Summer brings the loooooooong, hot days, but also the best fruit if you’re craving a melon smoothie. Melons are packed with natural sweetness and loaded with hydration, making them one of my favorites in fruit smoothies.

If you’re looking for a way to beat the heat in the kitchen, this smoothie is for you.

I used watermelon in this smoothie, yet you can easily swap it for another summer melon like cantaloupe or honeydew. (Just make sure to remove the seeds first.) Watermelon is one of the low sugar fruits that is high in antioxidants and exploded with flavor, which is why you need to blend this melon smoothie while it’s in season!

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Spinach: Adds leafy green vegetables without overpowering the flavor. Freeze spinach so you always have some on hand.
  • Watermelon: The hydrating, naturally sweet base of the smoothie.
  • Strawberries: Bring brightness and antioxidant support.
  • Blackberries: Add fiber and a deeper berry flavor.

How to Pick a Ripe Melon

I’ve spent a lot of time at the market picking up watermelons to try and find the perfectly ripe one. Yet, I have no idea what I’m doing. I want to blend this melon smoothie ASAP! So I Googled ‘how to pick a watermelon’ and got some great tips from The Pioneer Woman:

  1. It should be heavy (small or large)
  2. There should be a side that’s more yellow, from it sitting on the ground
  3. Once you find the yellow spot, knock on it. If it sounds hollow, then you’ve got a winner!
  4. Take it home, cut it up, and blend this melon smoothie before anyone else gobbles up all the watermelon. You can also check out my guide on how to cut melon.

Helpful Melon Smoothie Swaps

Watermelon is a unique fruit for smoothies, because it has two purposes:

  1. It’s the fruit
  2. It’s also your liquid. (I usually recommend blending one cup of liquid for most smoothie recipes, yet when it comes to melon smoothies, I lower the amount of actual liquid to compensate for the water inside the melon.)
delicious summer recipe

This melon smoothie has NO liquid… and that’s on purpose. I want my smoothie to be drinkable, yet not juice. The 1 1/2 cups of fresh watermelon gives me all the water I need for this smoothie.

If you’re needing to swap out the watermelon, I suggest swapping for another fruit in the family: cantaloupe, honeydew or even zucchini. Swaps will change the taste, so you might need to add a banana or peaches to keep this melon smoothie sweet with any substitutions you make. Common Questions

What fruit goes well with melon?

Berries! Herbs! Leafy Greens! Oh… but for real. All of these are great additions to this summertime fruit. I like pairing it with berries because they add sweetness + tartness to the mix, all while keeping the natural sugar content low.

What are the best melons to put in a smoothie?

What’s your favorite melon? Just toss that into your blender with at least one frozen fruit to create a refreshing smoothie. You can blend watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe in smoothies and create something delicious. These work perfectly for making frozen meal prep smoothie packs too!

How do you make a smoothie with watermelon?

The biggest key is not adding too much liquid. Watermelon is already full of water, so try leaving out any extra liquid first, then add a bit of water if needed after your first blend. This melon smoothie should have plenty of liquid without adding any extra.

Pro tip: put watermelon in BEFORE spinach so it’s closest to the blade and blended first and can create liquid to blend the spinach. I subbed blueberries for blackberries because I had them frozen (and blackberries are a little seedy for me in a smoothie). Added smoothie boost to make it a meal! Yum!

I really like the way the blackberries add a touch of tartness in this one. It is the first time I made a smoothie without adding any water or almond milk, the watermelon adds the liquid! A very fresh and summery smoothie!

We used cherries and blueberries and added mint. It was delicious and refreshing on a hot summer day.

This was a great recipe though I’ve started adding more vegetables to amp up my daily intake. It didn’t take away from the flavor at all.

Summer melon was very tasty, I’m enjoying all these great recipes for smoothie. I’m making sure I’m placing them in my recipe box.

Love how fresh and summery this one is! I used more strawberries in place of the blackberries, because I had a bunch of strawberries that needed to be used up.

This is probably just me…I am not a fan of most melons. I tried it again in this smoothie. To me this one is just okay. Again, it’s probably because I don’t care for melons.

Smoothie addiction is real people! I used frozen blackberries…can’t wait to find some fresh berries this summer….but this recipe is SO simple and versatile. My family loved it!

OMGEEE this smoothie screams summer!! The colour isn’t the prettiest but it tastes really good! I used a mixture of fresh watermelon and frozen watermelon. I think if you were to just use frozen watermelon, you may need to add some water to get the blender moving! It is so fresh and light!! The next time I make, I may add some hemp hearts or chia seeds as well for some added nutrients!! Give it a try (don’t judge it by it’s colour!!)

This one wasn’t my favourite. I struggled with the colour of the smoothie. The taste was okay, I used frozen watermelon instead of fresh and I’m not sure if that made a difference of not.

I like tart smoothies, and instead of following the recipe exactly, I replaced strawberries with cherries and blackberries with raspberries. I added a little lemon. I feel like this might be a different smoothie altogether but what I love about the original one is the concept of spinach, berries, and watermelon.

Not a fan of the color. However, it was surprisingly ok. I’ve never had watermelon in a smoothie so it may take some time getting used to.

This smoothie is so refreshing and light with the addition of watermelon. I like the combination or berries and watermelon, something I would have never thought to do.
