Tips for Making the Best Smoothies with Kale
These kale smoothie recipes taste amazing (not like a leafy green punishment) and is easier than you think. Here are a few tricks I swear by:
- Use frozen ingredients: Keep your smoothies thick and refreshing by using frozen ingredients. You can freeze kale ahead of time. You can also check out my guide on frozen meal prep smoothie packs for convenience.
- Blend the greens first: Give your kale a head start in the blender with your liquid. This helps break down the tough leaves. If you’re new to blending, check out my detailed guide on how to make a smoothie for easy tips.
- Add natural sweeteners: Fruits like banana, mango, pineapple, or apple balance the earthy flavor of kale and make every sip enjoyable.
- Boost the creaminess: A little avocado, Greek yogurt, or nut butter can make your smoothie rich and silky, perfect for a filling breakfast.
- Sneak in extra nutrition: Chia seeds, flaxseeds, or hemp hearts add fiber, protein, and healthy fats. To boost protein content, you can also add my favorite homemade protein powder.
Benefits of Kale Smoothies
Kale is packed with vitamins A, C, and K, fiber, and antioxidants, which help support your immune system, digestion, and overall energy. Blending it into a smoothie makes it easy to consume more greens than you’d normally eat in a day, while pairing it with fruits helps keep you full and satisfied.

Common Questions
Absolutely! I actually love using frozen kale. It’s super convenient and helps make your smoothie extra thick and cold without needing ice. Just toss it straight into the blender with your other ingredients, and you’re good to go. For a more detailed guide, check out my blog on how to freeze kale.
It depends on your blender and your patience level. I usually remove the thick stems because they can make the smoothie a little bitter and add fibrous chunks. But if your blender is powerful, like one of recommended smoothie blenders, you can leave them in, just blend a little longer.
I usually go with about 1–2 cups of loosely packed kale per smoothie. That’s enough to get a good nutrient boost without overpowering the flavor. If you’re just starting with leafy green vegetables, start smaller and work your way up.
Both are awesome, but they serve slightly different purposes. Spinach is milder and blends super smoothly, making it easier if you’re new to green smoothies. Kale has more nutrients and a slightly stronger flavor, which is perfect if you want a nutrition punch and don’t mind a little earthiness.
