Ingredients in a Strawberry Banana Smoothie
This smoothie is super simple to make; it’s only four ingredients! Here’s what I blended it:
- Almond Milk: I love adding non-dairy milk to smoothies as a way to boost nutrition and the creamy factor. Use these almond milk brands or make almond milk at home, whichever you prefer!
- Spinach: This strong leafy green is loaded with nutrients PLUS provides fiber to help your body break down the natural fruit sugars in the smoothie.
- Strawberries: The antioxidant powerhouse of this smoothie, and a great way to add vitamins A and C to your day.
- Banana: A creamy addition that is slightly sweet and helps this smoothie blend well.
As always, feel free to add a scoop of homemade protein powder to give this smoothie a protein and healthy fat boost. Doing so gives you extra energy, keeps you full longer and is a great way to turn this smoothie into a meal.

Adding Leafy Greens to a Smoothie
You might wonder why adding leafy green vegetables to your daily smoothie is important. I mean, you’re already using whole fruits and plant-based liquid bases, why add greens?
Leafy greens provide the fiber needed to help your body break down the natural glucose found in sugar. I love fruit smoothies, yet many of us have a hard time drinking straight fruit and not feeling sluggish a few hours later.
Leafy greens like spinach help slow down the body’s absorption of the natural fruit sugar, giving us fuel without the sugar crash.

How to make Spinach Strawberry Banana Smoothie
This spinach strawberry banana smoothie is super easy to make, yet for the best results, be sure to follow my steps:

Step 1: Blend your spinach and almond milk until there are no leafy chunks left. The time this takes may vary depending on what type of blender you have.

Step 2: Add the remaining fruit ingredients and blend again until smooth. If you don’t have a high-powered blender, allow the frozen strawberries to thaw a bit before adding them to the blender. This will give you the best shot at a creamy result.

Yes! Any smoothie made with whole food, plant-based ingredients and leafy greens is a great addition to your day. It will give you extra vitamins and minerals (always a plus) as well as natural energy that leaves you feeling refreshed and not sluggish.
Definitely! Always make sure to wash your smoothie ingredients well before adding them to your blender, yet raw spinach (and other raw leafy greens) are great smoothie ingredients.
It can be! My strawberry banana smoothie uses spinach as the leafy green and boasts 119% of the RDV of vitamin C, 57% of the RDV of vitamin A and 36% of the RDV of calcium.

My daughter is Type 1 diabetic. She wants to go all day without eating. I asked her to let me make smoothies for her to see if they will help with the nutrients she is lacking. Too many meds and vitamins for me. She agreed because I told her there are smoothies for diabetics. I made this one and she actually drank a full 12 ozs for me. She said she smelled the banana but said the smoothie was tasteless. I will make a different one for her everyday hoping she feels a difference in drinking a smoothie instead of going with nothing to eat. Thanks Jen!
Great job, Mom. I hope you found one she loves.
I do this a lot. . .with this I add either raw pumpkin seeds or raw sunflower seeds in the mix.
I use water and add flax seeds. Taste great in vitamix!
Flax seed is so great for added protein, omega-3’s and fiber. Way to blend it Josh!
Can I use water instead of any type of milk?
Hey Kayla – great question! Yes, you can def use water any time instead of milk. This will result in a smoothie that is a touch less creamy, yet lower in calories and protein.
What would be the net calories per serving for this smoothie? And can i replace almond milk with soy or coconut milk?
Hey Ellie! There are 145 calories per serving for this smoothie. For additional nutrition info, check the Nutrition Facts directly below the recipe. You can use any type of liquid base you choose. Plant-based milks we often use are almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk, and cashew milk. (We prefer to stay away from soy milk as soy is a common allergen.) Happy blending! 🙂
could i blend this in a nutribullet?
Sarah, our smoothies are meant to be blended in any blender out there! Many people in our community have and love Nutribullets. 🙂
Correct if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure bananas are high glycemic index. My trainer never wanted me eating these in the morning because of that. Hope this helps
Hey Amy,
Bananas are actually known to be low on the GI scale and their GI value is only a 51.
Hope that helps!
