Summer brings the loooooooong, hot days, but also the best fruit if you’re craving a melon smoothie. Melons are packed with natural sweetness and loaded with hydration, making them one of my favorites in fruit smoothies.
If you’re looking for a way to beat the heat in the kitchen, this smoothie is for you.
I used watermelon in this smoothie, yet you can easily swap it for another summer melon like cantaloupe or honeydew. (Just make sure to remove the seeds first.) Watermelon is one of the low sugar fruits that is high in antioxidants and exploded with flavor, which is why you need to blend this melon smoothie while it’s in season!

How to Pick a Ripe Melon
I’ve spent a lot of time at the market picking up watermelons to try and find the perfectly ripe one. Yet, I have no idea what I’m doing. I want to blend this melon smoothie ASAP! So I Googled ‘how to pick a watermelon’ and got some great tips from The Pioneer Woman:
- It should be heavy (small or large)
- There should be a side that’s more yellow, from it sitting on the ground
- Once you find the yellow spot, knock on it. If it sounds hollow, then you’ve got a winner!
- Take it home, cut it up, and blend this melon smoothie before anyone else gobbles up all the watermelon. You can also check out my guide on how to cut melon.

Helpful Melon Smoothie Swaps
Watermelon is a unique fruit for smoothies, because it has two purposes:
- It’s the fruit
- It’s also your liquid. (I usually recommend blending one cup of liquid for most smoothie recipes, yet when it comes to melon smoothies, I lower the amount of actual liquid to compensate for the water inside the melon.)

This melon smoothie has NO liquid… and that’s on purpose. I want my smoothie to be drinkable, yet not juice. The 1 1/2 cups of fresh watermelon gives me all the water I need for this smoothie.
If you’re needing to swap out the watermelon, I suggest swapping for another fruit in the family: cantaloupe, honeydew or even zucchini. Swaps will change the taste, so you might need to add a banana or peaches to keep this melon smoothie sweet with any substitutions you make. Berries! Herbs! Leafy Greens! Oh… but for real. All of these are great additions to this summertime fruit. I like pairing it with berries because they add sweetness + tartness to the mix, all while keeping the natural sugar content low.
What’s your favorite melon? Just toss that into your blender with at least one frozen fruit to create a refreshing smoothie. You can blend watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe in smoothies and create something delicious. These work perfectly for making frozen meal prep smoothie packs too!
The biggest key is not adding too much liquid. Watermelon is already full of water, so try leaving out any extra liquid first, then add a bit of water if needed after your first blend. This melon smoothie should have plenty of liquid without adding any extra.

One of my favorites love the combo.
This Summer Melon Smoothie is absolutely delicious! Everything was so fresh!
Love the addition of watermelon in this. My kids even enjoyed this smoothie. I added a mix of flax, hemp hearts and chia seeds for some additional nutrients!
Refreshing! Truly delightful!!
Love this smoothie. Perfect!
Great and refreshing. I been adding avocado in all the smoothies to thicken them up
This one is a little thinner than the others and next time I’ll probably serve over ice and try with raspberries instead.
I had the Summer Melon(minus the melon) it was good but I believe it would have been better if I used watermelon.
What did you use instead?
My freshly picked blackberries were tart. Otherwise was good. I love watermelon and strawberry. Adding banana and honey got rid of tartness and made it even better. Next time I’ll mix more berries.
Super yummy added a little water to loosen it up a bit over all good
I like this one the most so far! (From the 10 Day Green Smoothie Challenge) I love freshness of watermelon with berries!
I liked that the watermelon was noticeable but not overpowering, and the berries gave a nice pop of sweet-tart. I made mine the night before and kept it in the freezer portion of the mini-fridge in my hotel room, and it kept its smoothie texture. (In a normal freezer, it would’ve been frozen solid and taken half a day to thaw enough to drink.) … It made a nice breakfast.
I absolutely loved this one. The color might not look great, but it was delicious.
This was delicious. I did swap the blackberries for blueberries because I’m not a fan of all the blackberry seeds. Wish I had added some mint but I didn’t have any at the time. Will definitely make this again and make sure to have mint on hand.
This smoothie was very refreshing. I did add prunes, cinnamon basil, hemp, and flex seeds to this smoothie. You can definitely taste the watermelon in this smoothie and taste a little bit of all the other ingredients.
This was very refreshing today!! The watermelon added a little extra hydration which we need in the temps we have been having. Not used to watermelon in a smoothie but I have been sold.
I really like the taste of the watermelon and blackberries together.
Super delicious. I really enjoyed how fresh this one tasted.
At first, I thought It was crazy not adding any water. But, then after I thought about it, water is in the name of the fruit! Duh! After reading the blog I’m curious about a honeydew or cantaloupe base! Something to investigate this summer!
But, back to this one: great flavor! No banana which made the berries take center stage. Excellent!
Jennetta, if you make this one using honeydew or cantaloupe, come back and update us on what you think of the smoothie using those ingredients! 🙂
I enjoyed this blend for my lunch today. I swapped fresh cherries for the blackberries since I’m not crazy about the seeds, and it was refreshing. I then walked on the wild side by adding a serving of Organic Beets+ (a powdered mix of beet, pomegranate, cordyceps, lion’s mane, maca, and coconut water powder) and also a serving of homemade protein powder to add more substance. I’d make it again!
