Turn a Fruit Smoothie into a Green Smoothie
Transforming a fruit smoothie into a green smoothie is super easy and the added health benefits don’t hurt.
Adding leafy greens to a fruit smoothie provides extra nutrients to break down the natural sugar in fruit, which then allows your body to burn that energy slower + longer. That means you aren’t hungry an hour after downing this blueberry spinach smoothie!
You can take any healthy smoothie recipes you love and add 1 cup (or a handful) to them if they don’t already have leafy greens, and you won’t even taste the difference. Yet you can be proud of yourself for adding a whole cup of spinach to your body!
New to leafy greens? Start with 1/4 cup in this blueberry spinach smoothie, then work your way up to a full cup. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your tastebuds adapt to that leafy green goodness.
Ingredient Swaps
I always say smoothies are versatile, however, this especially applies to any smoothie with berries. There are so many types of berries available, and pretty much any of them can be swapped in for the blueberries in this recipe. I love the Costco bags of frozen mixed berries, and often use that in this smoothie.
Any dairy-free milk works in place of the almond milk base. You might get a different taste + texture depending on what you use, yet you might find a new fav combo too! Looking for a non-banana substitute? Mango works great, and has a little less sugar than banana.
Finding the Best Almond Milk
There are so many almond milk brands on the market right now! How do I know which one is best? My rawkstar team actually tested as many brands as we could find, to bring you our top almond milk picks.
Yet did you know making your own almond milk is super easy too? I’ve got a no-fail recipe, along with a few tips to help you make delicious homemade almond milk as well. Choosing your fav option only adds to the value of this blueberry smoothie.
Organic vs Non-Organic Smoothie Ingredients
While I try to buy organic ingredients for my smoothies, it’s not always possible or in the budget. So I use EWG’s Dirty Dozen guide to know which produce should be organic if possible.
This guide provides the most up-to-date info on a variety of produce, so I know what I’m putting into my body, as well as feeding to my kids. Some ingredients for this blueberry spinach smoothie are on the Dirty Dozen list, so I make sure to buy the organic versions.

Notes
- You can swap blueberries for any berry you can find. I like to use pre-packaged frozen mixed berries to give it a strong robust flavor.
- Make sure to use at least 1 frozen fruit for a refreshingly cool smoothie.
- Swap almond milk with the plant milk of your choice, or swap with water.
- To lower the natural sugar in this recipe replace 1 banana with 1/4 avocado or 1/4 cup frozen cauliflower.
Very good. Quite thick. Think my banana was too small as mine darker than the picture. I will increase water next time. Have to stand right with the vitamix as blender jar has issues and have to hold it in place so know I mixed well. Tasty and love all the vitamins it has. Great recipes but after the salad experience not surprised that the recipes are good. Looking forward to the rest of the 10 days. great start.
Blueberry spinach smoothie was very thick, which I like. My recipe had water as the liquid but probably would use almond or oat milk next time I make it. I could have used a little more fruit flavor but not bad overall.
You can definitely taste the bananas in this one. I added some Chia seeds to the recipe.
The blueberry spinach smoothie is often my โgo toโ smoothie. It is refreshing and replaces a meal adding a protein powder.
The smoothie had a great flavor compared to the way I normally make a Blueberry smoothie. Truly grateful for the change and added nutrition.
I love blueberries! I use frozen so really frosty and yummy. Love sneaking in greens because you can’t even tell. This is so fruity and tasty! 5 stars
I didn’t think I’d like it, because I thought I’d prefer 1/2 c. almond milk & 1/2 c. yogurt instead of 1 c. almond milk, but I followed the recipe, and thought it was good. I didn’t have the recommended protein powder, so added 1 T. ground flax seed, 1 T. chia seed, and 1/4 c. roasted unsalted pepitas. Thanks for the recipe.
Like drinking sherbet for breakfast. Yum
Love the blueberries flavorโฆ and the fact that the spinach goes unnoticedโฆ
I’m pretty sure any fruit and/or berry smoothie is going to be highly rated by me. I’m not sure if I can claim that actually made YOUR recipe, but I will proceed and you will understand why I say that. I have an abundance of leaf lettuce in my garden so I substituted leaf lettuce for spinach. I added five dates for some additional nutrients and sweetness. I recently bought a gallon of raw goat milk from a local Amish farmer so that was used instead of the almond milk and the protein powder thusly:
1 cup leaf lettuce pressed down
1 cup raw goat milk
ยฝ cup blueberries
ยฝ cup strawberries
1 banana
5 dates
Ice
I liked the results.
Hey Brother Moondog – Pretty darn close! I’m glad you enjoyed it and made accommodations based on what you had available. And a few extra dates never hurt anyone! ๐
Very simple very delicious. This was my husband’s favorite so far. I love that it’s a dark purple color so we can’t see that there is spinach in it
I used oat milk instead of almond milk, no protein powder. It was great.
This was my personal favorite so far because I love berries, banana’s and spinach. Tasted great. I had it for breakfast and made it to lunch without having to have a mid-morning snack.
Love this one, definitely a favorite! And I love the simple ingredients.
This is my favorite so far :-). Love the blueberry and banana combination! I will be making this again soon!
Excellent smoothie with great blueberry flavor.
These are some of my favorite ingredients to use in a smoothie, so I loved this smoothie.
