Energizing Pomegranate Smoothie

These antioxidant gems make an energizing pomegranate smoothie in just minutes. When autumn weather hits, I get excited about the new season of produce hitting the grocery store… especially the pomegranates.

Top Pomegranate Health Benefits

Ruby red pomegranates are a great addition to your green smoothie. In addition to being high in antioxidants, they are also a good source of potassium, folate, vitamins C and K, and fiber, if the full seed is eaten. Be sure to use fresh pomegranates (or juice) because pasteurization destroys the vitamin C.

The antioxidants in pomegranates help reduce inflammation, may have anti-aging effects, and some scientists think that they may even help with preventing cancer.

One of the biggest benefits of eating pomegranates is increased heart health. Studies have shown that the nutrients, particularly the polyphenols (including anthrocyanins) in pomegranates can help decrease inflammation and thickening of artery walls, reduce the buildup of cholesterol and plaque, and prevent platelets from clumping together. So add those sweet seeds to your smoothie and say cheers to a healthier heart! (Source)

What fruit goes with pomegranate?

Combining iron-rich spinach and vitamin C-rich oranges and pomegranates helps you absorb the iron better than by itself. Bananas are full of potassium and fiber, and makes this smoothie nice and creamy. These are the key ingredients to make a tasty (and healthy!) pomegranate smoothie:

  • pomegranate seeds
  • banana
  • mango
  • spinach
  • oranges

Not only will this smoothie taste amazing, but it’s loaded with nutrients (and void of dairy, one of the most common food sensitivities out there!)

Are pomegranate seeds good in a smoothie?

I know how intimidating this may seem, but the arils (or seeds) are where it’s at! They are high in fiber, which helps slow down how quickly the pomegranate sugar is absorbed into your blood stream. I love deseeding a fresh pomegranate and using the whole seeds, or arils, instead of using juice for the added nutrition and fiber.

How to blend pomegranate seeds in a smoothie

Having a high powered blender will make all the difference when blending these heart seeds. I suggest adding them

This looks like it fixes the Cranberry Citrus Blast recipe (which says you can substitute pom for the cran). That recipe left my mason jars looking a little empty. I’ll try this one next time.

    Hi Wolfer,

Yes! Cranberries or cherries are both great substitutes for pomegranates! Reach back out + let us know what you think of this recipe!

How much of this smoothie can you drink in a day and are these smoothies good for replacing a ‘normal’ lunch or breakfast to loose weight?

    Hi Iduna,

Thanks for reaching out! We suggest adding 1-2 green smoothies to your day either as a meal replacement or in addition to your regular diet. My question is just about the pomegranate seeds. I know many people eat the whole seed…my question is: Are the pomegranate seeds hard on the teeth? I’ve just sucked the juice out of the seeds and spit them out previously. Of course it takes about an hour to “eat” a pom that way and it hardly makes it worth the trouble. BUT…if I can actually eat the whole seed (without breaking a tooth!), I may try it again…maybe even in a green smoothie!

    Hey Polly,

Thanks for your comment! The pomegranate seeds should not be hard on your teeth and if they are ripe they should be very easy to chew. Let us know how it is if you give it another try! 🙂
