the fridge. We usually use it up by then but as long as it looks and smells good you should be fine keeping it.

    Hey Judy,
    .
Great question! You fill up the jar with as much honey as you want. We normally fill the jar all the way up.

    Hope that helps!

I grew up on foods such as this for healing purposes. Back in Kenya, we hardly ever went to the doctors.I try ti get my husband (he is Caucasian Canadian) to use homemade remedies but he just won’t. Home made remedies also taste good and you don’t get any chemicals into your body.

    March 5th, 2019 at 11:21 am

    Hey Rashida,

We truly believe that natural is the best for your body but sometimes it’s hard to get others interested. We just have to keep trying 🙂

I will definitely make this. Glad I found this recipe. I had a bad cold a few weeks ago. Like Ada I’ve been adding a teaspoon of ground ginger along wirh fresh lime juice to my regular tea. It worked fantastically.

    Hey Kathleen,

So happy you found this recipe too! Those are two amazing ingredients to add to this recipe. Enjoy!!

Due to diet restrictions, I can’t have ginger. Do you have any recommendations for a substitute? (Cinnamon, basil, and rosemary are also out.)

  24. SGS Rawkstar Carissa

    March 18th, 2019 at 3:17 pm

    Hey Amy,

There really isn’t a substitute for ginger that would give the same benefits. However you can always add in some nutmeg or more cinnamon to this recipe.

    Hope that helps!

Do you peel the ginger first or leave the skin on? This looks amazing and can’t wait try 🙂

  30. Susan

Disregard. If I zoom in, it looks like the skin is on 🙂

i see with skin on ginger would be most effective only being the best part its where most vitimins are in the fruit of the plants or in the leaves

  33. SGS Rawkstar Carissa

    April 24th, 2019 at 3:27 pm

    Hey Bridget,

You can totally leave the skin on your ginger if you prefer it that way. We are always a fan of not wasting anything!

  34. Andrea Johnson

    April 28th, 2019 at 3:51 pm

I love this, but my mixture has never congealed or gotten thick. I’m using a variety of raw honeys. From purchased at the source to supermarket raws. The lemon seems to thin it out. Suggestions???

  35. SGS Rawkstar Carissa

    April 29th, 2019 at 2:52 pm

    Hey Andrea,
Hhmm it doesn’t have to thicken up and if you have all the ingredients that should be good. Maybe try to add in less lemon and see if hat makes a difference.

    Hope that helps!

  36. Maggie

    May 9th, 2019 at 9:51 am

    Can you also
Take this like a syrup? Instead of steeping in water, just give a teaspoon to a child?

  37. SGS Rawkstar Carissa

    May 9th, 2019 at 3:43 pm

    Hey Maggie,

Our suggest was to take a teaspoon and add it to hot water and make into a tea.

Although if you did want to take a teaspoon of it directly I don’t see any issues with that since it’s just honey, lemon, and ginger.

    Hope that helps!

  38. Grace

    September 10th, 2019 at 9:33 am

hello, Thanks for the recipe. How long can you store this home remedy in the refrigerator?

  39. SGS Rawkstar Carissa

    September 10th, 2019 at 1:08 pm

    Hey Grace,

We have kept this in the fridge for up to a month. During cold season it doesn’t last long but for the off season I would suggest just checking it and making sure the coloring stays the same because it does last a really long time.

    Hope that helps!
