Summer brings the loooooooong, hot days, but also the best fruit if you’re craving a melon smoothie. Melons are packed with natural sweetness and loaded with hydration, making them one of my favorites in fruit smoothies.
If you’re looking for a way to beat the heat in the kitchen, this smoothie is for you.
I used watermelon in this smoothie, yet you can easily swap it for another summer melon like cantaloupe or honeydew. (Just make sure to remove the seeds first.) Watermelon is one of the low sugar fruits that is high in antioxidants and exploded with flavor, which is why you need to blend this melon smoothie while it’s in season!

How to Pick a Ripe Melon
I’ve spent a lot of time at the market picking up watermelons to try and find the perfectly ripe one. Yet, I have no idea what I’m doing. I want to blend this melon smoothie ASAP! So I Googled ‘how to pick a watermelon’ and got some great tips from The Pioneer Woman:
- It should be heavy (small or large)
- There should be a side that’s more yellow, from it sitting on the ground
- Once you find the yellow spot, knock on it. If it sounds hollow, then you’ve got a winner!
- Take it home, cut it up, and blend this melon smoothie before anyone else gobbles up all the watermelon. You can also check out my guide on how to cut melon.

Helpful Melon Smoothie Swaps
Watermelon is a unique fruit for smoothies, because it has two purposes:
- It’s the fruit
- It’s also your liquid. (I usually recommend blending one cup of liquid for most smoothie recipes, yet when it comes to melon smoothies, I lower the amount of actual liquid to compensate for the water inside the melon.)

This melon smoothie has NO liquid… and that’s on purpose. I want my smoothie to be drinkable, yet not juice. The 1 1/2 cups of fresh watermelon gives me all the water I need for this smoothie.
If you’re needing to swap out the watermelon, I suggest swapping for another fruit in the family: cantaloupe, honeydew or even zucchini. Swaps will change the taste, so you might need to add a banana or peaches to keep this melon smoothie sweet with any substitutions you make. Berries! Herbs! Leafy Greens! Oh… but for real. All of these are great additions to this summertime fruit. I like pairing it with berries because they add sweetness + tartness to the mix, all while keeping the natural sugar content low.
What’s your favorite melon? Just toss that into your blender with at least one frozen fruit to create a refreshing smoothie. You can blend watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe in smoothies and create something delicious. These work perfectly for making frozen meal prep smoothie packs too!
The biggest key is not adding too much liquid. Watermelon is already full of water, so try leaving out any extra liquid first, then add a bit of water if needed after your first blend. This melon smoothie should have plenty of liquid without adding any extra.

I made the mistake of freezing this recipe ahead of time and found the watermelon too hard to blend. I let it sit 10 minutes and then added some strawberry lemon kombucha (homemade) to get things moving. It turned out to be super tasty!
Was ok. I could taste the watermelon flavor through it.
Although it didn’t looks as appealing as other smoothies, it was tasty. I’m not a huge fan of melon in smoothies, but this one works thanks to the berries.
Made this as a breakfast smoothie by adding Greek yogurt, oats, matcha, and the magic trio (hemp hearts, flax seed, chia seeds). Because the flavours of the fruits can be subtle I found the hemp hearts flavour to be more forward than other smoothie recipes I’ve tried on this site. I still found it tasty but it might be off-putting for some.
Made this one last night. Had to work very early and didn’t want to wake the hubby with my vitamix lol. Was a bit short on watermelon so I added a couple chunks of cantaloupe. Still tasted great.
Mmmmm! I used a mix of blackberries, blueberries and raspberries along with the watermelon and spinach. Also added carrot tops and hemp hearts. Plus I added some water to thin it out.
My favorite
Five Star Rawk! I really liked this smoothie. I used a juicy sugar baby watermelon that was naturally sweet enough to satisfy my sugar cravings. I thought it offered a good balance with the lower sugar berries. Did I need to add liquid? Nope! I used the tamper to move the ingredients around in my blender and let the blades do the work. I did a full blend and did a few seconds of a second round to make sure it was smooth!
That’s so awesome, Jemia! Way to blend!! 🙂
Very balanced between sweet and tart.
Such a wonderful drink!
Watermelon taste is so good. I sure wish they made frozen watermelon so most of it didn’t go to waste.
I had no more watermelon so I used pear. Added some pineapple and chia seed, flax seed and hemp seed. A very tasty and filling meal✅
I liked the smooth, mildly sweet flavor of this smoothie. But it would not blend without adding some liquid. I had to add at least 1/2 cup of coconut milk so the blender would work. I would definitely make this again, but know ahead of time to add some extra liquid.
I love that this smoothie is made without water or bananas. Whenever I give my husband a smoothie, he says it tastes like bananas. He couldn’t say that this time. The flavor of this smoothie was unexpected and wonderful. Adding protein powder did not change it’s flavor, which is nice also.
This is so delicious!
This is so refreshing and easy! No additional liquid to measure and mix! Delicious!
This recipe feels like a classic summertime choice. Perfect balance of flavors and can’t even tell there is spinach mixed in.
Love the lightness & brightness in flavor that the watermelon brings!
Not a fan! I don’t think I like the spinach, watermelon combo. HUBBY approved though!
I found this smoothy to be lighter and a bit sweet. If I were to make again I would probably add a bit of lime to balance the taste.
