What should I eat while drinking green smoothies?

Question: Am I supposed to just drink green smoothies the rest of my life?
Answer: No way!

Whether you are doing a 30-Day Green Smoothie Challenge or not, the goal is never to only drink green smoothies—we want you to eat normal meals, too! Having one green smoothie a day without even changing your regular diet moves you in the right direction towards healthy eating. That’s what the green smoothie lifestyle is all about!

However, if you’re looking for a little more guidance when it comes to what else you should be eating while you’re gulping the greens, we suggest you eat real food that is free of processed sugars and ingredients.

A general rule for us: “If you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it.”

We love replacing one meal a day with a green smoothie or having it as a snack, but you can bump it up to two meal replacements if you’d like! When drinking a green smoothie as a meal replacement, make sure to add a protein boost (plant-based protein powder, nut milk, nut butter) and healthy fats (avocado, coconut oil) to complete your meal. Or, you can snack on some nuts or a hard-boiled egg 30-60 minutes after you drink your green smoothie. This will keep you satisfied throughout the day.

What if I want to take healthy eating to the next level?

“I feel soooo good! I have way more energy, I’ve lost 7 pounds, I sleep through the night and wake up refreshed and clearheaded. I have an entirely new relationship with food.” — Raven

“I feel more energized and cleaner in the sense that I don’t feel bloated and heavy. I feel fresh from the inside out.” — Ariel

Hi I have been doing my own green smoothie challenge for the past 5 weeks. I have a smoothie as my breakfast and I love the way I feel. I use to drink 5 or more cups of coffee through out day, to keep up with my twin 3 year olds. I now only want to drink 1 -2 cups and have so much energy. I love the way I feel!! Erin

    • Jadah and Jen 3.7.2014 at 12:02 pm #

So great, Erin! Glad to have you as a part of our rawkin’ community!

Hi I’m so excited to start the challenge.. Just wanted to ask is it okay if I have a green smoothie instead of dinner?

  8. Ivy 2.21.2014 at 10:03 am #

Hi! I just signed up for the 30 day Green Smoothie challenge, and I am very excited about it! I just have one question though about having the green smoothie as replacement on your 1 regular meal, how many calories are in each recipe? for example in the beginner’s luck recipe? Thank you.

    Ivy

    • Jadah and Jen 2.24.2014 at 12:44 pm #

      Hi Ivy!
We have not calculated calories for any of our recipes. We recommend using “Lose It” or “My Fitness Pal” to count nutritional info in our recipes (both are websites and phone apps)!

  9. Rosie 2.6.2014 at 8:26 am #

Hi I just started the challenge and would like to know how many meals should I be eating if I want to replace two meals a day.

    thank you
    Rosie

    • Jadah and Jen 2.7.2014 at 8:44 am #

      Hi Rosie!
Eat however many meals is normal, and count the green smoothies as a meal :-) If you have a green smoothie for breakfast and lunch, and you normally eat a dinner, too, then go ahead and eat a dinner!

  10. Kath 1.28.2014 at 10:21 pm #

Hi, today is the 29/1/2014 and I have just joined the 30 day challenge, and a couple of hours ago I received week 5, of January, Do I still get weeks 1-4 in February?

    • Jadah and Jen 2.3.2014 at 11:58 am #

      Hi Kath!
Since this is a live challenge you only receive the week for which you signed up for and the following weeks. You will be all signed up for the next challenge in April, though!

  11. Rachel 1.23.2014 at 11:15 am #

Good afternoon girls! I signed up for the green smoothie challenge, then showed my 15 year old the recipes. She took one look at the page, said, “uh, lettuce (it was kale but why split hairs?)..in a smoothie? Mom, eww. Not gonna happen….” So, we negotiated. The 31 day challenge will be a more like 90, but at least we are having a smoothie a day now. We started off with the more “standard” smoothie types. I am a firm believer that baby steps (and good negotiation skills when you’re talking teenager) work, and I’ve got her involved in the process so we’re on our way, with the toast to “stronger, healthier, thinner” with each smoothie, we’re on our way to making that reality. Thank you for the recipes, the information, and all the support!

  12. Tracy 1.23.2014 at 7:21 am #

Regarding blending you greens and placing in ice cube trays. The ice cubes work well, however your greens will freeze great as is! Especially if I bought more greens than could be used in one week. Just place 2 cups of greens per sandwich bag and place in the freezer. For me, it’s a lot faster and easier. Thanks for all the wonderful smoothie recipes, we love them!!!

    • Jadah and Jen 1.23.2014 at 6:13 pm #

Awesome tip, Tracy! We are so glad you are enjoying the recipes! :)

  13. Jessica 1.19.2014 at 8:33 pm #

How much nuts should we eat 30-60 minutes after our smoothies

    • Jadah and Jen 1.20.2014 at 8:18 am #

A handful is fine, Jessica :-)

    • crystal Smith 3.20.2014 at 4:33 pm #

Jessica, Put a handful of nuts in the smoothie! and flax or Chia seeds!
      Its all good!

  14. Alyssa 1.10.2014 at 7:48 am #

I am about to start the 30 day challenge. Will there be a significant notice of weight loss? I assume a positive diet change will show something but give or take quickly or slowly? thanks!

    • Alyssa 1.10.2014 at 7:52 am #

Also, what are some things to add to the smoothies to make them more of a meal replacement if I were to substitute 2 meals of a day with smoothies? based on my reading, it looks like the hemp will help with that. I was also thinking maybe some no flavor greek yogart or even quick cook oats ground down to powder form. let me know your thoughts!

    • Jadah and Jen 1.10.2014 at 9:57 am #

      Hi Alyssa!
Green smoothies aren’t meant for quick and huge weight loss, but more gradual and permanent lifestyle change :-) For many people, this causes them to lose between 1-10 pounds simply be drinking a green smoothie in place of one other meal. If you’ve never had a green smoothie before, we’d recommend you start there!

Here is an article on protein that should help give your smoothies more substance if you notice that they aren’t helping you last until your next meal or planned snack!

Hi! I started that 30 day challenge and am loving it..I am trying to lose weight and yeah the amount of calorirs consumed each day. Is there an easy way to determine how many calories are in each 16oz smoothie I drink?

    • Jadah and Jen 1.8.2014 at 7:57 am #

      Hi Jae!
For nutritional content, we like to recommend these websites and/or phone apps :-)

    Hi Ladies,

Just signed up last night to start the 30 day challenge. I plan on substituting 2 meals a day with a delicious green smoothies. I actually had 3 green smoothies today but had a salad with my evening smoothie. Thanks for this challenge I look forward to reaping the benefits of a healthier eating lifestyle! I hope to get the rest of my family on board too.

    • Jadah and Jen 1.7.2014 at 7:42 am #

Welcome to the challenge! Hope your family joins you, too, at least for some of it :-)

  17. Pam 1.5.2014 at 5:38 pm #

I LOVE the green smoothie challenge! I started on Dec 30 and since then I have felt energized and no longer crave my daily cup of coffee and I can keep up with my very active 3 year old! Thank you Jen and Jadah – rawk-on!

  18. Sheri 1.5.2014 at 8:37 am #

I’m just getting ready to start the challenge. I was reading over the recipes. What is the purpose of the cacao in some of the recipes? Is it for flavor or is there a nutritional purpose? Can carob be substituted for cacao? I use carob powder in other recipes and prefer it.

    • Jadah and Jen 1.6.2014 at 11:10 am #

Hi Sheri! Cacao has a chocolately flavor and lots of antioxidants—two of the reasons we love using it! Unsweetened cocoa can work in its place :-)

  19. Sherisse 1.4.2014 at 10:44 am #

started the challenge and i am so excited :D thank you so much

  20. Ayeshia 1.4.2014 at 8:16 am #

My husband and I have started the 30 day challenge and are so excited . The smoothies are great and filling when you add the chia to it. Thank you for the site and the encouragement to the beginners.

I have a food allergy to tree nuts, so I can’t eat almonds (raw, butter, or milk). Can you recommend appropriate and good tasting substitutes for each in your recipes? For example, can I use rice milk as a replacement for almond milk (it’s what I usually do)?

You can totally make substitutions, Gloria. Rice, hemp, coconut, coconut water, water or orange juice are good subs. :)

I read a comment someplace on your website about blending the greens ahead of time and freezing them in cubes to save some time. I can’t find this comment now and I forget ezpxactly what the person suggested. Does this ring a bell for you? Can you help me with this. Thanks

    • Jadah and Jen 1.1.2014 at 9:38 am #

      Hi Sharon!
We shared something about that on our Facebook, but we don’t have an article on it for our website. We don’t really do it, but thought others might find it helpful.

The tip was the blend the leafy greens with just a bit of water, put the blended greens in ice cube trays, and throw in some cubes when blending your smoothie. You can add just a tiny bit of coconut oil or even some lemon/lime to help preserve the greens!

      • Martha 1.10.2014 at 4:44 am #

I blended and froze my kale and spinach. Great idea, making smoothies is alot easier and quicker. One question… when the recipe asks for 2 cups of kale or spinach, how many cubes would that be?

      • Tracy 1.23.2014 at 7:23 am #

Spinach and Kale freeze well. Just divide into 2 cup measurements and place in sandwich bags. ;)

  26. Lor 12.31.2013 at 12:47 am #

    Hi!
I was wondering, if I’m trying to shed some pounds and I am having a green smoothie; would it be OK if I have another one for dinner? What can I add that is weight-loss friendly, to make them a complete meal?

    • Jadah and Jen 12.31.2013 at 6:27 am #

      Hi Lor!
Sure, you can have one at dinner-time, too :-) If you’re using them as meal replacements, then you won’t have to spend a lot of effort trying to think of ingredients that will help you lose weight. All the green smoothies have whole fruits, leafy greens, healthy liquids, etc., so they’ll be what you need :-)

    • Megan 1.16.2014 at 9:57 pm #

A simple green smoothie with greens and fruit is not an adequate meal replacement, you also need to ingest healthy fats and protein.

  27. Jen 12.29.2013 at 12:49 am #

    Hi ladies,

I signed up for the 30 day green smoothie challenge. I look forward to getting started, I just went out and got all the fruit and veg.. Great way for me to get back on track after the festive season.

I just had twins on December 17 and am breastfeeding. I am interested in the 30 day challenge but want to make sure I am getting enough calories and nutrients to sustain my supply.

    • Jadah and Jen 12.28.2013 at 12:14 pm #

      Hi Melissa!
Keep in mind that we are just asking you to drink one green smoothie a day for 30 days, and you can eat whatever else you need to eat the rest of the day. So, you should be getting enough nutrients as long as you eating good foods for you and your baby :-)

Check out this article. It mainly talks about pregnancy, but all the same info applies to breastfeeding, too:
