Orange Smoothie with Spinach and Lemon

Health Benefits of a Spinach Orange Smoothie

One of the top reasons to drink smoothies is to quickly consume nutrients. smoothie has got a lot of nutrients in it including:

  • Iron and vitamin A from the spinach. Need more iron? Check out this post where I share my journey with anemia.
  • Electrolytes from the coconut water: Can also use electrolyte smoothie cubes.
  • Vitamin C and fiber from the lemon and orange: Add more fiber by embracing a plant-based diet.
  • Potassium and even more fiber from the banana: Banana also adds creaminess to this orange smoothie

To Peel or Not To Peel Citrus

Peeling citrus fruit is the most common way of consuming them. Both the rind and pith (the white part between the fruit and the rind) are super bitter so it can be tempting to eliminate them ASAP. But hold up! You might actually wanna blend some of it into our orange smoothie.

Health benefits of orange peel

The rind of citrus fruits contain powerful antioxidant, bioflavonoids, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, and a phytochemical called “limonene” which is being studied in cancer prevention and indigestion.

Orange peels specifically contain calcium, copper, magnesium, vitamin A, folate and other B vitamins and dietary fiber. As a general rule, if you decide to eat the peel of your fruits and vegetables, give them a good wash and scrub to remove dirt or other things. Choose organic whenever possible.

How much Vitamin C is in an orange?

One orange has bout 75 mg of Vitamin C, which can help boost your immune system and help your body fight infection. According to The National institute of Health, adult women only need about 75 mg a day.

To get the most vitamin C out of an orange easily, I like to cut the peel off so I can control how much of the pith I keep on the fruit. The pith has the highest amount of vitamin c.

  1. Michele says:

This smoothie was light, refreshing, and of course, citrusy! I would make this again.

  2. Kim Powell says:

I think I would like this better with a little less lemon. My half a lemon may have been too much. I generally like the combination of flavors, but for me, would like a little less lemon. The lemon seemed to overpower the other flavors

  3. Vashti Phillips says:

I used grapefruit instead of orange and skipped the lemon. It was good but not a fave.

  4. Maureen Cioni says:

This was so refreshing! I loved how light tasting it was. I’ll definitely make this one again.

  5. Jacqueline says:

Your classic citrus smoothie. I added thyme and chia seeds to add a little oomph.

  6. Gloria says:

Delicious! Wouldn’t change a thing! SOOOO GOOOOD

  7. Dawn says:

This is delicious! I can taste the vitamin C!

    • Simple Green Smoothies says:

So glad you’re gettin that immune boosting Vitamin C kick Dawn! 🙂

  8. M. Gatto says:

I only use powders to mix my smoothie with coconut water. The blend of powders I use is spinach, kale, orange peel powder. The fruits and veggies are all organic. I blend them in a blender in my kitchen. Is it okay to mix powders for a smoothie? I all so thought of adding hemp hearts, flaxseed. Is it all right to blend all of this together?

    • Simple Green Smoothies says:

Great question! We prefer the nutrients obtained from using fresh greens like kale and spinach, yet if the powdered version is what’s available to you then it’s def better than not at all! Adding hemp and flaxseed are great ways to up that protein content in your smoothie. In fact, those are two of the ingredients in our Protein Smoothie Boost!

  9. Jessica says:

I really like this one and have made it before lots of times. This time, I used a power greens mix and added a kiwifruit. Gave it a nice, tart taste.

  10. andrea rumble says:

not a lover of citrus fruits but this was made a lover of citrus smoothies outta me….

  11. Nora Long says:

This gives a refreshing twist when blending with spinach I will make this again. Next time I may add a stick of celery.

  12. Karina says:

  13. Rebecca Starkey says:

Super good! Loved the citris jump start.

  14. Karen says:

I used a blood orange which added a fun and unique flavor I really enjoyed.

  15. Sheena Burr says:

Really good…the only way to really enjoy spinach! LOL

  16. April R Eckert says:

I hadn’t added oranges to a smoothie before this! I certainly will be doing it regularly now!

  17. Julie says:

I gave this smoothie just one star. It’s been my least favorite so far….but still fun to try new combos. It was just too sharp for me. I like some tanginess but this was a little too much for me.

  18. Youlanda Jennings says:

Spinach orange smoothie is a nice citrus flavor.

  19. Holly P. says:

My son especially loved the lemon tartness! We used frozen mandarin oranges and this was another AMAZING smoothie!

  20. Elle Wood says:

I really enjoyed this smoothie, I used Meyer lemons so they were on the sweeter side. Perfectly tart and sweet at the same time.

  21. Jalisa S says:

It may have been because my banana was frozen, but all I tasted was banana

  22. Dee-Ann says:

I really like the flavor of this smoothie. All the ingredients blended nicely together so that one flavor did not over power the next. I think I will try adding coconut flakes to this next time.

  23. Andrea says:

I love lemons but this one was a little tart for me. It may have been because my lemon was bigger than my orange. It definitely made me pucker a few times.

  24. Cherlyn says:

    Delicious! Wouldn’t change a thing!

  25. Tonya says:

This is SO GOOD! I plan to make this one often. I never used oranges in my smoothie before the challenge but now will add them to my list of fruits to use.

  26. Jody says:

Sweet, full of flavor, loved the lemon

  27. Shannon Gilman says:

So I added grapefruit instead because of my personal preference and of course avocado.
Even with my changes this was delicious

  28. Shelley says:

I found this smoothie ok. I used a lime as I did not have a lemon. Might be nicer with lemon. And I added flax seeds

  29. Grace says:

Yum! The lemon really brought this tropically inspired combination together. Hemp protein powder blended in well for a refreshing breakfast replacement.

  30. Julie says:

Good but made me pucker up a bit. I think adding some chia seed or hemp see would be a good idea.

  31. Dawn says:

This was delicious! I may try adding a bit of peel as mentioned above, for a little zing. And as someone else replied, these smoothies are only as good as the fruit. My orange wasn’t as orange and juicy. So my drink was a bit more green with spinach, but I enjoyed rawkin it!

  32. Mary says:

Loved the ingredient mixtures, drink was tasty, easy to go down. I thought it would be very citrusy but it was all the right amount of citrusy.

  33. Jennifer A. says:

I love how citrusy this one is! I added coconut oil and chia seeds.

  34. Cindy Savage says:

I love this smoothie… however I wanted to add a “wild” ingredient to personalize this amazing smoothie! So my take on this Spinach Orange Smoothie is… first I swapped kale for spinach and added 1/2 a quartered raw beet! Wow! Made this smoothie a deep beautiful purple! And the flavor… perfect!!

  35. Trudy Richardson says:

I love this smoothie. I liked the citrus combination of orange and lemon. It was so refreshing on a hot day. I also made it a meal replacement by adding 1/4 avocado, 2 TBLS hemp hearts, and 1 TBLS organic superfoods powder. I also added goji berries. I will definitely make this smoothie again. I put the smoothie in a special glass and enjoyed the outdoors while sipping such a wonderful drink.

  36. Hilde Johansen says:

Yummy. A definite favourite. Did switch the coconut water with regular water

  37. Bonnie Primm says:

REFRESHING and Creamy! I love the texture the banana gives this smoothie!!!!

  38. Meagan says:

I loved this one…so light & refreshing! Next time I may try some mint or cilantro because I will for sure be blending this one again

  39. Jennetta says:

Loved it! Didn’t taste the banana, which I usually do. Lemon wasn’t too overpowering either. I think I’d add ginger.

  40. Sophia Allison says:

Loved this love the citrus flavors that come through, the banana adds a nice thickness to it too.

  41. Tam Tam says:

Tasty but I prefer frozen fruit.

  42. Kira says:

This was really good but would have been better had my orange been ripe. The lemon and banana really came through.

  43. Jenn Lynch says:

Not my favorite, just because the pith from all the citrus ended up a little stringy in mine. It might’ve been avoided if I had frozen the citrus…maybe next time!

  44. Deanna Brandau says:

I swapped coconut water with just water and added a whole banana and honey. This is my favorite so far in the challenge. Loved it. Took it on the go for walk in the neighborhood. It was very refreshing and better than it looks.

  45. Kimberly S Robinson says:

I made this smoothie with frozen spinach cubes since the other items are better fresh, and I like a cold, slushy smoothie. Unfortunately, the extra water from the cubes ended up making it more watery than I prefer. (Some time in the freezer would’ve fixed this if I had the time to wait.) But the flavor was still bright and citrus-y. I had a good ratio of lemon to orange, so it was sweet-tart; a good way to start my day.

  46. Kim says:

It was good, next time I may leave out the lemon. Refreshing!

  47. Sara says:

Holy Heck!! Day 4: Here we go! This smoothie is so yummy! I wasn’t sure about the half lemon but it was so necessary!! Loved how citrus-y it is!! You NEED to try this smoothie if you haven’t yet!! So much vitamin C from the orange and lemon and all of those electrolytes from the coconut water!! Cheers to your health!

  48. Jackie Fehrenbacher says:

I didn’t change anything about this smoothie. This smoothie was so delish’ .. You can taste a little bit of everything in this smoothie.

  49. Megan says:

This smoothie is great for a summer afternoon with its citrus taste !

  50. Andre L says:

Day 4 of Smoothie Challenge – Spinach Orange. Nicely citrusy! Let’s me know it’s summertime! I always use the self cleaning method for my @vitamix blender. Tip – to save dish soap, put in a spritzer bottle. You’ll use so much less each time. @simplegreensmoothies #simplegreensmoothies✌

  51. Darlene says:

So delicious! Added 2 Tbsp oatmeal and 2 Tbsp hemp hearts. Kept me going until lunch! Downed this one fast, lol

  52. Daniella G Brissett says:

Loved this recipe I added ginger and frozen coconut meat. It was delicious!

  53. Julie Quinn says:

First time trying coconut water. Didn’t mind that, but it was a little too lemony for my taste. It wasn’t terrible. Just not my favorite. My husband liked his. Probably not on our rotation. Too much work cutting up oranges and lemons to not be my favorite.

  54. Christina says:

I loved the lemon in this smoothie recipe I did add chia seeds very tasty I enjoyed it very much!

  55. Pam Izzo says:

Really liked this and made to recipe no substitutes. Did add protein powder. Not real sweet but sweet enough. Very fresh tasting.

  56. Anita says:

The coconut water gave a different and pleasant twist. Enjoyed it.

  57. Cassandra Roberts says:

This was excellent with the coconut smoothie cubes added!

  58. Samantha says:

This smoothie ended up really lemony for me, maybe that’s because I swapped out coconut water for regular water, or I just had a really big lemon.

  59. Jessie says:

Love this smoothie! I loved the combo of coconut water and citrus fruits. So tasty!

    • Laurapeters says:

This one I had trouble blending the orange but will try again with the suggestion of slicing the orange better. I enjoyed the hint of lemon flavour too

  60. Shalona Brown says:

Delicious! DE-Licious! Plain and simple ‍♀️ This one I’m keeping! I loved it. I used a frozen banana…one and a half because I like them think and smooth.

  61. Rovey says:

I like the simplicity of this smoothie . I used frozen spinach that I previously froze to get that cold creamy texture. Works well and it taste good even after adding super greens powder.

  62. Marsha says:

Another good tasting smoothie! Perfect balance.
(Added 1/2 avacado …only had 1/2 banana left..hubby eats them alot lol..he also is drinking a smoothie which is a good way of sneeking in the greens!) I usually put cucumber/celery in mine,I think this would be good in this also. First for coconut water..nice flavor.

  63. Shawna McCabe says:

For me, this is the classic green smoothie. So easy to make, drink and “sell” to the kids. Ha. It tastes great and that color! It’s the perfect wow in a glass.

  64. Taylor Gonzalez says:

Day 4 Smoothie- Spinach and Orange is by far my favorite so far in the 10-day challenge! Love the zesty tartness of the lemon and citrus flavor of the orange. I am huge fan of Coconut water so I felt like this smoothie was made for me. Definitely going to keep this recipe around and make this smoothie on a weekly basis!

  65. adele restrepo says:

This is one of my favorite smoothies: it’s citrusy and sweet without being overbearing. I prefer to drink mine room temperature, so I use all fresh ingredients. What a great, refreshing drink to start the day with veggies and all my vitamin c!

  66. Annette says:

I found the Spinach Orange Smoothie light and refreshing. I typically don’t care for coconut water but it’s good in this smoothie. Next time I’ll add an extra orange.

  67. Tina Migielicz says:

Loved this smoothie! The lemon was perfect.

  68. Betsy Alvarez says:

I put the hole Orange and came out really thick still really good

  69. Dora Suarez says:

Yummy. Love this. I didn’t have frozen citrus so it was more of a juice conistency, however that is fine as I’m having this as a mid-morning snack so is a bit ligther and refreshing. I know with frozen citrus it would have been thicker or I could have also added ice. A keeper for the summer.

  70. Kathy Overstreet says:

OMG! The smoothie today is my absolute favorite. #Rawk On!!!

  71. AnnMarie says:

    Just Delicious!

Not so much a fan of the lemon, but this was pretty good! 🙂

  75. Deborah says:

Of the Summer Challenge this one is my favorite so far. I peeled both my lemon and my orange and having read the blog post I wish I had put some of the zest in with the smoothie – next time. I will add that note to my recipe page. I thought the lemon would be overpowering, but it isn’t. This is light and refreshing with a light citrusy taste. Love it!

  76. Laura says:

Day 4 of 10 day smoothie challenge; pretty tasty! Tasted like orange juice, lol! Might add some herbs to cut back on the citrus flavor next time.

  77. Cristina Ribeiro says:

    Citrus tasting

  78. Shannon Stroschein says:

This was a perfect smoothie for today! Crisp and fresh and perfect for the 100 degree weather were experiencing right now!

  79. Laura Jankowski says:

It was very tasty. The spinach gave it an a little off flavor so I added more banana and it was great. In fact, I could have gone for another one, but didn’t have enough time this morning. Will have it this evening, with less spinach which I love, and a bit more lemon for a bit of a night cap. I love these challenges they are really fun.

  80. Kate says:

Perfect early summer morning breakfast! So delicious!

  81. Jen says:

If I am using a nutribullet can I blend the ingredients at the same time

    • SGS Rawkstar Jess says:

Hey Jen! With a Nutribullet, I recommend blending the coconut water and spinach first and then the remaining ingredients.
