Avocado Banana Smoothie Ingredients

  • Water is a simple, underrated smoothie base. It keeps the flavor clean, light, and refreshing without overpowering the fruit.
  • Avocado adds healthy fats that boost creaminess, helps you stay full, and improves vitamin absorption. Cut avocado like a pro with my guide.
  • Banana brings natural sweetness and smooth texture that balances the greens. If you like thick smoothies, you can freeze bananas ahead of time.
  • Mango adds extra creaminess, masks any “green” taste, and delivers vitamins A and C. For quick prep, check out my guide on how to cut mango.
  • Protein powder: Adding about 20 grams of unflavored, homemade protein powder balances the fats from avocado and carbs from fruit. It helps keep you full, supports muscle recovery, and lets the smoothie’s natural flavors shine without added sugars or fillers.

How to Make Avocado Banana Smoothie

  1. Add water and spinach to a blender and blend on high until completely smooth. This helps break down the greens for a creamy base.
  2. Add avocado, frozen mango, and banana, then blend again until thick and creamy.
  3. Adjust with more water if needed, taste, and add a squeeze of lemon or lime if desired.
  4. Add in protein powder and blend on low until thick and creamy to minimize aeration.
  5. Pour and enjoy right away for the best flavor and texture.

Avocado Banana Smoothie Ingredient Swaps

Here’s a few suggestions to help you swap ingredients based on what you have on hand.

  • Sweetness: Mango or pear (instead of banana).
  • Creaminess/Protein: Greek yogurt.
  • Avocado Replacement: Cashew or coconut cream.
  • Mango Alternatives: Pineapple, peach, or berries (strawberries or blueberries)

Smoothie Add-Ins

Feel free to experiment by adding other ingredients to this smoothie. Here’s a few I would suggest trying with this avocado banana smoothie recipe:

  1. Chia seeds: A tablespoon or two adds a boost of fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein. They have a mild flavor and thicken the smoothie slightly.
  2. Kale: Don’t be afraid to add more greens! Kale is a nutritional powerhouse with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium and antioxidants. You can also check out my guide on learn how to freeze kale.
  3. Ginger: A small piece of fresh ginger adds a zesty kick and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Common Questions

My smoothie is too thick. How can I thin it out?

Add more liquid, such as water, milk (dairy or non-dairy), or juice, a little at a time, and blend again until you reach your desired consistency.

Can I use a ripe but not-quite-perfect avocado?

Yes, as long as the avocado isn’t overly brown or mushy. A slightly soft avocado is fine for blending.

Can I substitute the banana with something else?

While the banana contributes sweetness and creaminess, you could try using mango, pear, or even a bit of honey or maple syrup for sweetness. The texture might be slightly different.

Can I use frozen avocado?

Yes, frozen avocado chunks are available and work well in smoothies. They also help make the smoothie colder and thicker. For busy mornings, you can include them in frozen meal prep smoothie packs so you always have ready-to-blend ingredients on hand.

Is avocado and banana smoothie good for you?

Yes! The bananas and avocados lend a creaminess to the whole smoothie while boosting the fiber and adding some natural sweetness for a quick energy boost. Avocados are rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, reducing cardiovascular disease risk. They’re also rich in potassium, essential for balancing blood pressure.

Do banana and avocado taste good together?

They sure do. Bananas and avocados blend into a creamy, subtly sweet mix, ideal for smoothies. The banana’s sweetness masks the avocado’s mild flavor, creating a delicious and nutritious combination.

Not super sweet, which I liked. Wad a bit thick I added a bit more water..

  2. I am not usually a fan of avocado in my smoothies; this was better than I had aniticpated.

  3. Until this morning I abhorred avocados. Now, I must say, I will only ever have avocados in this delicious smoothie, which is probably one of the best smoothie recipes I have ever made! Mind blowwwnnnnnn!

This is a winner for me. I’m all about the simple smoothie. This one is simple and deliciously creamy.

Enjoyed this smoothie! Had one (rotten) avocado left, but another quarter of a good one. So mad since avocados are so expensive these days. But the piece was on the larger side, so it still worked. I added some hemp seeds to get a little more healthy fat. Also added a scoop of vanilla protein powder. Very satisfying smoothie!

I liked it but here’s the thing. I love bananas and avocados but avocados are like the opposite of bananas because they are only good (ripe) for about five minutes! So as much as I like this and I like avocados, I’m not sure how often I’ll be able to have this…

  7. We loved this smoothie. It was very filling and I was surprised by the flavor profile. I was almost afraid the avocado would over power the smoothie but it was very well balanced.

This smoothie fell flat for me. Not very flavorful…even after adding 2 tbsp. peanut butter powder…and way too thick…even after adding an additional 1/2 cup of water. Disappointing and a waste of good ingredients. 🙁

This smoothie fell flat for me. Even after adding 1/2 c. additional water and 2 tbsp. peanut butter powder, it was way too thick and lacking flavor. Disappointing and a waste of good ingredients.

Strawberries are in season and I don’t have any avocado so I substituted strawberries for avocado. Lately I’ve been getting leg cramps and I’m hoping the potassium and other nutrients from the banana and nut will help with this problem.

Delicious! I loved the smooth consistency and sweet taste from the avocado and mango.

We liked it. Used fresh not frozen fruits. Unfortunately, our mango was not ripe enough. That would have made it a lot better.

This was so good! The avocado made it creamy and the spinach was barely noticeable! Tasty!!

I made for two and we liked it. Very smooth and not too sweet. I added about 1/4 c. Ground flax in a double batch.

The smoothie is truly excellent just too many carbs and sugars for this type II diabetic. Only drank half of it to cut back on the carbs/sugars.
