Plant-Based Diet to Burn Fat

I fell in love with a plant-based diet when I lost weight and gained tons of energy without even trying. Drinking smoothies and eating meals that were rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds did the trick! I began seeing meat, eggs and dairy as more of a condiment that goes with my plant-powered meal.

To help with the results, I started focusing on blending ingredients that are scientifically proven to burn fat and boost metabolism, which leads to weight loss. Let's dive into these fat-burning smoothies so you can see just how tasty and simple weight loss can be.

Why Smoothies Help You Lose Weight

For most of us, there's a balance between the good things and the not-so-good things. (I'm talking to you, French fries with my veggie burger.) My point is, it's hard to always eat healthy. This is why I like to do the Seasonal Cleanse using green smoothies (like this fat-burning smoothie!) as my breakfast for 21 days. It gets me back on track and makes sure I drink the best smoothies for weight loss and my overall health.

There are special occasions when we want to indulge. And it's hard to eat healthy all the time when traveling. You know the drill. We do our best. I don't believe in punishing ourselves for enjoying a treat now and then.

Weight Loss Smoothie FAQs

Are smoothies a good way to lose weight?

They can be! Start with 100% real, whole-food ingredients. Don't add any sugars or sweeteners (other than real, whole fruit!), and choose a liquid base that is unsweetened. Make sure your smoothie has healthy fat and protein so that it's filling and won't leave you hungry 90 minutes later.

Which smoothie is best for a flat tummy?

My fat-burning smoothie has specific ingredients that boost the metabolism. Healthy fat is necessary for your body to break down carbs and protein, so make sure NOT to cut the fat!

What can I put into a smoothie to lose weight?

A good smoothie with protein, healthy fat and whole-food carbs is a great combo for a healthy snack or meal that can promote weight loss. My fat-burning smoothie contains spinach, mint, celery, green tea, grapefruit, pineapple and avocado.

Build Muscle to Burn Fat

I'm a big proponent of eating healthy as much as possible and participating in a regular exercise routine. That looks different for all of us with our varied interests, schedules, time constraints and lifestyles. There's nothing that helps boost your metabolism more than exercising to build muscle.

More muscle means more fat-burning capabilities.

For me, that's running 3-5 times a week and lifting weights three times a week. When it comes to boosting your metabolism, exercise goes hand-in-hand with healthy eating. Certain foods have fat-burning and metabolism-boosting abilities. Adding them into your diet can help magnify weight loss efforts. I'm a huge fan of smoothies, especially when I can use natural ingredients to transform them into a weight loss smoothie.

Give your body energy (i.e. high-quality calories) to power it through a workout. The workout helps build muscle, which burns more calories (i.e. fat) the rest of the time. See how nicely that works? It's a beautiful thing!

plant based ingredients

Foods to Boost Metabolism

Our bodies need proper fuel to keep up with the demands of daily activities. It's important that the calories we consume, especially if we're trying to lose weight, gain muscle, or just improve our performance, are quality calories.

A protein bar may be high in calories and full of nutrition, but it won't fill you up in the same way a plate of salmon, brown rice and steamed veggies will. But a high-quality (preferably homemade) vegan protein bar can give you the energy you need to power through a workout or recover from one.

What does that mean? It means that recipes need to tick off several boxes: healthy fats, protein, complex carbs, vitamins and minerals and/or a combination of all of the above. The above fat-burning smoothies have all that and more!

I swapped the celery for cucumber and added 3/4 tbs of milled chai seeds and 1/2 tbs of milled flaxseed, almonds, brazil nuts, walnuts &CoQ10.
I like it, except for the bitterness from the grapefruit (i'll try and use just the segments next time) and I don't like mint. Can I swap the mint for another herb or reduce it?

That sounds delish! Def try just the grapefruit segments as the pith is bitter, however its full of fiber and vitamin C so it can be a balancing act. As for a mint swap you can def try it's cousin basil. You could also try one of many other varieties of mint, such as spearmint, apple mint or pineapple mint. Let us know which is your fav!

You need to soak the linseed overnight otherwise you will damage your intestine’s membrane in the long run.

I never leave reviews on anything but I really feel like I needed to on this! I really wasn’t sure what it would taste like and must admit, I was pretty apprehensive, however I was absolutely blown away! It was delicious!! Slightly bitter from the grapefruit (I assume) but not in a bad way! It tasted sooo refreshing and filled me up right through until the evening (in my job, I very often skip lunch so tried this as a replacement), and curbed my snacking habits! Now I’ll just give it a few weeks to see how it aids me in my weight loss journey! Thank you so much for this lovely recipe!

We think 1 smoothie per day is a great habit, Hailee. At most, we replace two meals per day with green meal replacement smoothies - yet that's during a shorter period of cleansing. Regular plant forward meals for your other two meals are best when rawkin a 1 green smoothie a day habit. 🙂

I love this smoothie! I definitely had to swap out the grapefruit. I used oranges instead. I filled up a ton of mason jars and froze them. Hopefully that'll work well. I work really early and never have time to make breakfast. Fingers crossed to feel great and shed a few pounds.

      February 28, 2022 at 3:03 pm

Making smoothies ahead is a great help, Jolleen! Freezing in mason jars can get a bit tricky, so be sure not to fill all the way so your smoothie has room to expand when freezing. And keep in mind you'll need to mix well after thawing. We love making these DIY Freezer Smoothie Packs for a quick way to have a fresher smoothie in the morning. You've got this!

    • Jen Hansard

      January 21, 2022 at 2:21 pm

Hi Michelle- you could swap the grapefruit with lemon to keep the sugars low and the vitamin C high. I love lemon so I could see this being delicious and keeping the smoothie aligned with your health goals. Yet if you aren't a huge lemon fan, I would probably do half an orange and half a lemon to cut the sourness down a bit.

I would suggest using a green apple instead and use a little bit more water. The high fiber content in the apple plus the low sugars will balance the smoothie and still get you the benefits. You could also swap with an orange yet it'll be sweeter (which isn't always a bad thing, right?)

Hi Ginika! Growing your own is a great option, so be sure to check your local garden center for fresh mint plants. 🙂 Swapping in basil could work here - or you could drop in the tiniest amount of a natural peppermint extract or high quality food-grade peppermint oil instead. Let us know what you try and what you thought!

Hi Abbey— absolutely. Water is my #1 substitution for all recipes where weight loss is a goal. Instead of pineapple, you could use frozen cherries. That would be my recommendation since cherries are lower on the GI index (won't spike blood sugar levels and are just insanely delicious.)

Didn't use your recipe, plan to use it next. I had some tomatoes that were overripe so I made my first green smoothie out of them. I used 2 tomatoes, a handful of chopped spinach, a banana, 1/2 cup of yogurt, 1 orange, juice of 2 lemons and a scoop of whey, 1//2 tsp of ginger plus about 1/2 cup of water. I was surprised by how good it was. It didn't taste anything like the veggies tastes by themselves. I was just using up what I had in the house. I have been using lots of fruit with water and whey for a while but decided to try the green smoothie when I found a bag of chopped frozen greens I assumed were spinach at a harvest give away that I have been getting my fruit from. Overripe fruit makes wonderful smoothies all by themselves. I freeze my bananas and make them into ice cream in my blender to have for dessert. They are so good. Taste like real ice cream. I get this overripe fruit and veggies all the time and puree them then freeze the puree for my smoothies, but now I will add some of the nuts I get an abundance of from the give away place. I even get dried cherries, and I guess they could be soaked to reconstitute them and use them also. I have a lot of them. The reason I wrote this was your list of items we could use really impressed. I wonder if I could soak and cook beans and add them to the smoothies also. I have lots and lots of dried beans of all kinds. Will that work?

Thanks so much for sharing Marlene! We typically save beans for including in recipes like our Thai Lettuce Wraps, yet if you give some beans a blend def come back and let us know what you thought!

Hi Yessi! In place of avocado, you could use a nut butter of your choice or a combo of banana + MCT oil. Banana brings the creaminess and MCT oil adds the healthy fat you'd be missing without the avocado.

What does 1/4 avocado equal in cups of frozen avocado chunks? Thanks!

Depending on the size of your avocado chunks, it would likely be 2-3 pieces.

Can you substitute the green tea with Matcha??

Totally Erica! Great idea. Matcha is the powdered version of the whole green tea leaf, so it would work well here. Plus you'd get additional health benefits by consuming the whole leaf vs. what you find in the tea.

Needed something to have a little sweetness to this smoothie - not great tasting - probably needs crushed ice to make it more palatable. Maybe adding berries and some other sweeter fruit might help. I would like to lose weight and enjoy the health benefit of the smoothie but his recipe is not very palatable.

To up the sweetness factor, try adding a bit more banana or a date or two. Keep in mind that this will increase both the calories and natural sugars.

Thank you for your clip about making smoothies. I was surprised you did not mention strawberries. They’re both, soluble & insoluble fibre as well as body fat burners and not to forget, they’re gorgeously delicious. also, blueberries were strangely absent from your menu

I like this smoothie and the purpose of it. Could you add an apple or prunes to the smoothie or substitute the pineapples for one of these to get the benefit of the fiber or would it change the purpose of the smoothie if you did add them? Thank you in advance for responding!!!

We love pineapple in this smoothie for it's water and fiber content, so you're idea of prune is great! Since apple or prune wouldn't be as high in water content, you may need additional liquid when blending. Let us know what you try and what you think!

I like this smoothie and have used it as a snack as well as added protien powder to make it a meal. I have a tendency to fall into a very low calorie intake trap on occasion and this smoothie has helped me keep my cal intake closer to where it should be without being heavy I my system.
I am however wondering what can be substituted for the pineapple. I have tried doing half cup frozen blueberries with half cup mango. Is this okay or is there something about the pineapple that makes this smoothie work better?

Great question Sherry! We like pineapple in this smoothie because of it's higher fiber and water content. That's what really helps us 'get going' with weight loss. However, some of our fav swaps for pineapple are oranges, mangoes or peaches. So you're idea of swapping in mango is right on the money!

I am desperate to loose weight, I like the simplicity of this recipe and it makes sense. The taste is not the best, but I can do it to loose weight. I have found that the older I get the harder it is to loose weight, I am 61 now. We adopted a year old puppy for company on walks. But I have no energy, I was hoping the combination of the dog and this smoothie get me moving.

Whether it's an aversion to grapefruit or a med interaction you're avoiding - you're def not alone in needing to swap out the grapefruit Eden! You can use orange, tangerine or clementine instead. Happy blending!

We love it when everyone gives new things a try, OJ - so if the avocado isn't an allergy, you might give it a blend! We promise you won't even know it's in there! However, if it is an allergy or you just can't stomach it, you can totally swap it out. Try MCT oil + flaxseed or adding in some chia seeds to help replace the good fat and fiber we get from avocado.

Mint can be tricky to replace, yet the closest we've found is it's cousin basil. If it's just that peppermint isn't your jam, you could try one of many other varieties of mint, like spearmint, apple mint or pineapple mint (which would be totally fab in this recipe!). Let us know what you blend and how you liked it!

I can't remember if I've already commented on this recipe...but I had to again, just to be sure! I LOVE this smoothie. What's funny, though, is I can't stand grapefruit, and I usually only like celery in soups! But my body was craving not-so-sweet smoothies, so I did a search through the SGS smoothies and came up with this one (admittedly, the "fat burning" part caught my eye too :). I decided to take the plunge and check it out, and it has actually become one of my favorites, which is still a shock to me. It's light but filling, and I love that you can adjust the sweet-tart ratio by adjusting the grapefruit and pineapple. This one is going in regular rotation.
