Avocado Banana Smoothie Ingredients

  • Water is a simple, underrated smoothie base. It keeps the flavor clean, light, and refreshing without overpowering the fruit.
  • Avocado adds healthy fats that boost creaminess, help you stay full, and improve vitamin absorption.
  • Banana brings natural sweetness and smooth texture that balances the greens.
  • Mango adds extra creaminess, masks any “green” taste, and delivers vitamins A and C.
  • Protein powder: Adding about 20 grams of unflavored, unsweetened protein powder balances the fats from avocado and carbs from fruit. It helps keep you full, supports muscle recovery, and lets the smoothie’s natural flavors shine without added sugars or fillers.

Expert Tips

We used water as our liquid base to keep the calories down, yet you can use almond milk, oat milk or even coconut water with this avocado smoothie recipe.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Add water and spinach to a blender and blend on high until completely smooth. This helps break down the greens for a creamy base.
  2. Add avocado, frozen mango, and banana, then blend again until thick and creamy.
  3. Adjust with more water if needed, taste, and add a squeeze of lemon or lime if desired.
  4. Add in protein powder and blend on low until thick and creamy to minimize aeration
  5. Pour and enjoy right away for the best flavor and texture.

Ingredient Swaps

Here’s a few suggestions to help you swap ingredients based on what you have on hand.

  • Sweetness: Mango or pear (instead of banana).
  • Creaminess/Protein: Greek yogurt.
  • Avocado Replacement: Cashews or coconut cream.
  • Mango Alternatives: Pineapple, peach, or berries (strawberries or blueberries)

Smoothie Add-Ins

Feel free to experiment by adding other ingredients to this smoothie. Here’s a few I would suggest trying with this avocado banana smoothie recipe:

  1. Chia seeds: A tablespoon or two adds a boost of fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein. They have a mild flavor and thicken the smoothie slightly.
  2. Kale: Don’t be afraid to add more greens! Kale is a nutritional powerhouse with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium and antioxidants.
  3. Ginger: A small piece of fresh ginger adds a zesty kick and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Common Questions

My smoothie is too thick. How can I thin it out?

Add more liquid, such as water, milk (dairy or non-dairy), or juice, a little at a time, and blend again until you reach your desired consistency.

Can I use a ripe but not-quite-perfect avocado?

Yes, as long as the avocado isn’t overly brown or mushy. A slightly soft avocado is fine for blending.

Can I substitute the banana with something else?

While the banana contributes sweetness and creaminess, you could try using mango, pear, or even a bit of honey or maple syrup for sweetness. The texture might be slightly different.

Can I use frozen avocado?

Yes, frozen avocado chunks are available and work well in smoothies. They also help make the smoothie colder and thicker.

Is avocado and banana smoothie good for you?

Yes! The bananas and avocados lend a creaminess to the whole smoothie while boosting the fiber and adding some natural sweetness for a quick energy boost. Avocados are rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, reducing cardiovascular disease risk. They’re also rich in potassium, essential for balancing blood pressure.

Do banana and avocado taste good together?

They sure do. Bananas and avocados blend into a creamy, subtly sweet mix, ideal for smoothies. The banana’s sweetness masks the avocado’s mild flavor, creating a delicious and nutritious combination.

I made the smoothie at 11:00 this morning. Shared a sip with my husband and son. Hubby said it needs to be sweeter. Son said the texture was weird, AND it needs to be sweeter. I was okay with the texture. I get why it wasn’t sweeter — meant to be healthy!! By 2:00 my stomach was growling. So next time I would add the protein powder that was suggested if it’s meant to be lunch!! I’m looking forward to trying tomorrow’s smoothie!!

What a yummy first recipe for the 10 day challenge. Even though I’ve never been a mango fan, I enjoyed every bit of this smoothie!

I didn’t care for this one. I typically don’t like avocado in smoothies, but I have it a try anyway.

I did it just like the recipe said, And it was very good. I think next time I would use a little less banana and more mango

Delicious! Love how creamy a smoothie with avocado is! I think I might throw a bit of mint in this next time!

Excellent blend of smoothness & flavor. The avocado adds creaminess without overpowering the taste. Perfect way to start the day

I enjoyed this smoothie. A added bonus is the healthy ingredients!
This reminded me of the going green recipe that is in the vitamix recipe book; However this was good, but not as flavorful as going green!

I doubled this recipe for My 18 year old daughter and myself, we both really liked it. I agree with the other reviewers that we thought a little more mango would have been nice. Or next time I will ripen a mango for more sweetness and freeze it myself. Also, I think I could have used a more ripe banana for a little more sweetness as well. The smoothie was still VERY smooth and thick with only half of the avocado called for (I doubled recipe but only had half an avocado).

This is a good recipe but I like the idea of adding orange juice and using a few ice cubes to make it more like a smoothie.

Wow! The first smoothie (Avocado Banana smoothie) was great! Cream, sweet and I couldn’t tell the Avocado was there (I thought it would change the flavor). Can’t wait to see what’s next!

Very simple recipe, but needs to be a tad sweeter. I would add a little more fruit. Otherwise I really liked this recipe.

I’m not one to like bananas in my smoothie but I actually enjoyed this one. I love bananas by themselves but not generally with anything else.

  11. The Avocado and Banana smoothie was delicious. My sister does not really like avocado but she said the smoothie was delicious too. Great way to start the day.
