Recipe Ingredients + Health Benefits

Kimberly Snyder is the original creator of this fun smoothie and I chose to make a version of hers. Let’s find out what’s in this smoothie and why:

  • Romaine lettuce: This lettuce has a neutral taste, so it doesnโ€™t overpower this smoothie. Itโ€™s a surprisingly good source of beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant thatโ€™s been found to protect against agingBonus: Romaine lettuce has a high water content for skin hydration!
  • Spinach: Spinach is an iron powerhouse (and doesnโ€™t alter the taste of this smoothie). Itโ€™s one of the richest sources of iron among leafy greens. Iron helps transport oxygen around the body and aids in energy production.
  • Lemon: Lemons have a high vitamin C content. Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals that cause oxidative damage and skin aging. Vitamin C is also crucial for collagen production, as itโ€™s necessary for growth and development of tissues. The alkalizing power of lemons also helps neutralize toxins, expedite the disposal of waste and stimulate digestion.
  • Apples and pears: Apples and pears help to balance out the bitterness of the greens with some natural sweetness. They’re both high in fiber, which helps the body break down the food we eat.
  • Banana: Add some natural sweetness with a banana, as well as make this smoothie super creamy.
  • Coconut water: This liquid provides natural electrolytes and great hydration to this beverage. I like using this instead of juices since it doesn’t add any extra sugar to my smoothie.

Feel free to make this your own. Adding herbs like parsley or cilantro can give you a natural morning detox. Use plant-based protein powder to turn this smoothie into a meal replacement. Use a high-speed blender for the smoothest, chunk-free result.

Kimberly Snyder’s Glowing Green Smoothie

Kimberly Snyder is a celebrity nutritionist (Drew Barrymore and Reese Witherspoon are among her smoothie-drinking disciples) and author of The Beauty Detox Solution. I stumbled across this glowing green smoothie recipe on Reese’s Instagram account and loved her personal twist on it.

Reese has gorgeous skin and happens to star in one of my favorite movies: Sweet Home Alabama. I was excited to make her smoothie recipe that was inspired by Snyder’s.

According to Kimberly Snyder, โ€œAs it cleanses and detoxifies your system, the Glowing Green Smoothie will give you sustained energy, glowing skin, and optimal digestion. It also fosters a focused, clear mind. It’s here to support us daily on our lifeโ€™s journey and is an integral part of my morning practice.โ€

In addition, Snyderโ€™s morning routine starts with a cleansing cup of hot water with lemon followed by her signature smoothie. I’ve got a similar routine, starting the day with theย best detoxย tea.

How To Make This Green Smoothie

Now, the great part of this recipe is that you donโ€™t have to spend hours chopping and preparing. Here’s how I make mine:

  1. Cut all of the ingredients into large chunks.
  2. Add spinach, lettuce, lemon and coconut water to the blender and blend until no leafy chunks remain.
  3. Add pear, apple, banana and protein powder (if using) to blender and blend again until smooth.

Pro tips: Youโ€™ll want a high-powered blender, like a Vitamix, to get a really smooth consistency. Add more coconut water or filtered water for a thinner smoothie.

Using these two-step blending instructions ensures that all the leafy pieces are actually broken down. No leafy chunks here!

I like adding in my homemade protein powder to bump up the protein by 10 grams as well as add more healthy fats and fiber. You can also add fiber and hydration by tossing in some celery (both the stalks and leaves!).

FAQs

How do you make a glowing green smoothie?

It’s so easy! I roughly chop up theย ingredientsย first, just to make them fit into myย blenderย more easily. Then Iย blendย theย leafy greensย and liquid. After there are no chunks left, I add in the remainingย ingredientsย andย blendย a second time until smooth.

Is it good to drink a green smoothie every morning?

I think so! Starting my day with a green smoothie helps me wake up, kickstarts my metabolism, gives me a leg up by getting in those first servings of fruits and veggies right off the bat and keeps me regular (if you know what I mean).

Are green smoothies full of sugar?

They definitely don’t have to be, yet it depends on how you make them. Stick to whole foods only, with no weird additives or added sugar. Opt for lower-sugar fruits if you prefer and make sure every smoothie youย blendย containsย leafy greensย and healthy fats to help break down the natural fruit sugars. Addย plant-basedย proteinย powder to give you extraย protein.

I made the vitamix recipe of this smoothie years ago when I had an over abundance of romaine lettuce and was looking for a smoothie recipe to help me use it up. I remember being impressed then by how good it could taste with so many greens. I enjoyed your version too! Thanks for sharing the story behind it I never knew where the recipe came from or why. My only addition was to zest the lemon because I really enjoy the lemony flavor.

I’ve never used actual lettuce in a smoothie before, only spinach and kale. It’s always fun to try something new.

Recipe was good but I wasn’t crazy about the lemon. It donโ€™t blend up very good. The flavors were yummy.

    1. I meant didnโ€™t blend up!! Thatโ€™s what I get for multitasking while posting ๐Ÿ˜‰

Great idea using romaine lettuce in a smoothie. I used 1/2 head, and this worked out well for me. Will definitely incorporate romaine in future smoothies because it imparts additional hydration, nutrients, and fiber. Thanks so much

well, through no fault of the recipe, I accidentally added arugula in with the spinach, and my boyfriend ate the pear, so I had to improvise with a little more apple and more coconut water. The result was a thick kinda globby shake that taste almost nutty.. And I’m not sure my romaine was the freshest. I will have to try again… It does look like it has promise

This is my fav smoothie so far this week in the green smoothie challenge. I used frozen fruit as I prefer my smoothies cold. The only modification I made was to use 1/3 of a banana as I find that is all I need to sweeten the taste.

Yum! Once again, in the Green Smoothie Challenge, this recipe did not disappoint. I really like a cold smoothie so I froze the banana and pear ahead.

I enjoyed this – my spinach measurement was a bit off (free handed too much) but I still enjoyed the flavor. The fruit flavors in there made sure that the spinach wasnโ€™t too overpowering even though I had used too much!

This smoothy has a bit of a bitter after taste. While I did not think I would like the kale smoothy, I found that one much nicer tasting than this one.

Well, this was new for me! I actually liked this Glowing Green Smoothie. I added more water after I blended everything, so it wasnโ€™t that thick. I especially love how I know that this is packed with beneficial benefits for me.
