Avocado Banana Smoothie Ingredients

  • Water is a simple, underrated smoothie base. It keeps the flavor clean, light, and refreshing without overpowering the fruit.
  • Avocado adds healthy fats that boost creaminess, help you stay full, and improve vitamin absorption.
  • Banana brings natural sweetness and smooth texture that balances the greens.
  • Mango adds extra creaminess, masks any “green” taste, and delivers vitamins A and C.
  • Protein powder: Adding about 20 grams of unflavored, unsweetened protein powder balances the fats from avocado and carbs from fruit. It helps keep you full, supports muscle recovery, and lets the smoothie’s natural flavors shine without added sugars or fillers.

Expert Tips

We used water as our liquid base to keep the calories down, yet you can use almond milk, oat milk or even coconut water with this avocado smoothie recipe.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Add water and spinach to a blender and blend on high until completely smooth. This helps break down the greens for a creamy base.
  2. Add avocado, frozen mango, and banana, then blend again until thick and creamy.
  3. Adjust with more water if needed, taste, and add a squeeze of lemon or lime if desired.
  4. Add in protein powder and blend on low until thick and creamy to minimize aeration
  5. Pour and enjoy right away for the best flavor and texture.

Ingredient Swaps

Here’s a few suggestions to help you swap ingredients based on what you have on hand.

  • Sweetness: Mango or pear (instead of banana).
  • Creaminess/Protein: Greek yogurt.
  • Avocado Replacement: Cashews or coconut cream.
  • Mango Alternatives: Pineapple, peach, or berries (strawberries or blueberries)

Smoothie Add-Ins

Feel free to experiment by adding other ingredients to this smoothie. Here’s a few I would suggest trying with this avocado banana smoothie recipe:

  1. Chia seeds: A tablespoon or two adds a boost of fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein. They have a mild flavor and thicken the smoothie slightly.
  2. Kale: Don’t be afraid to add more greens! Kale is a nutritional powerhouse with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium and antioxidants.
  3. Ginger: A small piece of fresh ginger adds a zesty kick and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Common Questions

My smoothie is too thick. How can I thin it out?

Add more liquid, such as water, milk (dairy or non-dairy), or juice, a little at a time, and blend again until you reach your desired consistency.

Can I use a ripe but not-quite-perfect avocado?

Yes, as long as the avocado isn’t overly brown or mushy. A slightly soft avocado is fine for blending.

Can I substitute the banana with something else?

While the banana contributes sweetness and creaminess, you could try using mango, pear, or even a bit of honey or maple syrup for sweetness. The texture might be slightly different.

Can I use frozen avocado?

Yes, frozen avocado chunks are available and work well in smoothies. They also help make the smoothie colder and thicker.

Is avocado and banana smoothie good for you?

Yes! The bananas and avocados lend a creaminess to the whole smoothie while boosting the fiber and adding some natural sweetness for a quick energy boost. Avocados are rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, reducing cardiovascular disease risk. They’re also rich in potassium, essential for balancing blood pressure.

Do banana and avocado taste good together?

They sure do. Bananas and avocados blend into a creamy, subtly sweet mix, ideal for smoothies. The banana’s sweetness masks the avocado’s mild flavor, creating a delicious and nutritious combination.

My son got an Avocado that was as hard as a rock so I had to use a little bit of Wholly Avocado that I had. Walmart has no nice greens so he got frozen Kale. All things considered, it didn’t turn out bad.

I love the creaminess of the smoothie and tropical flavor. I added the protein boost powder which helped to keep me full longer.

My husband and I enjoyed this recipe but my kids did not. We liked that it wasn’t very sweet and I liked that I got to use up my very ripe avocado.

We liked it but have question about measuring spinach. Do you press the leaves down to measure the cup? I think I put too much spinach in as could not taste mango and my banana was small. Will try it again as taste not bad at all and was refreshing after working outside.

This smoothie is nice and thick and creamy. I would add a whole banana next time just to get it a touch sweeter because this one isn’t very sweet, but still very yummy.

Avocado and Banana smoothie was sweet but not too sweet. I was thinker then I thought it would be. I did add coconut water and drank it down. I love avocados and bananas, and. I did. think it would turn brownish, but it stayed green. Though I didn’t give it much chance to turn brown it was so good it didn’t last long. I will keep that recipe in my smoothie recipe files.

My banana was not sweet yet!
It’s so creamy though. I’ll definitely try this one again.

Loved it. I froze mine ahead of time and just added apple juice instead of water. It was so simple.

This is a very thick, tasty smoothie. If you don’t care much for really sweet smoothies, this one will be your new best friend!

This is a really smooth smoothy!!! I think it is the queen of the green smoothies. The banana flavor, on mine, overpowered the mango.

Love this! It’s very refreshing and energizing! I did add a bit more mango (about 3/4 cup frozen) and about 1/2 cup orange juice. Still kept the 1 cup water, and used a frozen half banana. Oh and I threw in a Tbsp of chia seeds. It’s creamy in texture with a tang. I will definitely make this one again!

Not so good; either you use the banana, or the avocado for creaminess. I like to eat my avocado plain anyway!

Although thick and creamy, I found this to be just ok in flavor. Maybe my ratios were off, as I had to add more water. Possibly weight measurements would fix this…I expected a punch of flavor but was left underwhelmed.
