Jadah Sellner: Co-Founder / Community Builder

I’m an introvert who loves being a part of intentional communities and building tribes. I know the introvert + community-building combo doesn’t make sense, but it’s totally true. I’m guessing it’s because I’m a gemini (half party animal + half hermit crab). I live in Walnut Creek, a cozy downtown area just 25 miles east of San Francisco. I met my husband in L.A. touring as an actor for an Educational Theatre Program (we taught kids about healthy living), so the performing arts are a happy place for our family. My husband sings and writes music for children. We gave up our hollywood/rock star dreams to live the simple life on Kauai for a few years. Loved Hawaii, but love the city life more. California is our home.

Jadah, how have green smoothies changed your life?

I started one simple habit in the summer of 2011: drinking green smoothies everyday. And in three months, I lost over 25 pounds. My friends and family started asking what I was doing. I was beyond excited to spread the word about how easy it was to blend up leafy greens with fruits. People I love (including my friend Jen and amazing business partner) started buying their own blenders, making green smoothies, and getting the same results as me: lots of energy, weight loss and craving healthier foods. I believe that green smoothies are the kickstart to making healthy eating a lifestyle–– not a diet.

As a mom with a crazy busy schedule, I discovered that meal plans + shopping lists keep me on track to fueling my body with plant-based recipes 80% of the time.

My favorite green smoothie is…

Beginner’s Luck…like every single day. It’s the first smoothie I make for any one new to the world of green smoothies. And I’m currently obsessed with adding almond meal + coconut oil to my green smoothies for a good mix of protein and healthy fats!

I feel most alive when…

I listen to music. Music not only lets me connect and relate to other people, but it also let’s me escape into far away places. Plato was right when he says, “Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul.” We turn up the music loud in our home and let our daughter dance on the coffee table. Yes, I’m that mom.

I couldn’t live without…

Books! I collect them, I loan them, I love them. I love the smell of history lingering between pages. As a life-long learner, books feed my curiosity. My family and I love to sit on a blanket in the park and just read. We also read Shel Silverstein poems together at the dinner table.

I’m addicted to…

Board games. I can stay up until 4am playing games like Dutch Blitz, Catch Phrase and Monopoly. My husband actually proposed to me in front of all of our friends in the middle of the game Cranium. I had to guess the phrase “Will you marry me” during the charades challenge, and it was an epic fail (I couldn’t guess it for the life of me). Luckily, when the timer went out, he still got down on one knee, and I totally said, “Yes!”

My guilty pleasure is…

Macaroni & cheese– seriously my carb nemesis. I will gobble it up whether it is my grandmother’s southern recipe made from scratch or the boxed one you buy from Trader Joes (and not the light one). A big scoop of mashed potatoes is a close runner-up.

Have you signed up for our FREE 30-Day Green Smoothie Challenge yet? We’d love for you to be a part of our green smoothie lovin’ tribe.

I just gave myself a birthday present. I just purchased the fresh start 21. I am so excited and anxious to start it as soon as it gets here.
My wish for my 67th birthday (2/4) is to get healthier and feel better because I have so much left to do and enjoy in this life. My children have been encouraging me to do some of the things I placed on hold to rear them. Now that they are adults they want me to take care of me and my grandchildren have said the same thing.
I saw my mother’s health deteriorate as she went from being an active person to a couch potato. I had promised myself I would not be that way. Well I saw an image in the mirror that looks just like my mother but it is actually me so i have to change that now.
So I say “Let’s Get This Party Started”.

    Hey Jadah!
I saw you speak at World Domination Summit last summer, and was so moved by your talk. About a month later, I was hooked on green smoothies! Thank you for providing so many awesome recipes and your 30-day challenge – it takes all the stress out of knowing what to do. I just signed up for the Fresh Start 21 and am really stoked (and slightly intimidated) to get started. Like you I am an introvert who loves community. It’s fabulous getting to know you better through your profile – love your proposal story! Have you ever played the game Dominion? That’s one of my favs. Keep rawkin what you do!

Yay Chelsea! So happy you hopped on the green smoothie wagon. Jen and I will be leading a WDS Academy this year, which we’re super excited about. I have never played Dominion, but I definitely want to check it out now!

I just want to know will these smootie have you going to the bathroom. ( would be good for me )

    • Jadah Sellner 2.15.2015 at 4:08 pm #

The increase in fiber definitely helps with that. Fruits and veggies really help keep things moving along. :-) Just make sure you are drinking plenty of water to help flush it out of your body. Good luck!

Pearl, we’re excited you’re making steps towards healthy eating with a green smoothie. Always consult with your health care provider if you have any questions about what fruits are best for you and your body too. Everyone has different needs and restrictions when it.

    Hi Ladies,
My question is: the coco nut oil, are you talking about the cooking coconut oil or a real coconut. If so, then how do I get the oil out of the coconut. Not trying to sound goofy, but I just don’t know. Please help.
    thanks

    • Jadah Sellner 2.15.2015 at 4:05 pm #

Hi Valicia, we buy coconut oil in a jar. You can usually find at a local grocery store or online like Amazon. Hope that helps!

    Hi, Jadah!
I have lived in Hawaii, too! I loved all the fresh pineapple and coconuts! Wish we had them easily accessible here in Utah. I love gardening, too. I cannot get enough veggies and wish I could grow them all year long. But I love the snow, too. (Not readily available in Hawaii.) We recently just moved, and as we are clearing our house of unwanted things, we are also clearing our pantry and our bodies of things we don’t want to carry around with us anymore. So, here’s to minimizing and being healthy inside and out, from Utah!

    • Jadah Sellner 1.13.2015 at 10:41 am #

Aloha Jenn! Yes, Hawaii has a special place in our heart. But we’re a snowboarding family, so we like to be close enough to the snow too. Stay warm and healthy!
