Why Youโ€™ll Love This Detox Smoothie

Packed with leafy greens and tropical fruit, this smoothie is light, refreshing, and loaded with fiber and antioxidants to support digestion and hydration. The best part? Itโ€™s made with just five simple ingredients that support optimal health.

  1. Supports healthy digestion: Thanks to the fiber-rich combo of kale, spinach, mango, and pineapple, this smoothie helps keep things moving through your digestive system. Fiber acts like a gentle broom for your gutโ€”supporting regularity and helping your body naturally eliminate waste.
  2. Reduces bloating: The water content in the fruit and leafy greens, along with their natural enzymes (like bromelain from pineapple), may help reduce water retention and ease bloat. Itโ€™s a refreshing way to flatten your belly without extreme cleanses or diuretics.
  3. Fights inflammation: Leafy greens like kale and spinach are rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients that help your body manage inflammation. Combined with the natural enzymes in pineapple and mango, this smoothie delivers a gentle, food-based way to help your body recover from stress, processed food, or overindulgence.

Pro Tips

Use frozen fruit to get that thick, frosty textureโ€”like a smoothie shop classic.

Prep ahead by portioning your ingredients into freezer bags for a grab-and-blend detox option.

Add a squeeze of lemon or a slice of fresh ginger for even more zing and detoxifying power.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Fresh spinach: Look for bright green leaves without any slimy spots. Organic is ideal if you’re blending it raw. Rinse thoroughly to remove any dirt or grit. If you’re using baby spinach, there’s no need to chopโ€”just toss it in.
  • Kale (stems removed): Choose curly or lacinato (dino) kale with crisp, dark leaves. Avoid bunches with yellowing edges or wilted spots. Remove the thick center stems. Tear or chop the leaves before adding to the blender for a smoother blend.
  • Frozen mango: Look for pre-chopped frozen mango in the freezer aisle for convenience. If using fresh, peel, cube, and freeze it yourself. Store chopped mango in freezer-safe bags for easy smoothie prep.
  • Frozen pineapple: Like mango, frozen pre-cut pineapple is a time-saver. If buying fresh, choose one that smells sweet at the base and has a little give when squeezed. Cut fresh pineapple into chunks and freeze on a parchment-lined tray before transferring to a storage bag.

How to Make Detox Smoothie

  1. Start by pouring the water into your blender, followed by the spinach and kale. Blending the leafy greens first with just the liquid creates a smoother base and helps eliminate any leafy chunksโ€”no one wants a chewy surprise mid-sip! Blend for 30โ€“45 seconds until the greens are fully broken down and your mix looks vibrant green and frothy.
  2. Next, toss in the mango and pineapple. If you’re using frozen fruit, thereโ€™s no need for iceโ€”your smoothie will be perfectly chilled and creamy. Blend again until smooth and silky, scraping down the sides if needed. This is where the magic happensโ€”the tropical fruits add natural sweetness, balancing out the greens beautifully.
  3. Pour your detox smoothie into your favorite glass or travel cup. Take a moment to appreciate the gorgeous color (that green glow means itโ€™s packed with nutrients!). Sip slowly to support digestion and help your body absorb all that goodness. This smoothie is perfect as a morning reset, post-workout fuel, or afternoon pick-me-up.

Common Questions

Can I use fresh fruit instead of frozen?

Yes! Fresh fruit works, but your smoothie will be thinner and less frosty. To keep the thick, cold texture, try adding a few ice cubes or freezing your fruit in advance.

Do I need a high-speed blender for detox smoothie?

A high-speed blender makes it easier to break down leafy greens like kale and spinach, especially if you’re using frozen fruit. If you’re using a standard blender, blend the greens with the water first, then add the fruit.

Can I make detox smoothie ahead of time?

Absolutely. You can prep and freeze the ingredients in a smoothie pack, or blend the smoothie and store it in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Just give it a good shake or stir before drinking.

Can I add protein to make it more filling?

Yes! You can add a scoop of plant-based protein powder, chia seeds, hemp hearts, or nut butter to make it a complete meal or post-workout smoothie.

What’s the best time of day to drink a detox smoothie?

The best time to drink a detox smoothie is on an empty stomach. In other words, an empty stomach means you don’t have to worry about your smoothie sharing space with other digesting foods, which can lead to a bloating and upset stomach.

Are detox smoothies good for you?

This detox smoothie is essentially a green smoothie, of the healthiest drinks you can have. Plants are a key foundation to living a long, healthy life as we know from the Blue Zones around the world. The easiest way to eat more plants is to blend them up then drink them down, just like in the green detox smoothie recipe below. It’s simple, quick and (maybe most importantly?) clean up is easy.

Iโ€™m giving it 5 stars because I know itโ€™s detoxing but I substituted spinach with arugula and that was a mistake!! Arugula has too strong of a taste for a smoothie, especially combined with tropical fruit

  2. good. I decided that summer would be a better time for me to do this challenge. I really love my warm oatmeal in the mornings and did not really enjoy drinking something so cold when it’s cold out. Made it through the challenge!

This smoothie is so delicious! Itโ€™s not too thick and those tropical flavors really stand out. 5 of us drank it and all 5 loved it. 5 stars for sure

I liked it! It wasn’t sweet, but was still okay. I am proud of myself for finishing the challenge and would do it again.

What sets today’s kale smoothie, the last smoothie, apart is its velvety texture, a result of meticulous blending that ensures a smooth and luxurious consistency. No leafy residue or fibrous bits disrupt the enjoyment, making each sip a silky journey through a garden of verdant goodness. Cheers to finishing day 7 and completing a week’s worth of a smoothie challenge! Can’t wait for the next time and hope to implement smoothies and these recipes on a regular basis.

Detox Smoothie! I thought the blend of kale and spinach would be too much, but all of the ingredients blended evenly in this smoothie. The pineapple added enough sweetness so, for me, it didnโ€™t need dates or anything else. I would drink a smoothie like this every once in a while.

This is the best smoothie included in this challenge IMO. I enjoyed the mix of spinach and kale. Iโ€™d say this smoothie is pretty similar to the Island Green Smoothie (I used regular water and coconut water). This smoothie was thiccc and a little tangy!

Once again a yummy smoothie for the final day of the Smoothie Challenge! The sweetness of the mango and pineapple was refreshing!

I switched the amounts of pineapple and mango due to availability. I left out the protein powder. This smoothie was refreshing and delicious. With already prepared and frozen fruits, it was easy to make.

This is delicious though I didnโ€™t have a ripe mango so I added strawberries and blueberries.
I also poured some over granola which was very good too.

  11. I love anything mango or pineapple so this was a big hit with me. Used all spinach since I didn’t have kale on hand. Definitely repeating this week’s rotation. Loved them all. And I want to return to my one green smoothie a day rule. Thank you for all of the delicious recipes!!

Loved the flavor of this one! I did have to add about 1/4 cup more water as it was too thick to pour out of my blender.

Wasn’t sure about this one… but definitely give it a thumbs up! It’s bright and refreshing. Didn’t have spinach so subbed tatsoi. Used a generous cup of frozen mango, fresh cut pineapple and a tablespoon of flax seed instead of protein powder.

  14. Wooooooohoooo… You took the words right out of my mouth! It is the 7th day but absolutely not the last day for healthy, delicious, flavorful smoothies to become a part of my daily regimen. The challenge pushed me to not only finish what I started, but also inspired me to make a daily commitment to take better care of ME!! Thank you for inviting us to the challenge. You Rawk!!

I was going to make myself some GF/ vegan pancakes, but I checked my email first and saw todays smoothie. So I made the better decision– smoothie of course! Had frozen mango and pineapple. Used unsweetened coconut water. Added ground broccoli, chia and flaxseed. So turned into a smoothie bowl. Sprinkled some unsweetened coconut chips, cacao nibs and grain free granola! Yum-o! Waaayyy better for me than pancakes!
