Turn a Fruit Smoothie into a Green Smoothie

Transforming fruit smoothies into green smoothies is super easy and the added health benefits don’t hurt.

Adding leafy green vegetables to a fruit smoothie provides extra nutrients to break down the natural sugar in fruit, which then allows your body to burn that energy slower + longer. That means you aren’t hungry an hour after downing this blueberry spinach smoothie!

You can take any healthy smoothie recipes you love and add 1 cup (or a handful) of spinach to them if they don’t already have leafy greens, and you won’t even taste the difference. Yet you can be proud of yourself for adding a whole cup of spinach to your body!

New to leafy greens? Start with 1/4 cup in this blueberry spinach smoothie, then work your way up to a full cup. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your tastebuds adapt to that leafy green goodness. For smooth, creamy results every time, see my guide on how to make a smoothie.

ingredients for a healthy snack including blueberries, strawberries, banana, spinach and plant milk.

Ingredient Swaps

Smoothies are super versatile, especially ones with berries.

  • Swap in pretty much any berry for the blueberries here or any low sugar fruits of your choice. I love Costco’s frozen mixed berries, and you can also make frozen meal prep smoothie packs for quick, grab-and-blend convenience.
  • Any non-dairy milk works in place of the almond milk base. You might get a different taste + texture depending on what you use, yet you might find a new fav combo too!
  • Looking for a non-banana substitute? Mango works great, has a little less sugar than banana, and you can find more ideas in my no-banana smoothies.

Finding the Best Almond Milk

There are so many almond milk products on the market right now! How do I know which one is best? My rawkstar team actually tested as many brands as we could find, to bring you our top almond milk brands.

Yet, did you know you can make almond milk at home, too? I’ve got a no-fail recipe, along with a few tips to help you make delicious homemade almond milk. Choosing your fav option only adds to the value of this blueberry smoothie.

Organic vs Non-Organic Smoothie Ingredients

While I try to buy organic ingredients for my smoothies, it’s not always possible or in the budget. So I use EWG’s dirty dozen list to know which produce should be organic if possible.

This guide provides the most up-to-date info on a variety of produce, so I know what I’m putting into my body, as well as feeding to my kids. Some ingredients for this blueberry spinach smoothie are on the dirty dozen list, so I make sure to buy the organic versions.

Helpful Tools

Notes

  • You can swap blueberries for any berry you can find. I like to use pre-packaged frozen mixed berries to give it a strong robust flavor.
  • Make sure to use at least 1 frozen fruit for a refreshingly cool smoothie.
  • Swap almond milk with the plant milk of your choice, or swap with water.
  • To lower the natural sugar in this recipe replace 1 banana with 1/4 avocado or 1/4 cup frozen cauliflower. Freeze bananas for later and learn how to cut avocado.
  • The right smoothie blenders help make even the leafiest greens blend smoothly every time.

Very simple smoothie but so good for you. I love drinking this before working out. Gives me so much energy

  3. i plan to make this tomorrow. The instructions say to blend spinach and milk but the ingredient list has no milk, only water. ???

    1. Hey Steve, this recipe actually calls for Almond Milk for the liquid base, but you can def use water or any other preferred plant milk. I always recommend blending the liquid base with the leafy greens first to help break down and liquify the leafy green part as much as possible. 🙂 Hope this helps!

I actually love hiding spinach in blueberry smoothies! Such a yummy addition of the strawberries too!

  5. I don’t use milk but water with fresh spinach , and frozen blueberries and strawberries

    1. Using water as your base is a great way to lower calories and fat content in a smoothie, if needed. Great swap!

    I really enjoy this smoothie!
I am someone who dislikes green leafy vegetables and have never liked the idea of eating spinach or kale or even lettece.
So when we had some leftover spinach from a meal delivery pack and we didn’t use it I made this smoothie.

The blueberries and banana cover up the spinach taste and the blueberries change the colour so it doesn’t look green!
Thanks and I will be making this again soon!

Another favorite smoothie recipe for me! A great way to sneak in some greens for those who don’t like them. Saving the recipe for when my grandchildren visit.

Did not care for this particular smoothie mainly due to the almond milk. May need to find an alternative for these recipes.

    1. Hey Linda – def feel free to swap out almond milk for another milk of your choice. We’re all about customizing around here!

Made this smoothie & was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it! The blueberries add a strong flavor punch.

I will add another banana or perhaps a couple dates next time I make this. Berries are so healthy, but just need a little more flavor for me.

  10. I swapped the berries for just strawberries and added in oats. My husband and kids loved this one and was more filling because of the oats.

Yummy- think my banana was a little too ripe because it made the smoothie very sweet but it was good.

I really like this, but my family isn’t as big of fans. I don’t have a high speed blender, so maybe it is because the blueberry skin doesn’t completely disappear? Or it’s not as bright of a color? Either way, I still like it. I also think it is a great one to turn into a meal replacement smoothie.

    1. So glad you love this Blueberry Spinach Smoothie Colleen! If you aren’t already, be sure to blend your liquid and spinach alone first, before adding the rest of the ingredients. This helps to get a smoother smoothie every time. 🙂
