Letโ€™s be honest: some mornings youโ€™re lucky if you remember to put on deodorant, let alone whip up a fresh and nourishing green smoothie from scratch. Thatโ€™s why frozen meal prep smoothie packs are my secret weapon. Iโ€™m talking about prepped, stored in the freezer, ready-to-blend smoothies to save your time, sanity, and sad spinach from dying a slow death in your fridge.

If you love smoothies but hate daily messes, wasted produce, or chopping pineapple at 7am (who doesnโ€™t?), follow along. Your future self is gonna love you for this!

Benefits of Meal Prep Smoothies

Smoothie prep doesnโ€™t have to be complicated or chaotic. All you need are a few toolsโ€”measuring cups, wide-mouth mason jars or freezer bags, a Sharpie, your favorite fruits and greens, and a handful of go-to smoothie recipes. Stick with a few tasty recipes with overlapping ingredients so youโ€™re not buying out the entire produce aisle. Cut your mango into chunks (frozen mango or pineapple works great), and label each jar or bag with the recipe name and what liquid to add laterโ€”because letโ€™s be real, you wonโ€™t remember.

  • Smoothie prep packs save you a ton of time. No more chopping, measuring, or searching your fridge for ingredients every morningโ€”just grab a pack, blend, and go. It makes busy mornings feel way more manageable.
  • They also help you save money. When you prep in bulk, you can buy produce in larger quantities (especially at places like Costco or Samโ€™s Club) and use it before it goes bad. That means less food waste and more bang for your buck.
  • Freezing ingredients also keeps produce from spoiling, especially those leafy greens or delicate fruits that always seem to wilt before you get to them. Smoothie packs help cut down on food waste significantly.
  • They reduce decision fatigue, too. You donโ€™t have to think about what to make each day or worry about having all the ingredients on hand. Just grab, blend, and youโ€™re good to go.
  • And finally, they make it easier to stick with healthy habits. When something is convenient, youโ€™re more likely to follow through. Smoothie prep packs take away the excuses and make consistency a whole lot easier.

Frozen Meal Prep Smoothie Packs

Make frozen smoothie packs with nourishing smoothie recipes for quick, healthy breakfasts all week long, plus tips, recipes, and a grocery list to smoothie meal prep like a pro.
Prep: 30 minutes
Total: 30 minutes
Author: Jen Hansard
Course: Smoothie
Cuisine: Plant-Based
Serves: 7 smoothies

Ingredients

  • 5 cups spinach
  • 2 cups kale
  • 3 bananas
  • 3 oranges
  • 2 cups mango
  • 2 ยฝ cups pineapple
  • 2 cups strawberries

Instructions

  • Slice or cut fruit into chunks.ย You can also cut fruit into smaller pieces and freeze ahead of time on lined baking sheets or use packaged frozen fruit. This will help keep the fruit and leafy greens from freezing together in a large clump and the smoothies will blend more easily.
  • Label bag and jar lids with recipe name and date. Be specific. You might also want to include how much of which liquid you will need to add before blending since we do NOT add liquid to smoothie packs.
  • Measure out the ingredients and pack into jars or bags.ย
  • Remove as much air as possible from bags and jars when sealing closed. Packย fruit and greens tightly into the jars and screw on the lids.
  • Place in freezer. Don't pack too tightly together. There should be some air circulation to help the contents to freeze quickly.

When ready to use

  • Remove smoothie pack from freezer. Add liquid to container or bag (which helps defrost the fruit slightly). You can also thaw for a few minutes on the counter or in warm water. The fruit and greens will come out of the jar/bag easier too.
  • Pour into blender and blend until smooth.ย

Notes

  • Smoothie packs will keep for several months in the freezer but are the very best quality when used within 2-4 weeks.
  • This sample prep guide uses naturally sweeter fruits. To lower the natural sugar in a smoothie, swap 1 banana with 1/2 an avocado.
  • Store smoothie packs away from foods with strong odors. Glass jars offer the best protection against odors.
  • Pick smoothie recipes with similar ingredients for bulk purchasing and to save money.

Make-Ahead Smoothie Tips

I don’t love spending my weekends in the kitchen. I’d rather be outside, yet I also know when I donโ€™t prep my smoothies, I either skip them completely or end up with a waffle in the toasterโ€ฆ or driving through Starbucks for an overpriced breakfast. Thatโ€™s why I swear by smoothie prep. Itโ€™s one big mess, one timeโ€”and then the rest of the week, Iโ€™ve got delicious, nourishing smoothies ready to go with zero chaos. Total game-changer. Here’s how to make it even easier:

  • Buy frozen if you hate chopping. I get frozen pineapple, blueberries, strawberries and mango at Costco and never look back.
  • Label your jars. Future you will not remember if itโ€™s “Mango Spinach Smoothie” or “Best Green Smoothie.”
  • Set a time that works for you. Donโ€™t stress if itโ€™s not Sunday. Monday night, Friday morning, whateverโ€”just pick a window and roll with it.
  • Batch it like a boss. Make a week or a month of smoothie packs at one time. Trust meโ€”youโ€™ll never regret having a freezer full of grab-and-blend options when life gets chaotic.

How to Use Frozen Smoothie Packs

When you’re ready to use your meal prep smoothie pack, remove from freezer. Add liquid base to container or bag (which helps defrost the fruit slightly). You can also thaw for a few minutes on the counter or in fridge overnight. This helps the fruit and veggies come out of the container more easily. Pour into a high-speed blender for smoothies and blend until smooth.

Common Questions

How long do smoothie packs last in the freezer?

Smoothie packs can last up to 3 months in the freezer when stored properly in airtight bags or containers. For best taste and texture, aim to use them within 4โ€“6 weeks.

Can I add protein powder or superfoods to smoothie packs?

Yes! You can add things like chia seeds, cashews, flax, spirulina, or protein powder directly to the pack. Just be sure to label it so you know what’s already in there.

Do I need to thaw smoothie packs before blending?

Not necessarily. You can blend smoothie packs straight from frozen if you have a high-speed blender. Otherwise, let the pack sit out for 5โ€“10 minutes or run it under warm water to loosen it up.

Whatโ€™s the best container to use for freezer smoothie packs?

Wide-mouth mason jars and quart-size freezer-safe bags (silicone or Ziplock) work great. Bags save space, while jars are reusable and eco-friendlyโ€”pick what fits your lifestyle (and freezer).

Do smoothie packs lose nutrients when frozen?

Freezing smoothie ingredients helps preserve nutrients, especially compared to letting produce sit in the fridge for too long. While there may be a tiny loss, itโ€™s minimalโ€”and way better than tossing wilted greens.

    1. Hi Elba.

Anytime is a good time to make green smoothies. Morning, Lunch, Dinner or a snack. Cheers!

      1. Hi there! I have just joined this group of “healthy smoothies” drinkers and from what I have read from comments made by those who appreciates what you are doing, I am totally glad to be part of this group. I am 67yrs old and wants to be healthy as my diet in the past leaves nothing to be desired, so I am determined to become healthier than I’ve ever been in my life and while on this journey lose kilos ( alot I might add) as well. I will keep you posted along the way. My day of reckoning starts tomorrow!!! yaaay!!!!

    2. I make the whole recipe which is normally two servings each morning then drink one at breakfast and one for lunch or a snack later on,

  1. Hi, I’m new to this smoothie business!
Freezing sounds like an ideal solution to me for saving time, but how long is it safe to leave the fruit and veg in the freezer for before they are bad to consume? Thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Hi Jenny.

Thanks for the comment. What type of container will you be using? I know most containers suggest 3-6 months.

  2. I place my fruits in plastic containers in the freezer or zip lock bags.
Mason Jars take up too much space in the freezer. I store my greens in a big ziploc bag and grab as needed.

  3. Hi
I’ve been using frozen fruits most of the time. Am I getting the same amount of nutrients as fresh fruits?

    1. Hey Micasha.

Fresh is best, but frozen is a close second. We love added frozen for the chill factor.

  4. I prep in regular mouth pint mason jars 1 serving (1/2 recipe)
When ready to use take off top, add liquid, screw on Oster blender blade to mason jar. Blend and drink from jar. Less clean up.

  5. Do the greens still blend okay mixed with everything? Or do you still recommend blending the greens and liquid together first then the fruit?

    1. Hey Christine.

Great question. When everything is frozen, just add the liquid and blend. Cheers. ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. My blender does NOT like everything frozen so I just let the bag rest on the counter or soak in water. Then I blend greens with liquids first. I don’t have a fancy blender so this works well for me.

  6. Aloha! ๐Ÿ™‚ I would like to ask if it is okay to mix oats to any smoothie? Thanks!

  7. Okay, so I recently discovered my blender blade end will fit my Mason Jar….game changer!!! So i can I freeze green tea, cucumber, apple, watercress, kale, celery and pineapple together in the jar? Or do any these need to be separated? Its so convenient to screw on the blade and blend!

    1. Hey Misty.

Awesome. I personally haven’t done this, but here is a link all about using your mason jar with your blender:

  8. Hello,
Is there any reason why I shouldnt blend a weeks worth of smoothies and then separate and freeze the individual portions? I’m not a morning person so it would be easier to grab a portion on my way out the door and wait for it to defrost…..
    Thanks!

    1. Hey Sophie.

You can totally do that. It will take a while to completely deforest, if you freeze a solid blended smoothie. We just prefer to blend that morning, there is just something about a freshly blended smoothie to us.

      Cheer + Happy Blendin’!

  9. Hi I appreciate your advice but have a question on freezing vegetables. The Fresh Preserving site says “Vegetables require blanching, a critical step to cleanse off surface dirt, brighten the color, help retain vitamins and reduce the action of enzymes which can destroy the fresh flavor.” Do you blach yours?

    1. Hey Candice. Great question. At this time we do not. If you have an Apple product you can press the square button with the arrow, and add to you home screen. ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Sorry, I don’t, but Firefox on Android 4.4+ (Kit Kat) has a “Save as PDF” option under ‘page options’. I used that to import into Kindle, if you don’t mind. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Hey we like a sorts of bananas, go for what you enjoy most. ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. My sister got my butt up off of the couch and became my walking buddy this past week! She is in CA and I and am in NH, so we call each other as we walk. Now she has encouraged me to do the 30 day challenge together and I’m looking forward to it! I have a couple of question. 1. about using green tea in the smoothies…can you use matcha green tea powder and water in place of the tea bags? It certainly would make our smoothies greener! 2. Can you suggest specific smoothies that would be good for weight loss? Thanks

  11. Hey! I LOVE that you can freeze everything! Great time saving idea. I thought the greens would go mushy and gross.

I use a magic bullet and have 6 individual cups, and just recently started making 4-6 cups all at once, putting in everything except the liquid and frozen items, and storing in the fridge, this really helped save time too. And I just discovered slicing bananas that are at my “perfect” ripeness, freezing on a baking sheet and then putting in a ziplock bag in the freezer. Again, I thought they’d turn brown or mushy, and they don’t at all! Smoothies rock!

  12. Recipe cards??? I could use those. I have my recipes saved all over the place. Email, Facebook, Pinterest, printouts, you name it! Help!

  13. If I freeze the already made smoothies instead of just the ingredients, how long do the smoothies stay good in the freezer?

    1. Here is a great link to know how long everything will last in the freezer.
