I’m an introvert who loves being a part of intentional communities. I know the introvert + community-building combo doesn’t make sense, but it’s totally true. I’m guessing it’s because I’m a gemini. I’m on a minimalist journey to shed the junk and keep the good. Fuzzy socks, white paper and hot tea make me smile. I live in Walnut Creek, a little, cozy downtown area just 25 miles east of San Francisco. I met my husband in L.A. working for an Educational Theatre Program (we got to act in plays and teach kids about healthy living). We have a daughter, Zoe Joy, who was born at a hospital on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. She likes to say she’s from “Hollywood.” My husband sings and writes music. We gave up our hollywood/rock star dreams to live the simple life on Kauai for a few years. Loved Hawaii, but love the city life more. California is our home.

Jadah, how have green smoothies changed your life?

In three months, I lost 26 pounds by starting one insanely simple habit. I started drinking green smoothies. My friends and family started asking what I was doing to make such transformative changes in my lifestyle. I wanted to show everyone I came in contact with how easy it was to blend up leafy greens. The people around me started buying their own blenders, making green smoothies, and getting the same results as me: weight loss, lots of energy, and cravings for healthy food.

People ask how I’ve maintained the weight loss (because to this day those 25+ pounds have never come back on). And my answer is focus on progress not perfection. Sometimes we’re chasing a very specific weight loss goal, and when we don’t get there, we feel like a failure.

I personally focus on daily habits. Just do at least one small healthy habit a day. And experiment with what works best for you and your lifestyle. I’ve tried everything: Master Cleanse (lemonade diet), Paleo, South Beach diet, Weight Watchers, the list goes on. Most of those were all short term and so ultimately don’t last as a long-term lifestyle choice.

I found what works best for me is a meal plan + shopping lists that are aligned with the type of food that I know is good for my body. I feel crazy busy as a mom and so if I don’t have to meal plan and come up with a new shopping list every week, it saves me so much time and brain energy.

That’s why I love using our Fresh Start 21-day cleanse even when I’m not cleansing. I use it as a guideline to how I eat 80% of the time. I still drink wine, eat bread, order desserts at restaurants, sneak some candy every now and then.

It’s my mission to help families be healthier, to have the energy they need to live a life they’re passionate about, and the best way I know how to do that… get people addicted to green smoothies. And then when they’re ready, take their healthy lifestyle to the next level by eating more plant-based foods. When we focus on eating better (over counting calories and eating less), there’s not a whole lot of room for the not-so-good-for-you foods.

 

My favorite smoothie is…

If we have it my way, we make Beginner’s Luck everyday. It’s a nice little tropical party for your taste buds. I love sprinkling chia seeds on top of my smoothies for a good mix of protein and healthy fats!

 

I feel most alive when…

I listen to music. Music not only lets me connect and relate to other people, but it also let’s me escape into far away places. Plato was right when he says, “Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul.” We turn up the music loud in our home and let our daughter dance on the coffee table. Yes, I’m that mom.

 

I couldn’t live without…

Books! Getting rid of books is the hardest part of my minimalism journey. I collect them, I loan them, I love them. I love the smell of history lingering between pages, and I’m obsessed with pinning cozy, little book nooks on Pinterest. Books ground me and my family–– that’s why we read Shel Silverstein poems at the dinner table as a family.

 

I’m addicted to…

Board games. I can stay up until 4am playing games like Dutch Blitz, Catch Phrase and Monopoly. My husband actually proposed to me in front of all of our friends in the middle of the game Cranium. I had to guess the phrase “Will you marry me” during the charades challenge, and it was an epic fail (I couldn’t guess it for the life of me). Luckily, when the timer went out, he still got down on one knee, and I totally said, “Yes!”

 

My guilty pleasure is…

Macaroni & cheese– seriously my carb nemesis. I don’t discriminate either, I will gobble it up whether it is my grandmother’s southern recipe made from scratch or the boxed one you buy from Trader Joes (and not the light one). And mashed potatoes is right up there too.

    Im so excited for this new beginning. I’m looonnnggg over due for a detox (this is my first one) and I have vowed to not buy any new clothes in my current size. I have followed you guys on Instagram for a few months now and I am finally gaining that motivation and momentum needed to jump start this lifestyle change.
