Turn a Fruit Smoothie into a Green Smoothie

Transforming a fruit smoothie into a green smoothie is super easy and the added health benefits don’t hurt.

Adding leafy greens to a fruit smoothie provides extra nutrients to break down the natural sugar in fruit, which then allows your body to burn that energy slower + longer. That means you aren’t hungry an hour after downing this blueberry spinach smoothie!

You can take any healthy smoothie recipes you love and add 1 cup (or a handful) to them if they don’t already have leafy greens, and you won’t even taste the difference. Yet you can be proud of yourself for adding a whole cup of spinach to your body!

New to leafy greens? Start with 1/4 cup in this blueberry spinach smoothie, then work your way up to a full cup. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your tastebuds adapt to that leafy green goodness.

Ingredient Swaps

I always say smoothies are versatile, however, this especially applies to any smoothie with berries. There are so many types of berries available, and pretty much any of them can be swapped in for the blueberries in this recipe. I love the Costco bags of frozen mixed berries, and often use that in this smoothie.

Any dairy-free milk works in place of the almond milk base. You might get a different taste + texture depending on what you use, yet you might find a new fav combo too! Looking for a non-banana substitute? Mango works great, and has a little less sugar than banana.

Finding the Best Almond Milk

There are so many almond milk brands on the market right now! How do I know which one is best? My rawkstar team actually tested as many brands as we could find, to bring you our top almond milk picks.

Yet did you know making your own almond milk is super easy too? I’ve got a no-fail recipe, along with a few tips to help you make delicious homemade almond milk as well. Choosing your fav option only adds to the value of this blueberry smoothie.

Organic vs Non-Organic Smoothie Ingredients

While I try to buy organic ingredients for my smoothies, it’s not always possible or in the budget. So I use EWG’s Dirty Dozen guide to know which produce should be organic if possible.

This guide provides the most up-to-date info on a variety of produce, so I know what I’m putting into my body, as well as feeding to my kids. Some ingredients for this blueberry spinach smoothie are on the Dirty Dozen list, so I make sure to buy the organic versions.

Notes

  • You can swap blueberries for any berry you can find. I like to use pre-packaged frozen mixed berries to give it a strong robust flavor.
  • Make sure to use at least 1 frozen fruit for a refreshingly cool smoothie.
  • Swap almond milk with the plant milk of your choice, or swap with water.
  • To lower the natural sugar in this recipe replace 1 banana with 1/4 avocado or 1/4 cup frozen cauliflower.

Hi Jen, I just realized that your blueberry spinach smoothie in the 10 day challenge book I received says water instead of almond milk. I did in fact use water and not almond milk like some of the reviews mentioned. I was kind of wondering about this as I thought I made the wrong recipe. I will have to try it with almond milk at some point.

Loved this smoothie! Just got in from overseas and made it for a light dinner. I always have spinach and berries in my smoothies, so this was a great recipe for me.

I loved the blueberries. Maybe I am unique and strange, but I donโ€™t like milk (or yogurt) in my smoothies. I donโ€™t like them to be too creamy and rich. I like them fruity.

Really, really good. I have constantly been amazed at how the spinach does not detract from the flavor. I look forward to more deliciousness.

Wow amazing smoothie! I really enjoyed this one, just the right amount of sweetness and good combination of fruits and veggies. Needless to say, it didn’t last long in my cup….. Definitely a favourite!

Blueberries, strawberries, and bananas are a favorite summer dessert I enjoy, so naturally I really enjoyed this smoothie. I doubled every ingredient except the banana and also added hemp seeds since I used it as a meal replacement.

Hmmm … a bit bland probably because of the substitutions… seems to be missing something… will stick with our existing morning breakfast smoothie recipe.
All very familiar ingredients because they are all in our morning breakfast smoothie … substituted unsweet coconut milk for almond milk and avocado for banana (unfortunately I cannot do bananas any more). Morning smoothie is more substantial but since just trying this recipe in the evening did not boost it with anything.
Oh … did make watermelon smoothie for my husband today and he enjoyed it. Froze watermelon overnight and even in my Vitamix had to add a bit of liquid … which diluted the flavor … so next time will set watermelon out to thaw a bit more.
My Vitamix is 14 years old! Probably time for a new one … have to take it easy on it sometimes… but currently not in the budget…

Another great smoothie that I have had before. I love blueberries and strawberries and you can even taste the spinach, though I love spinach cooked with garlic and spices. None of the fruit I use is frozen its all fresh. They say frozen is great if you can’t get it fresh, I just prefer my fruits and veggies to be fresh. This Smoothie is. already in my smoothies files. Yes I would recommend this recipe to all my friends.

Itโ€™s a winner! I shared some with my daughter and she really liked it. This one I turned into a smoothie bowlโ€ฆ still yum. I canโ€™t taste any greens.

Yummy! I really liked the berry flavor and the banana undertone. I also appreciated that it was naturally sweet without being overly sweet. Will definitely make again.

  12. This is a great smoothie. I’m not a huge fan of blueberries but you barely notice it blended with the other fruit.

  13. I love this smoothie & I do make it often. Just about any smoothie with berries is a favorite!
