Meet Jadah

Jadah Sellner: Co-Founder / Community + Marketing Director

I’m an introvert who loves to build community with awesome people (I know it doesn’t make sense, but it’s totally true). I’m on a minimalist journey to shed the junk and keep the good. Fuzzy socks and hot tea make me smile. I live in Walnut Creek, a little cozy down town area just 25 miles east of San Francisco. I met my husband in L.A. at Kaiser Permanente’s Educational Theatre Programs (we got to act in plays and teach kids about healthy living). We had a baby girl named Zoe Joy born at Kaiser on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. We gave up our rock star dreams to live the simple life on Kauai for a few years. Loved it, but love the city life more.

My favorite smoothie is…
The sweet, tangy and bright green smoothie I made with one kiwi, 1 banana, 1 cup frozen mango, 1 cup frozen pineapple, 1 avocado, 2 cups kale, and 2 cups water. It’s a nice little wake-up call to your taste buds and your metabolism. I love sprinkling chia seeds on top of my smoothies too!

I feel most alive when…
I listen to music. Music not only lets me connect and relate to other people, but it also let’s me escape into far away places. Plato was right when he says, “Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul.” We turn up the music loud in our home and let our daughter dance on the coffee table.

I couldn’t live without…
Books! Getting rid of books is the hardest part of my minimalism journey. I collect them, I loan them, I love them. I love the smell of history lingering between pages, and I’m obsessed with cozy book nooks. Books ground me and my family– that’s why we read Shel Silverstein poems at the dinner table as a family.

I’m addicted to…
Board games. I can stay up until 4am playing games like Dutch Blitz, Catch Phrase and Monopoly. My husband actually proposed to me in front of all of our friends in the middle of the game Cranium. I had to guess the phrase “Will you marry me” during the charades challenge, and it was an epic fail (I couldn’t guess it for the life of me). Luckily, when the timer went out, he still got down on one knee, and I totally said, “Yes!”

My guilty pleasure is…
Macaroni and cheese– seriously my carb nemesis. I don’t discriminate either, I will gobble it up whether it is my grandmother’s southern recipe made from scratch or the boxed one you buy from Trader Joes (and not the light one).

The recipes I have try we’re not from this website, as I am new to Simple Green Smoothies. I know it’s trial and error, so I will continue to try until I get it right.. Looking forward to trying Simple Green Smoothies :) .. Thanks

I love the green smoothie idea, but every single one I have made!! I don’t like!!.. No matter how much I wash my greens, fruit, etc, it still taste like I’ve bent down and bit into the dirt.. What gives?? It seems that no combination i try works. Please give me something that will sweeten, and mask that earthy taste.. This is something I want to incorporate into my everyday lifestyle..

    • Jadah and Jen 5.11.2013 at 7:48 pm #

Hi Valerie! We are so sorry to hear this :-( Are you using the recipes that we have on our website? If you are, then we would suggest cutting the amount of greens in half (at least!). This will help your taste buds get used to the leafy green flavors. We think that spinach has the least potent flavor out of all the leafy greens, so you may want to stick with that for a bit–or any leafy green that is easier for you to eat. We like to consider banana to be “nature’s sweetener.” It does a pretty good job of masking the “dirt” flavor. Really hope this helps!

Hi! Is the 30 day challenge just for the month of April or can one start at anytime?

    • Jadah and Jen 4.15.2013 at 6:42 pm #

We have a specific challenge for just the month of April that ANYONE can join at ANY TIME. But we also have an e-book available so you can do your own 30-day challenge whenever you want. The challenge is meant to teach how to drink a wide variety of green smoothies and then incorporate them into every day life :-) Here is the link to the e-book!

So can you let me know which is better for me and my sugars.

    • Jadah and Jen 4.15.2013 at 6:43 pm #

We recommend using a website like My Fitness Pal to check the sugar content in any smoothie that you are making. It is a pretty great site we have heard from a lot of people!

  6. Cheryl 4.12.2013 at 6:03 am #

Hi do the smoothies make your sugar go up and what smoothies drink that will not make my sugar go up.

    • Jadah and Jen 4.12.2013 at 3:10 pm #

Hi Cheryl! It depends on which smoothie you drink. There is natural sugar in fruit, but some fruits have higher content of sugar (i.e. banana). This natural sugar, however, is much better for you than processed sugar that is added to other foods and drinks. Its natures sweetener :-)

Hi Jadah so nice to meet you. I shared the Beginners Luck Smoothie with my fam tonite. Not everyone was receptive but I loved it .I am by far not a veggie lover but I’m so excited to have stumbled across your site and my grandson and I are planning for our shopping adventure. I want to join the challenge although a bit late but I have been unable to sign in for some reason. Am I too tardy for the Spring party? If I’m too late I would definitely like a jump start for the summer challenge. My question is should these smoothies replace meals? My need to lead a healthier life is to loose some unneeded, unhealthy, totally un-sexy pounds, lol. Jadah please help me to get on the rawtastic train. Also how do I going about purchasing the ebook and the coveted coconut deodorant?

    • Jadah and Jen 4.12.2013 at 5:00 am #

Hi Saafiyah! Could you email us these questions at simplegreensmoothies(at)gmail(dot)com?
These are all great questions, and we will be able to keep track of our conversation better through email. Thanks!

  8. Sandy 4.11.2013 at 3:35 pm #

I am doing the 30 day challenge and love it. I am totally hooked. I bought coconut oil today and want to incorporate it in my smoothies but I am not sure how. Do you melt it or put it in as a solid? I am so glad that I found your website. Day 11 and I feel great. Thank you.

    • Jadah and Jen 4.12.2013 at 5:02 am #

Hi Sandy! We normally put coconut oil in the smoothies as it comes in the container. Hope this helps! So glad you are feeling great :-)

  9. Jen 3.24.2013 at 1:56 pm #

Just purchased your eBook and am excited to start on the 1st with you ladies! Thanks for dedicating a part of your lives to spreading healthy lifestyle ideas around…plus, two gals who love Shel Silverstein and half-and-half MUST be on to something good! :)

~Jen in Danville (just down the 680 from you, Jadah!)

    • Jadah S 4.1.2013 at 12:40 am #

That’s so cool you’re in Danville. Sideboard Restaurant is one of my favorite places to eat. Thank you for being a part of our community! :-)

    Hi Jadeh,

I am so glad to see You ( and Jen ) start this site, very informative . I have committed to joining the 30 day challenge, you see for the 1st time I really stuck to my New Years Resolution and called it a new me ( which I have adopted as my New Years motto-LOL) I started a three day green drink the beginning of the new year and was shocked at the 11 pound weight lost, but the real killer was how great I felt the energy I had, how I didn’t feel hungry and I wasn’t sluggish, so since then I have replaced coffee & a buttered roll in the morning with a green drink & a protein shake for lunch and I haven’t looked back, I just love the way I feel , So now I have committed to joining the 30 day challenge April 1st, I’m very excited and ready to go. I will post pics and my thoughts as we go – looking forward to this ” New Me” and want to thank you both for sharing – looking forward to getting to know you both!!

    • Jadah S 4.1.2013 at 12:39 am #

We are so excited to have you join us Dana! Please keep us posted on your journey. Hugs!!!

  11. LIZ 3.11.2013 at 2:58 pm #

    Hi Jadah,

I want to start drinking green smoothies. I drink a protein shake in the morning and night since I do crossfit, at what time should I drink the green smoothie?…should I take it for meal?

    • Jadah S 3.20.2013 at 5:06 pm #

Liz, that’s awesome you’re doing Crossfit! Jen does Crossfit too. I’m going to start next week– I’m so scared. :-)

You could drink a green smoothie pre-workout and add a protein powder of your choice. I like using hemp protein powder. To make sure you have enough energy to sustain you, you may want to eat a handful of almonds and/or a hardboiled egg about 30 minutes after your green smoothie. Hope that helps.

    HI Jadah,

I absolutely love your bio. Love the name Zoe, love your bio picture, the smoothie you described sounds AMAZING, and.. I too am a book and board game junkie lol. Funny, I actually understood your opening statement VERY well. “I’m an introvert who loves to build community with awesome people”. Sounds like something I would say lol. I can tell we would get a long great if I lived in California lol. Thanks for creating such an awesome site. I can’t WAIT for the smoothie challenge :-)

    • Jadah S 3.20.2013 at 4:56 pm #

Happy to connect with you! And I’m super happy you’re joining the challenge Torrie! Hugs!!!

    Hi Jadah,

I have to agree Trader joes’s frozen Mac and cheese is out of this world, you have to try their MAC AND CHEESE BALLS!!! terrific…..

    • Jadah S 3.20.2013 at 4:55 pm #

Glad to find someone who knows all about TJ’s mac and cheese. :-)

  15. Maite 1.11.2013 at 11:22 am #

    Hi Jadah,
I’m so happy that i started the challenge 11 days ago! I feel just great, and I always full now! Thats super new to me, hahhaa I have been hungry ALL my life, but since i’ve started, I have to remember myself to eat snacks between meals :) But even tho I have been eating very very well since I started the challenge, I have not notice any changes in my body… So i was just wondering how long did it take for you to notice it?
(PS: i’m still motivated, probably going to do this until I’m an ancient!)

    • Jadah S 2.8.2013 at 9:10 pm #

Hi Maite! How did the challenge go for you? Not everyone will experience the same weight loss results, as our bodies respond so differently to foods. You may want to use less fruits and more leafy greens. We will have a summer detox coming up that will focus on sharing low-calorie green smoothie recipes. Cheers!

  16. Dara 1.7.2013 at 2:10 pm #

I am new to smoothies but I am excited. I do have one question about all of the sugar from the fruit. I don’t have a problem with Diabetes or anything but I do try to keep my sugar intake in check.

What are your thoughts on the sugar in these smoothies?

    • Jadah S 1.8.2013 at 8:49 pm #

Welcome to the green smoothie world! I’m excited for you. Fruit definitely has sugar in it, but our bodies were made to digest it. If you have major health concerns, I recommend people to consult their doctors about their fruit intake. But if you don’t suffer from in major health issues or chronic conditions, an abundance of fruit is perfect for our bodies. Not only do they help boost our immunities and keep us feeling full because of all the fiber, they also taste so good. The great thing about green smoothies is the leafy greens actually help prevent sugar spikes when mixed with fruit. Hope that helps. :-)

I love Shel S. I used to make songs out of the poems for my little sister many, many years ago.

    • Jadah S 1.8.2013 at 8:41 pm #

That sounds so sweet! I’ll have to try that with my daughter. She loves to sing too.

  22. Arthur 12.22.2012 at 8:49 am #

I’m looking at trying some new recipes with collard greens. Will that work in place of spinach.

    Thanks,

    Arthur Robinson, MEd,LAT,ATC

    • Jadah S 12.28.2012 at 1:15 pm #

Arthur, collard greens are a little bit more bitter, but you can definitely replace the spinach with it. Bananas are great to sweeten it up a bit.

  23. Arthur 12.22.2012 at 8:47 am #

Can collard greens be used in place of spinach? I’m looking at trying some new recipes with collard greens.

    Thanks,

    Arthur Robinson, MEd,LAT,ATC

Your smoothies are sooooooo awesome! LOVE your whole site and mission to bring these treats of health to all…thank you! Can’t wait to try the strawberry mint popsicles :)

    • Jadah S 11.10.2012 at 2:43 pm #

Let me know how the popsicles turn out. If you don’t like tart, definitely add some coconut milk and/or almond milk. I love freezing any leftover smoothies and making popsicles. My daughter gets a kick out of eating popsicles for breakfast! :-)

  25. Angela 11.8.2012 at 8:24 pm #

I can’t believe I didn’t know the story about your marriage proposal! It’s so sweet. BTW I also loveeee mac n cheese, who doesn’t!? There are tons of amazing mac n cheese places here in NYC! :-)

    • Jadah S 11.10.2012 at 2:41 pm #

I’m so happy I could share something new. And the Trader Joe’s frozen mac n cheese is the best. But NYC mac n cheese sounds even better!

      • Jen H 11.10.2012 at 5:53 pm #

I agree— the TJ frozen mac is out of this world!
