Green Tart Smoothie

Who’s ready to try this green smoothie recipe from our beloved friend Vani, the Food Babe?!

Vani’s a green smoothie rawkstar, just like us. But that’s not all— this amazing woman is transforming the food industry from the inside out— Subway, Kellogs, Starbucks, Chick Fil A, and many more have invested in better ingredients in their foods thanks to Vani). We all get to benefit from her food activist work.



Green Tart Smoothie

This is the green smoothie recipe that Vani recommends to everyone that’s a part of the Food Babe community. She packs in extra greens with kale and celery, and the pineapple + grapefruit combo balance each other perfectly.



  • 1 cup fresh kale
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 large stalks of celery (chopped)
  • 1/4 cucumber (chopped)
  • grapefruit
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple


  1. Blend kale and water until smooth.
  2. Add remaining ingredients, and blend until smooth. Enjoy!


*Use frozen fruit to make smoothie cold.

    I use half the amount of cucumber (since I’m not a big fan), and it still works out great.

    I appreciate the extra greens in this recipe and love grapefruit— so this is a winner in my book! Do you know if I need to peel the cucumber first?

      If it’s not organic, I would recommend peeling it. But if you can get your hands on organic cucumber, you might want to just wash it well and use it, peel and all!

    Hi, my husband and I had this smoothie for breakfast today. I added some lime juice which I hope is ok. This filled me up until lunch which us very unusual for me. Loving this website x

    I stubbled on your website and was really excited to get started trying your recipes. It looks like you put a lot of effort into what you do, and provide tons of useful tips to make eating healthier easy.

    This post made me really sad though. Vani the food babe is one of the worst enemies of science. She is not a scientist, but acts as a public authority on chemistry and nutrition, which she has no credentials in. She has lied and bullshitted to masses of people that eat up her shit. When people like Vani and one of her promoters, Dr. Oz are what people see, pay attention to and take advice from, it makes the life of scientists and doctors much more difficult. You know, the people who spend their lives devoted to testing hypotheses and finding actual truths.

    I’d be happy to elaborate with her claims and plenty of citations that refute them, but for the sake of simplicity, I’ll stop here.

    due to allergies I can not have pineapple or coconut what do you sub for these two ingredients please

      Hi Audrey,

      Allergic to pineapple + coconut, we got you covered! Orange, grapefruit, + mango are all great substitutes for pineapple, while water, diluted fresh juice or another one of your favorite liquid bases make a great replacement for coconut water in a lot of our recipes.

    Thank you for the recipe! It was perfect for the morning after having not eaten the healthiest the day before. I did make some changes, using a whole grapefruit and subbing pineapple for mango.

      Adding a whole grapefruit ensures your body is receiving tons of carotenoids, limonoids, + pectin fiber, giving your body a diverse amount of health benefits (perfect for after a not-so-healthy day), not to mention a delicious, tangy flavor! Rawk on!

    The one I am drinking is giving me a lot of Stomach pain and I don’t know
    Why as before I was okay. So I am planning to change ingredients with this one.

      Hi Andrea,

      With kale, cucumber, + celery this recipe has a lot of fiber! Stomach pain can be a common symptom if your body is not used to drinking or eating lots of fiber. Green smoothies are high in fiber which is great for digestion, but for some the high fiber can shock your body. Make sure you drink lots of water to help flush things out. And if you’re new to green smoothies one serving a day is enough, which is 2 cups (16 ounces).
