Warm Smoothie: Wassail

A classic holiday staple at our photographer Lindsey’s house is Wassail. There’s just something comforting about the mix of apples, citrus, and cranberry with spices that tastes like Christmas to her. She created a warm green smoothie based on her favorite holiday drink to share with our community.

I love Wassail so much! I can’t imagine a December without it. I love it so much I am sometimes tempted to make it all year long! I loved turning our family’s favorite holiday beverage into a warm smoothie that we could enjoy – and with added nutrients!

My kids love having a green smoothie every morning with me, but when it’s cold outside, I find they don’t slurp their smoothies down as quickly as they do in the summer. Ha! (They may also occasionally complain of an ice cream headache from slurping too fast!) This is one smoothie our whole family enjoyed sipping on together. And if you’re not a fan of warm smoothies, no worries! We tried it cold and warm and it’s great either way.

Bonus tip: you can make a few batches to keep it in the fridge for 2-3 days and warm it up as needed. It’s especially great when you’re having a hard time getting going in the morning, and breakfast is already made!

WARM WASSAIL GREEN SMOOTHIE

  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Total Time: 5 minutes

Description

The classic holiday beverage turned into a delicious, warming green smoothie full of sweet fruit flavor and comforting spices. Add some spinach to your cup of holiday cheer!


Scale

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh spinach
  • 2 cups apple juice or cider (warmed)
  • 1 apple (peeled and cored)
  • 1 orange (peeled)
  • ½ cup cranberries*
  • ½– inch piece fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • pinch ground cloves

Instructions

  1. Blend spinach and apple juice until smooth.
  2. Next add the remaining ingredients. If using a high speed blender, start blending again on low speed working up to high speed. Allow to blend for 3-5 minutes, or until very hot. If using a regular blender, blend until smooth and heat gently on the stove or transfer to mugs and heat in microwave.


Notes

*Can substitute dark sweet or tart cherries for cranberries. Notes: If using hot apple juice or cider, use caution when blending. Be sure to let the lid vent so the liquid doesn’t leak and splatter. Blend on low speed, working up to high speed until smooth. Smoothie will keep for 2-3 days in the fridge and can be made ahead and reheated before serving.

    Just when I was ready to say it was too cold for a smoothie, I found this recipe. It is genius! (And delicious!) Thanks for saving the day. And it reminded me of a cold remedy made for me by a juice bartender with steamed orange and lemon juices with ginger. I’ll add those to greens next time I’m cold.
