One of the most popular recipes is our Spinach Pineapple Smoothie, which we fondly call the Pineapple Upside Down Cake or Pineapple Dream in our smoothie recipe app, Daily Blends It’s that good!

Before you run from the sight of spinach—give this a shot…. TRUST ME! This smoothie tastes amazing and has some added health perks that you prob could enjoy.

While we love the cake this smoothies is based on, sipping on our version of the classic dessert means you’re nourishing your body with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. Psst – come closer! Can we tell you something else? We think it tastes even better than the cake!

Spinach Pineapple Smoothie

This Spinach Pineapple Smoothie is a winner for these simple reasons:

No wonder it’s such a favorite with our fellow green smoothie lovers!

Nutrients & Vitamins in Spinach Pineapple Smoothie

Did you know cherries are one of the top antioxidant-rich foods you can eat? They also contain 260 mg of potassium per one cup serving. Not to mention the calcium, Vitamin C, iron, and even protein. Pretty sweet! If you swap out sweet cherries for tart cherries, you’ll be getting even more nutritional benefits. Tart cherries are known to help with muscle recovery and soreness, and may even help you sleep better if consumed near bedtime.

Sweet Cherries

We love the frozen organic tart or sweet cherries from Costco – they’re not always available, so stock up when you find them! Check out your grocer’s freezer section when fresh cherries aren’t available. Most well-stocked markets carry frozen cherries.

Bananas

We’re bananas about all the potassium in bananas. They are a great natural sweetener and also make this smoothie extra creamy.

Spinach

Spinach is one of our favorite leafy greens to blend. Iron-rich spinach also contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B9 (folate), C, and K, as well as many minerals: manganese, magnesium, iron, copper, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, and zinc. Spinach per pound is also high in protein. So don’t be afraid to make that handful a big one!

Pineapple

Pineapple is another smoothie staple. We love that it’s available all year long and adds natural sweetness to our green smoothies. But we also love that pineapple is full of Vitamin C, dietary fiber, and bromelain, an enzyme that can naturally help eliminate abdominal bloating.

What Kind of Almond Milk Should Be Used in Smoothies?

We prefer using a high-quality, preferably organic, unsweetened almond milk. This allows us to control the amount of sugar in the smoothie and the level of sweetness.

If you have the time and resources to do so, the best option is making our DIY Almond Milk. It’s rich, creamy, and absolutely heavenly. Store-bought Almond milk contains more water per cup of almonds and often includes other additives, gums, and stabilizers. If you can’t or don’t want to tolerate any of those, making your own is the way to go.

Ingredient Substitutions for the Spinach Pineapple Smoothie

Some rawkstars in our community are allergic to certain ingredients. Common ones include bananas, nuts, coconut, pineapple, and kiwi. Or, some simply don’t care for a certain fruit. We get it! That’s why we have some substitution ides for you.

If you can’t have or don’t like almond milk…use any non-dairy milk you can tolerate. We recommend coconut or hemp milk for an ultra creamy smoothie. Learn more about the best liquid bases for smoothies here.

Pineapple can typically be swapped with other tropical fruits like mango, or stone fruit like peaches, nectarines, plums, or apricots.

Cherries can be subbed with other stone fruits or any berry that you like best.

When it comes to leafy greens, we love switching things up! Try more mild greens to allow the fruit flavors to shine through. We recommend baby kale or chard for this smoothie.

  1. Marie says:

This was my favorite smoothie so far. The flavor is fantastic. I do put in a few ice cubes to thicken all my smoothies.

  2. Jenny says:

The cherries gave it a nice twist!

  3. Susan Traub Carter says:

Pretty good taste. I did not like yesterday’s though.

  4. Cynthia says:

This is my first time trying this recipe. Delicious!!

  5. Dianna Ebright says:

Really enjoyed my Pineapple upside down smoothie. I added a handful of cilantro and some ground flax to it. After my smoothie I proceeded to make my Chia Seed Pudding for tomorrow.

  6. Helen Thadathil says:

Love that the recipe give the nutrient listing, Tasted Amazing. Only didnt look green. lol

  7. Lisa says:

Loved day one and day three. Day two was not appealing, too sour.

  8. K Bens says:

Great texture and flavor! The banana flavor was a bit stronger than I thought it would be. Will definitely make this one again!

  9. EricaRuth says:

Used slightly more pineapple and less cherries and actually really good even though I’m not a big fan of cherries

  10. Grace says:

I really enjoyed this pineapple dream smoothie. Instead of almond milk I used half the amount of water, and instead of cherries I used frozen raspberries with a few blackberries. Husband approved! To my portion I added chia seeds and pea protein powder. Very tasty!

  11. Elizabeth says:

Just made it… and delicious :o) I used water instead of the almond milk, and I added Kale to it (should have gone with Baby Kale, used what I could find at my local store). Haven’t given it to the wee one yet. Thank you again for another great recipe!

  12. Cassia Griswold-Lintz says:

This is a great smoothie — I found the main flavor was cherry. My husband enjoyed it as well saying that he tasted both the cherries and the pineapple. This is our third day of green smoothies and are so thrilled with the taste and convenience. We have ALWAYS avoided making green smoothies (thought we would only taste kale or spinach — and for us that is not very appetizing) but we are SO GLAD that we decided to take on the Green Smoothie challenge — thank you!!

  13. Margie says:

Today I made the Pineapple Dream smoothie. I used unsweetened cashew milk instead of almond milk. I lightly packed the spinach into the 1 cup measure. This time there was no bitter green taste from perhaps too much spinach (?). This has a nice blend of flavors. Next time, I might add 1 diced medjool date for some added sweetness. This one is a winner!

  14. Atlanta says:

Substituted clementine for the pineapple and added glow protein powder. Looking forward to tomorrow’s smoothie!

  15. Betty Mantell says:

This smoothie had more flavor than the two previous days. Probably because of the cherries. I won’t eat pineapple because I don’t like the texture but I am fine with it in a smoothie. I added in a few walnuts for more nutrition and fiber. Still rawking the challenge.

  16. Caroline says:

Not bad, but I felt no particular flavour was standing out.

  17. Clare S says:

This should of been yummy, however I decided to swap spinach for kale. Big mistake it made it taste awful. I still drank it though

  18. Kathy says:

My husband says this is the best one yet. Loved the taste, I used fresh banana and pineapple but froze it and then frozen tart cherries. Ik popped the frozen fruit into the microwave for about 40 seconds to slightly defrost and then into the blender. I am making these for 2 people but found that not doubling the almond milk worked better. Yesterday I used the full amount of milk for two but found it make way too much per serving.

  19. Beth says:

Hands down, this is my all-time favorite smoothie! I tend to like most Simple Green Smoothie recipes, but I don’t think any have actually blown me away quite like this one. I highly recommend it! It’s creamy and sweet and delightful.

  20. Michelle Sherwood says:

I was surprised by this smoothie as I wasn’t so sure about the combinations but it worked. So far I am really enjoying these smoothies

  21. Deborah Jacobs says:

I took this one with me to the gym with the intention of having it being a post workout refresher. It is only a 20 min drive to the gym and the smoothie did not make it there. I left a few sips for afterwards, but no, it became a pre-workout booster and not a post workout refresher. I boosted it with Hemp Hearts, which I love, for their creaminess and will eat by the spoonful. The banana came through strong, not so much the pineapple and there could be a multitude of reasons for that. I had a fresh banana and frozen pineapple, was the pineapple at it’s peak when frozen? It should have been, but I don’t know. My banana was large, perhaps I should have used less of it. I also buy vanilla flavored almond milk, but I discovered that I had purchased Sweetened in error.

  22. Christine says:

I felt that this had a odd combination of flavours. Not bad, but not my favourite.

  23. Jackie Ray says:

Used coconut milk and mixed berries. It was delicious.

  24. Karen R says:

    Day 3 Smoothie
Not to keen on this one. I think it was the cherries that made it less desirable for me. Enjoyed Day 1 & 2 smoothie better than day 3.

  25. Amelia says:

I wasn’t sure if it was the same smoothie for day 3 on the guide its called pineapple dream and on the blog its called pineapple upside down cake it was the same thing on day 2 but I looked more closely its just that the name of the smoothie is different than the guide ; it’s confusing when you have a migraine but I made it through . Yes this smoothie tastes really good I like pineapple taste in my smoothies and is delicious.

  26. Tanya says:

Really good; I upped the spinach and decreased the fruit to allow for less sugar. Not sure if it’s from this specific smoothie or because I’m on day 3 of the 10 day challenge but I will say my energy has been amazing today and stable (not a jittery or spiked energy). Feels great to feel great!

  27. Louise says:

Really like the smoothies. Really giving me energy. I also like the tips. Blending the greens with the liquids before adding the rest of the ingredients is such a great tip! Cherries are amazing!

  28. Joy says:

Didn’t have any cherries, so doubled up on the pineapple. YUM!

  29. Teresa says:

I had forgotten how yummy pineapple and cherries are in a smoothie!

  30. Carolyn says:

Colour was very green today. Again today there was no discernible fruit flavour shining through, just a sweet-ish flavour. About half-way through I could feel a gag reflex starting so I dumped it back in the Vitamix with a tablespoon of coco powder, which improved it greatly.

  31. Diana Felgenhauer says:

Had day 3 smoothie and it was good. So easy to just toss the prepared items into little baggies, into the freezer then into the Vitamix. Although I liked all 3 days of smoothies liked day 2 the best.

  32. Dora Suarez says:

I’m giving this blend a 3 mostly because of the ingredients I subbed and/or added to supplement as a meal replacement. I will provide another rating in the future when I blend as suggested. … So what didn’t I like? Since I am choosing to drink my smoothie as a lunch/meal replacement, I usually will add a protein powder, however today I opted to try the 4 tbsp of chia seeds and 2 tbsp of coconut oil suggested as meal replacement /smoothie booster combos. It didn’t work well for me. Maybe it had a bit to do with tartness of the cherries, but I also found my blend a bit oily and a tad bit coconutty for my taste. Side note, instead of plain almond milk, I’m using a coconut/almond milk blend.

    • SGS Rawkstar Jess says:

Dora, did you make 2 servings of green smoothie or 1? The 4 Tbsp of chia seeds and 2 Tbsp of coconut oil is meant for 2 servings. You will want to half that (2 Tbsp chia seeds + 1 Tbsp coconut oil) if you are only blending 1 serving. I also use and like coconut/almond milk blend.

  33. doris wiggins says:

    Made it,will drink later today.

  34. April Koebcke says:

So good not too sweet. I subbed coconut milk for almond milk.

  35. Efef Salem Wood says:

I agree it’s like having desert in a glass. Very very good!

  36. ktibet says:

    really liked this one

  37. Michelle says:

I luv, luv, luv this smoothie
Did I say “I luv this smoothie!”
I think the combo of the almond milk with pineapple and cherries is what works for me. There is a mellow sweetness that I like. I substitute the spinach with kale because I grow my own kale. And my cherries were a mix of tart and sweet. I have liked all 3 smoothies so far but this one is my favorite at the moment. Even beating out Beginner’s Luck for me

  38. Pam T says:

Tasty drink for pineapple lovers like me! The cherries added a nice level of tartness to the drink.

  39. Sandra says:

This smoothie is a bit sweeter than I prefer.

  40. Carolyn Hoffman says:

Used regular milk and kale. The pineapple balanced it out without being overly sweet and it still tasted good!

  41. Jennifer A says:

    Creamy and tropical! Liked it!

  42. Ame W says:

This one is another winner. Our almond milk is unsweetened vanilla flavored. It was delicious in this smoothie. So glad to be doing this challenge, it’s allowing my husband & I to try different combinations of fruit & greens.

  43. Cheryl P says:

This smoothie was awesome and the whole family loved it. Great flavors with just the right amount of sweetness from the banana! This is a keeper!!

  44. Steph says:

Used raspberries instead of cherries. My daughter loved hers. Son and I will do ours tonight. We may replace almond milk with coconut water.

  45. Christine says:

Day 3! Unfortunately, haven’t been able to find the cherries so I had to go with mango this morning instead. We will keep trying to find the cherries, fresh or frozen. The smoothie was delicious and I am really liking the almond milk which I did not think I would! My husband drank his this morning and I made one for each of my kids and put in the fridge for their after school snack. Yum!

  46. Kimberly Watt says:

Delicious Smoothie… I didn’t have cherries so substitute Strawberries! VeryGood as well!:)

  47. JJ says:

    Love it!

  48. Bobbie says:

    So far my favorite.

  49. Jo says:

This recipe was good whereas day one and two were great. I think the banana toned down the pineapple just a little to much but nonetheless still a drink I will make again. thanks

  50. JONI W says:

I wish I could give this more than 5 stars because it exceeded my expectations. It’s my favorite thus far.

  51. Angeline says:

So good this is my new favorite drink. I swapped cherry to blueberry and I used almond milk with toasted coconut and it was a little think so I used water to thin it out. So good

  52. Sheri says:

This is one of my all time favorites! Sometimes I’ll add 1T of cocoa powder. Today I was out of bananas (kids got to them) so I subbed avocado, still great!

  53. Hilgay says:

This pineapple upside down cake smoothie is really delicious, I love the taste of the pineapple . I added kale with the spinach. I’ve had previous allergic reactions to cherries, so swapped it out with a blueberry, raspberry and açai berry mix. Really nice boost. Both my daughter and I prefer the taste of coconut so I used unsweetened instead of almond milk. Oh, I also added half an avocado.

  54. Nichole says:

    Yum! Loved this one.

  55. Joy says:

I rated this as a 3 because it got stuck like a solid lump in the blender and I had to add more liquid. This made the smoothie quite bland and watery. However my husband thought it was a good one.
Each day as I make a smoothie I see many people adding and changing some of the ingredients to make it more creamy. Moving forward I will try different things.
This is my first time making smoothies and on the whole enjoying the process, I’m so happy I was able to sign up for this challenge……

P.s. I’m away from home and purchased a not so good blender so I could start the challenge. I have a Vitamix at home and I think the results will be much better when I get home!

  56. Jen C. says:

The recipe I made is called Pineapple Dream, same ingredients. It’s so delicious and refreshing. Don’t know how you do it Jen. The smoothies are so delicious and I didn’t have to add sweetners to any of them which I normally do when I make smoothies.

  57. Jen Hart says:

Literally anything with pineapple is a dream! Don’t let pineapple and almond milk which sounds different than usual deter you from trying this! Trust the recipe!

  58. Lori says:

This smoothie has all the right stuff. Almond milk for creaminess, pineapple for sweetness, cherries to fight inflammation and, of course, those healthy greens!

  59. Julie says:

    Another yummy smoothie!

  60. Lisa says:

I really like the pineapple! Nice and creamy with the right amount of sweetness

  61. Lisa L says:

I liked this recipe because it was creamy and smooth. Mine very much just tasted like a banana. I will say that I put a whole banana in mine because a) my banana was small, and b) what am I going to do with half a banana? I think next time I’m going to up the amounts of cherry and pineapple because I would like to taste more of them.

  62. Ashley Smith says:

Although I liked this smoothie, I must say I preferred the one I made for my husband. He doesn’t care for almond milk, so I subbed oat milk and it tasted much more fruity! I may sub oat milk more often!

  63. Diana says:

I don’t eat pineapple or have cherries so I used a tangelo from our tree and some raspberries & strawberries. Added some chia seeds, collagen powder, protein powder and 1/2 an avacado. I also used 1/2 water and 1/2 unsweetened Cashew milk so it wasn’t as heavy in my stomach.
It was okay…good but not great.

  64. Susan says:

Yummy! My husband and I both enjoyed the spinach pineapple smoothie today !

  65. Lindy Lincicome says:

Didn’t have cherries avail so I just left them out which is probably why there wasn’t much flavor but still good.

  66. Sylvia Pedlar says:

Rich and creamy withtge almond milk and banana.

  67. Annette says:

Love the pineapple smoothie. Definitely rich and creamy, though I tasted more banana than pineapple. I think next time I’ll add more pineapple and less banana.

  68. Nelleke Beats says:

I absolutely loved this one. Made day before and stored overnight. Great dessert like flavor.

  69. Karen M-A says:

Unable to eat pineapple, so started out this challenge freestyling. Will get the week 2 list and start following along. Long time Rawkstar….love my Green Smoothies! Thanks, Jen and team.

  70. Mary says:

One of my favorites because anything with cherries and pineapples, yum.

  71. Kathy says:

Day #3 smoothie seemed richer or thicker . I used half kale and half spinach and 1 tablespoon of chia seeds. Not bad , filling .

  72. Mary-Walker says:

This is one of my favorite smoothies so far! I have A banana allergy so I substituted 1/2 cup avocado and a date for the banana. Delicious!

  73. Ann says:

Very easy to drink. For me it could have had more of a flavor punch. But it was delicious anyway. I love pineapple and cherries !!❤

  74. Karen says:

    Love it!

  75. Chris Miller says:

    Very creamy goodness!

  76. Peggy says:

Didn’t care for the banana cherry flavour of this one! 2/3 home runs to date though!

  77. Tiffany Weber says:

Love this one! I love the colour (mine turned out very pink, unavoidable with adding cherries) The taste is really good too but that may be because pineapple is one of my favourite fruits. I will definitely make this again!

  78. Cynthia says:

    Very tasty.

  79. Linda says:

This smoothie is delicious and very satisfying. We love all the smoothies in the recipe book but this is one of our favorites.

  80. Sarah says:

My son and I LOVED this smoothie! It is rich, creamy, and delicious! I like the tropical taste – the best taste for a smoothie, in my opinion! My son said, “Mom, rate it and say it’s the best smoothie ever!” We didn’t have quite enough spinach to complete the recipe, so we threw some kale in there, too. Today’s smoothie is a winner!

  81. Debi says:

We loved this recipe!!! It is a keeper

  82. Amy Robinson says:

I didn’t have the cherries; I used strawberries instead, and a 1/4 c oj with water instead of almond milk, so I don’t feel I can honestly rate this one. I will try the real smoothie recipe another day. I’m going to try and get some frozen cherries today when I shop for other ingredients.

  83. sarah says:

This one was a hit by the whole family!

  84. Susie Chamberlain says:

This smoothie is a great one to start the day!

  85. Tina Migielicz says:

This is one of my go to green smoothies! I love every ingredient and they blend together perfectly.

  86. Cindy A says:

Delicious taste. Color not so appetizing.

  87. Shawn says:

Today’s smoothie did taste like dessert which is probably why I loved it so much. This one is definitely a keeper!

  88. Margaret Eacker says:

Very good and filling. the banana overpowers everything and is all I can taste. When I make this again I’m using avocado in place of the banana.

  89. LeeAnn says:

This was really good, I have to substitute cherrys because of an allergy so I used 1/2 cup mixed strawberries and cranberries.

  90. Deb says:

Another great tasting smoothy! I never thought of putting cherries with pineapple. Yum!

  91. Cindy says:

I loved the favors! I added a scoop of protein powder. Yes, the color is not pretty but sometimes we are surprised with taste!

  92. Connie says:

It was quite good! Just wish I was ins sunny warm climate drinking it.

  93. Connie says:

    Yummy

  94. Sue says:

I like this smoothie, but day one is still my favorite. I put today’s in fun mini mug jug looking container with a straw. I’ll post it on Facebook later today or tomorrow.

  95. Susan Charboneau says:

I added a little kale protein powder and it came out a little thick so I added a little more almond milk it was great

  96. AZ Sue says:

This one is pretty sweet, but again, I changed out the spinach for Kale and I don’t like cherries, so I used strawberries. All my fruit is frozen so it makes a nice frothy cool drink. I’m enjoying the variety in my drinks.

  97. Marguerite C says:

DElLICIOUS!!! I don’t like ‘milk’ or yogurt in my smoothies as it takes away from the fresh taste of fruits & greens, so I used water instead of almond milk.

  98. Heather says:

Swapped out the cherries for blueberries and it worked out really good 🙂

  99. Diana H says:

This is a tough one for me. It didn’t taste bad, but it came across as REALLY sweet. I’m used to Kimberly Snyder’s Glowing Green Smoothies which have more veggies. I have concerns that these smoothies have more fruit and therefore more natural sugars. I made a second batch with avocado for the kids, because they don’t like bananas, but the flavor combo doesn’t work.

  100. Greg says:

Day 3 smoothie is another good one! Very tasty. I added an apple and some turmeric and flax/chia/hemp seed mix.
