Turn a Fruit Smoothie into a Green Smoothie
Transforming a fruit smoothie into a green smoothie is super easy and the added health benefits don’t hurt.
Adding leafy greens to a fruit smoothie provides extra nutrients to break down the natural sugar in fruit, which then allows your body to burn that energy slower + longer. That means you aren’t hungry an hour after downing this blueberry spinach smoothie!
You can take any healthy smoothie recipes you love and add 1 cup (or a handful) to them if they don’t already have leafy greens, and you won’t even taste the difference. Yet you can be proud of yourself for adding a whole cup of spinach to your body!
New to leafy greens? Start with 1/4 cup in this blueberry spinach smoothie, then work your way up to a full cup. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your tastebuds adapt to that leafy green goodness.
Ingredient Swaps
I always say smoothies are versatile, however, this especially applies to any smoothie with berries. There are so many types of berries available, and pretty much any of them can be swapped in for the blueberries in this recipe. I love the Costco bags of frozen mixed berries, and often use that in this smoothie.
Any dairy-free milk works in place of the almond milk base. You might get a different taste + texture depending on what you use, yet you might find a new fav combo too! Looking for a non-banana substitute? Mango works great, and has a little less sugar than banana.
Finding the Best Almond Milk
There are so many almond milk brands on the market right now! How do I know which one is best? My rawkstar team actually tested as many brands as we could find, to bring you our top almond milk picks.
Yet did you know making your own almond milk is super easy too? I’ve got a no-fail recipe, along with a few tips to help you make delicious homemade almond milk as well. Choosing your fav option only adds to the value of this blueberry smoothie.
Organic vs Non-Organic Smoothie Ingredients
While I try to buy organic ingredients for my smoothies, it’s not always possible or in the budget. So I use EWG’s Dirty Dozen guide to know which produce should be organic if possible.
This guide provides the most up-to-date info on a variety of produce, so I know what I’m putting into my body, as well as feeding to my kids. Some ingredients for this blueberry spinach smoothie are on the Dirty Dozen list, so I make sure to buy the organic versions.

- Make sure to use at least 1 frozen fruit for a refreshingly cool smoothie.
- Swap almond milk with the plant milk of your choice, or swap with water.
- To lower the natural sugar in this recipe replace 1 banana with 1/4 avocado or 1/4 cup frozen cauliflower.
Very nice. This seems to be the classic smoothie.
Very nice!
Classic berry smoothie and it was delicious. Added some chia and flax to boost nutrition.
used blueberries and fresh strawberries, hemp seeds for protein, chard and baby kale, cashew milk.
it was great, drank some, and wanted thicker added 1/4 cup of oatmeal made it perfect.
Super tasty! I added a chocolate peanut butter protein powder and it was like having dessert for breakfast!
The Blueberry Spinach Smoothie is my favorite so far! My E320 Vitamix makes it a breeze to prepare!
Delicious!! A healthy treat for me and my toddler.
I really like this smoothie. I substituted the strawberry with pineapple and added protein smoothie powder.
Enjoyed the mix of berries. Used 1/2 a banana and 1/4 cup of frozen cauliflower rice to up the veggies a bit. Will definitely be making this one again!
Oh my! This one is amazing, by far the best smoothie I’ve tasted!! The flavors blend perfectly and it tastes wonderful! It’s a keeper for sure.
This is one of my favorites, perhaps because I love blueberries. Always leaves me feeling satisfied!
Great combination of flavor in this one. Consistency was a little too thin for my liking, but I can adjust the amount of almond milk the next time, so it’s a keeper!
This is a pretty basic fruity green smoothie with 1 part greens, 3 parts fruit. So, first I made this with mixed frozen berries and water(almond milk wasn’t on my copy of the ingredients). I feel like this has too much banana for a berry smoothie and it overpowers the berry flavor, which I love.
I’ve gotten used to greens in my smoothies and if you have too, you might want to cut back the fruit a bit if you’re watching sugar. I’ll make this again, as I love the basic spinach and berry smoothie, but drop the banana and use a bit more greens. The almond milk would definitely keep it creamy, with or without the banana.
Love it!! Tasty, creamy and delicious! Definitely adding it to my faves. I added Vega protein and it complemented it very well. I did the mix berry combination. A winner!!
My favorite so far!
I’m always afraid to make smoothies with spinach but surprisingly this smoothie was bright and delicious! I love that I didn’t taste the banana but it was nice and creamy. I love that the blueberries and strawberries were the stars!
Classic fruity green smoothie!
I added a little more spinach & just half of a banana to ease up on the sugar. Tasted marvelous!
Just finished the blueberry smoothie – delicious! Thanks for these great recipes!
