Avocado Banana Smoothie Ingredients
- Water is a simple, underrated smoothie base. It keeps the flavor clean, light, and refreshing without overpowering the fruit.
- Avocado adds healthy fats that boost creaminess, help you stay full, and improve vitamin absorption.
- Banana brings natural sweetness and smooth texture that balances the greens.
- Mango adds extra creaminess, masks any “green” taste, and delivers vitamins A and C.
- Protein powder: Adding about 20 grams of unflavored, unsweetened protein powder balances the fats from avocado and carbs from fruit. It helps keep you full, supports muscle recovery, and lets the smoothie’s natural flavors shine without added sugars or fillers.
Expert Tips
We used water as our liquid base to keep the calories down, yet you can use almond milk, oat milk or even coconut water with this avocado smoothie recipe.

Step-by-Step Instructions
- Add water and spinach to a blender and blend on high until completely smooth. This helps break down the greens for a creamy base.
- Add avocado, frozen mango, and banana, then blend again until thick and creamy.
- Adjust with more water if needed, taste, and add a squeeze of lemon or lime if desired.
- Add in protein powder and blend on low until thick and creamy to minimize aeration
- Pour and enjoy right away for the best flavor and texture.

Ingredient Swaps
Here’s a few suggestions to help you swap ingredients based on what you have on hand.
- Sweetness: Mango or pear (instead of banana).
- Creaminess/Protein: Greek yogurt.
- Avocado Replacement: Cashews or coconut cream.
- Mango Alternatives: Pineapple, peach, or berries (strawberries or blueberries)

Smoothie Add-Ins
Feel free to experiment by adding other ingredients to this smoothie. Here’s a few I would suggest trying with this avocado banana smoothie recipe:
- Chia seeds: A tablespoon or two adds a boost of fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein. They have a mild flavor and thicken the smoothie slightly.
- Kale: Don’t be afraid to add more greens! Kale is a nutritional powerhouse with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium and antioxidants.
- Ginger: A small piece of fresh ginger adds a zesty kick and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Add more liquid, such as water, milk (dairy or non-dairy), or juice, a little at a time, and blend again until you reach your desired consistency.
Yes, as long as the avocado isn’t overly brown or mushy. A slightly soft avocado is fine for blending.
While the banana contributes sweetness and creaminess, you could try using mango, pear, or even a bit of honey or maple syrup for sweetness. The texture might be slightly different.
Yes, frozen avocado chunks are available and work well in smoothies. They also help make the smoothie colder and thicker.
Yes! The bananas and avocados lend a creaminess to the whole smoothie while boosting the fiber and adding some natural sweetness for a quick energy boost. Avocados are rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, reducing cardiovascular disease risk. They’re also rich in potassium, essential for balancing blood pressure.
They sure do. Bananas and avocados blend into a creamy, subtly sweet mix, ideal for smoothies. The banana’s sweetness masks the avocado’s mild flavor, creating a delicious and nutritious combination.

Very creamy and yummy. It was very filling and held me until lunch. I would have preferred a cooler smoothie.
Very yummy! I used less avocado and a bit more mango:)
Great recipe, and because I had a container of Organic Girl Super Greens, I used that instead of spinach (spinach is in there but just some others as well) The banana made it really sweet! Loved it
Creamy and not too sweet – good one! I didn’t have the Protein Boost Powder thanks n hand but would sure like to try it with that added.
Hi Jill – homemade protein powder is a great addition to any and all smoothies! I hope you’ll give it a shot! https://simplegreensmoothies.com/homemade-protein-powder
I made this smoothie. I left out protein powder. Probably sweeter if I added it
My regular smoothies have always consisted of spinach, bananas and protein powder, but adding the avocado as a healthy fat made me feel fuller until lunch time and the mango was a nice compliment to give it a tropical taste. The avocado and mango also gave it a creamier texture. In the future, I will try less water and turn it into a smoothie bowl as the flavour combination was delicious.
The banana and avocado make this smoothie extremely creamy! The spinach adds a wonderful color and nutrients. Overall, this is a well-balanced nutrient-packed smoothie. It could use something a bit acidic such as lime.
Very creamy with just the right sweetness.
I really like this smoothie… never tried avocado in a smoothie before and it adds creaminess… !!!! I follow the instructions using my Vitamix. I used the frozen mangos and cold water but my other ingredients were at room temp. I just felt it was not as cold as I like.. I was tempted to add ice but didn’t want to make it watery… but still love the flavor.
Hi Merary – to make your smoothies colder, you can add some ice. Plus, I always recommend using as many frozen fruits as you can!
My family and I tried today’s smoothie challenge. We would like to have more mango added. We use bananas in other smoothies, but the banana taste was a little over powering. It was not cold enough for me. I would suggest ice in place of the liquid water. The other ingredients are ok. These are our thoughts on today’s challenge. Thank you.
Hey Regina – I always recommend using as many frozen ingredients in smoothies as you can. You can buy frozen mango chunks and I always suggest freezing some bananas, especially if you have some super ripe fresh ones – these are perfect bananas to freeze and add to future smoothies! Keep on rawkin’ this challenge!
This was the perfect smoothie!
I doubled this for lunch! Nice and smooth and a “heavier” smoothie that is filling and tasty! I didn’t think it needed any changes but I did add the vegan protein powder for extra protein before my workout! Loved it!
I added coconut water instead of plain water. The combination of the coconut water, mango and banana made it taste tropical. It was a good change up, but I do prefer smoothies with berries.
Kids like it. It’s a win!!!
Great texture. Enough other flavors to cover the banana which I don’t love but works here! And like others here, I do find when I start the day with a healthy smoothie, I eat better all day long.
Enjoyed the creamy texture but I don’t think my Avocado was ripe enough!
