Avocado Banana Smoothie Ingredients

  • Water is a simple, underrated smoothie base. It keeps the flavor clean, light, and refreshing without overpowering the fruit.
  • Avocado adds healthy fats that boost creaminess, help you stay full, and improve vitamin absorption.
  • Banana brings natural sweetness and smooth texture that balances the greens.
  • Mango adds extra creaminess, masks any “green” taste, and delivers vitamins A and C.
  • Protein powder: Adding about 20 grams of unflavored, unsweetened protein powder balances the fats from avocado and carbs from fruit. It helps keep you full, supports muscle recovery, and lets the smoothie’s natural flavors shine without added sugars or fillers.

Expert Tips

We used water as our liquid base to keep the calories down, yet you can use almond milk, oat milk or even coconut water with this avocado smoothie recipe.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Add water and spinach to a blender and blend on high until completely smooth. This helps break down the greens for a creamy base.
  2. Add avocado, frozen mango, and banana, then blend again until thick and creamy.
  3. Adjust with more water if needed, taste, and add a squeeze of lemon or lime if desired.
  4. Add in protein powder and blend on low until thick and creamy to minimize aeration
  5. Pour and enjoy right away for the best flavor and texture.

Ingredient Swaps

Here’s a few suggestions to help you swap ingredients based on what you have on hand.

  • Sweetness: Mango or pear (instead of banana).
  • Creaminess/Protein: Greek yogurt.
  • Avocado Replacement: Cashews or coconut cream.
  • Mango Alternatives: Pineapple, peach, or berries (strawberries or blueberries)

Smoothie Add-Ins

Feel free to experiment by adding other ingredients to this smoothie. Here’s a few I would suggest trying with this avocado banana smoothie recipe:

  1. Chia seeds: A tablespoon or two adds a boost of fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein. They have a mild flavor and thicken the smoothie slightly.
  2. Kale: Don’t be afraid to add more greens! Kale is a nutritional powerhouse with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium and antioxidants.
  3. Ginger: A small piece of fresh ginger adds a zesty kick and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Common Questions

My smoothie is too thick. How can I thin it out?

Add more liquid, such as water, milk (dairy or non-dairy), or juice, a little at a time, and blend again until you reach your desired consistency.

Can I use a ripe but not-quite-perfect avocado?

Yes, as long as the avocado isn’t overly brown or mushy. A slightly soft avocado is fine for blending.

Can I substitute the banana with something else?

While the banana contributes sweetness and creaminess, you could try using mango, pear, or even a bit of honey or maple syrup for sweetness. The texture might be slightly different.

Can I use frozen avocado?

Yes, frozen avocado chunks are available and work well in smoothies. They also help make the smoothie colder and thicker.

Is avocado and banana smoothie good for you?

Yes! The bananas and avocados lend a creaminess to the whole smoothie while boosting the fiber and adding some natural sweetness for a quick energy boost. Avocados are rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, reducing cardiovascular disease risk. They’re also rich in potassium, essential for balancing blood pressure.

Do banana and avocado taste good together?

They sure do. Bananas and avocados blend into a creamy, subtly sweet mix, ideal for smoothies. The banana’s sweetness masks the avocado’s mild flavor, creating a delicious and nutritious combination.

Wow! This was a lot thicker and creamier than I thought it would be. I used pineapple instead of mango, tasted great!

Sadly this smoothie wasn’t what I hope it would be. Yes it was very creamy but it also lacked flavor. It ended up taking more like spinach water than anything else. Even with the addition of mango, banana, and avocado.

Sadly this smoothie was not what I hoped for it to be. It lacked flavor and ended up tasting more like spinach water than anything else even with the banana and magno.

Delicious smoothie. The banana comes through very well. It could probably double as a base for some cacao powder. 🙂

Kept me full after my workout. Next time I would use more mango for more fruity flavor I think!

I’m new to smoothies and loving the fact that I can get all my vitamins from the fruits and vegetables by just drinking delicious smoothies – this one’s pretty good.
It’s a very creamy smoothie, very mild tastes but goes down good!

    1. Hey Denise! Yes! We love smoothies for that reason! Before I started drinking smoothies, I swear I never ate fruit, so I love knowing that I’m getting all of my daily servings in a way that I enjoy. Keep it up – you RAWK!

I have made LOTS of your smoothies- this one is not my favorite….maybe needed a bit more mango or my banana was not ripe enough. I know it’s got lots of good stuff in it, so definitely finished it

We liked this smoothie. I made two small changes–I subbed coconut water for the water, and I added a scoop of protein powder. Tasty!

I don’t like avocados but this recipe wasn’t bad. My husband even drank one and he doesn’t like too many things that are good for you.

    1. Hey Deborah – I’m so happy that you both gave it a shot! We like to make healthy foods taste delicious! Can’t wait to see what you both think of the remaining 9 smoothies from the Summer Smoothie Challenge!

This was a very smooth drink. I added vegan protein powder because I am using it as a meal substitute. I found it not sweet, not sour, not salty, just pleasant and smooth. Was definitely filling. As I am calorie counting and noting protein, carbs, fiber, fat, I wish you would provide all of these elements. Thank you so much!

I enjoy adding avocado because it makes the smoothie so much creamier! Trying to cut carbs so kept the fruit to a minimum and added the greens. I bet adding the protein powder will make it a little sweeter?! Really enjoyed it and like the simplicity!! Thank you for the interesting combination!
