Bright Berry Salad

Published on 3.3.2022 by Jen Hansard

RECIPE CARD LEAVE REVIEW
breakfast berry salad

Berries are my jam. They're antioxidant superstars and are low in sugar while totally hitting the spot when I get a sweet tooth. If you're a berry lover too then this berry salad is for you. Take a bunch of fresh seasonal berries, top them with some naturally sweet n' tangy plants and finish them off with a little crunch. Voilá! You've got a rawkstar breakfast berry fruit salad to share (or not!).

I love bringing fresh fruit to the brunch, party or dinner. This berry salad elevates the fresh fruit offering to a gorgeously yummy dish. It's super simple to make, so grab those berries and let's get started!

ingredients for berry fruit salad

Breakfast Fruit Salad Recipe

Make sure to wash and dry all the fruit before adding it to your bowl. You can either keep all the berries whole or slice the strawberries, your choice. Add a pink or yellow grapefruit that's been peeled and segmented, again keeping the slices whole or chopping them in half.

After you drizzle the orange juice and maple syrup over the fruit, very gently mix it all together. You don't want to smash the berries yet you do want to distribute the 'dressing' evenly.

I love the addition of mint yet if it's not your favorite flavor then omit it. Sprinkle the sliced almonds and your gorgeous berry salad is ready to enjoy.

Antioxidant Feast

If you aren't already convinced that berries are the best, read on:

  • The antioxidants in berries help protect your cells from free radicals.
  • Though berries are known for their sweetness, they are typically low in sugar and can help control blood sugar.
  • Berries are especially high in fiber, which many Americans are lacking.
  • Benefit from all the anti-inflammatory properties when you include berries in your diet.

Enjoy the deliciousness that comes from berries along with incredible health benefits designed to help you live your best life.

fresh fruit + mint for an easy recipe

Easy Ingredient Swaps

I chose berries that are fresh at the same time in Central Florida. Feel free to swap out any of these with berries that are local and seasonal for you. Don't forget to tag @SimpleGreenSmoothies so I can see your incredible creations!

If nut-free is what you need, then swap out the almonds with hemp hearts to keep the nutty flavor and crunch. Coconut flakes also pair well with this fruity concoction in place of almonds.

Honey can replace maple syrup, or omit altogether to keep this lower in natural sugar.

Berry Salad FAQs

How long will this berry salad stay fresh?

Try to make it and eat it the same day so all the fruit is fresh. If you wash and dry the berries well before mixing together, this salad can be made in the morning, then refrigerated until ready to enjoy.

What fruits pair well with berries?

I added grapefruit and fresh-squeezed orange juice to my bowl of berries to balance out the sweetness and add a bit more color.

Which berries are best for a berry fruit salad?

Honestly, choose local, seasonally fresh berries for your salad. These might change depending on your location and that's fine! I follow EWG's Dirty Dozen when choosing which organic produce to buy.

This is the perfect dish to bring to Sunday brunch. I try to enjoy all the fresh berries I possibly can while they're here, and this salad brings them alive.

  • ½ cup strawberries
  • ½ cup blueberries

We had this for dessert. It was delicious and liked by my family and a friend. And simple to make. We only used strawberries and raspberries though. Too cold for good blueberries or blackberries--ones I got were too bitter to eat.

Simple, flavorful salad that was easy to assemble. Had it for breakfast and it hit the spot. Especially love the inclusion of mint. I did remove the strawberry stems and sliced them since eating strawberry hulls and greens, although pretty to look at in a photo, is not ideal. A great brunch salad!

It's hard to go wrong with a berry salad. I'm only giving this 4 stars because honestly I can eat all the ingredients plain without the dressing, but it did still taste great. I made this exactly per the recipe. My 5yo loved everything but the mint(which she called lettuce) and the adults enjoyed the whole thing. We have mixed berries pretty much every weekend already so I don't see myself making this very often for the extra effort. Might be good for a picnic though, when the dressing can help coat the berries to make them stay fresh longer and you want a bit of flair with the mint. So, good recipe, but to me it's not worth the extra effort vs plain bowl of berries and a sliced grapefruit.

Yummo! This hit the spot for brunch yesterday. Only change I made was subbing orange segments for the grapefruit as I have never really cared for grapefruit. Yes, the fruit is pricy, but you gotta put it on prospective. I hate to admit I’ve paid more for a slice of carrot cake from a local restaurant than I did for this salad! And we KNOW which one is healthier 🙂

While doing the salad challenge, I'm sorry to say that I couldn't get fresh mint this week in my area. However, the salad was delicious without the mint. I know the mint will add a lovely pop of extra flavor, so I fully intend to make this again when I can get fresh mint! I loved the mix of berries and the dressing. Though simple, the dressing complemented the berry mix perfectly. I WILL be making this again!!!

This salad was simple and delicious. My husband doesn't like grapefruit so I used a couple of satsuma mandarins instead. I bought all 4 kinds of berries but it was too early in Northern California to get sweet blackberries and blueberries--the ones I bought were so bitter that I didn't put them in the salad. I just used strawberries and raspberries and fresh mint from the garden pllus the maple syrup and blood orange juice. Mmm good!

I enjoyed the fresh berry salad. For me, the mint was the frosting on the cake. I used half the amount of berries and pink grapefruit but the full amount of orange juice and maple syrup. My recipe did not include nuts but I will add sliced almonds or walnuts next time and will like it even better. I paired the salad with a hunk of egg challah to cut back the acid.

Bursting with flavour! I’ve never added grapefruit to berries but will do so from now on! Also, we usually add lemon juice to berries but by using orange juice it balanced out the acidity of the grapefruit beautifully and let the berries shine! The use of mint further elevated this berry bowl and truly made this salad sing! Will be on our regular summer salad or dessert rotation!

Bright Berry Salad was very refreshing. I think a little more orange juice or orange slices wouldn't hurt. I like the tartness of the grapefruit. I wasn't sure about the fresh mint. The small quantity was fine, but could leave it out and be ok with it. My raspberries fell apart, but that probably is a freshness issue. I would make this again.

This fruit salad has a very refreshing flavor. I would increase the maple syrup and orange juice a tiny bit, and maybe a little less mint. I chopped it and felt it overpowered at first before I actually bit into the fruit. Once the fruit started breaking down, the flavors melded well.

Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner, this Bright Berry Salad is for joy, anytime, anywhere!

I hope there is one of these popping out of my fridge every time I open the door!

(For a special kick, I added my own personal favorite: a sprinkle of freshly chopped ginger!)

I added orange slices to the berry salad. My grandkids loved the ‘juice’ at the bottom. The juice added a hint of sweetness with a mint kick. Nice alternative for dessert.

Love this. Not far from what I will usually eat full of good berries. But the added grapefruit, squeezed orange juice and honey .... Let's just say yum!

We were out and about all day,
so ate before coming home. We all had the berry salad, (minus the grapefruit we're saving for breakfast).. We put plain CocoJune yogurt on top and drizzled a little maple syrup and juice on top. The fresh mint was a good addition and the salad was such a great treat for 'dessert'! It would be good with any meal!

I couldn't get down with the grapefruit mainly because the one I bought was gross. I think the mint was ok, but there was too much. Overall, the salad was really good. I hardly ever buy black berries, but loved them in this!

Can’t ask for a better end to the day. I haven’t had grapefruit for a long time but I’ve always liked it. It adds just the right amount of tang to an otherwise sweet salad. I didn’t feel the need for the mint. This salad is a winner. It was delicious!!
