How to cut an avocado (the easy way)

Avocados are a great source of the “good fats” (monounsaturated fats), which helps raise your good LDL cholesterol levels. But many people don’t know the simple trick to making an avocado easy to cut. Check out the quick video demo below.

And if you’ve been afraid to add an avocado to a smoothie, start with 1/8 to 1/4th of an avocado. It adds such a rich and creamy taste.

Ingredients

  • 1 avocado
  • 1 cutting board
  • 1 sharp knife

Instructions

  1. Place avocado on cutting board
  2. Cut in half along the widest side
  3. Twist and pull halves a part.
  4. Remove the seed by gently hitting the knife into it.
  5. Cut into quarters.
  6. Peel the avocado skin off the quarters.

Avocado cutting tips

  • Make sure you hit the avocado seed hard enough to get the knife stuck in it.
  • Don’t cut your avocado until ripe. It should not be firm or mushy when you press it. It should be somewhere right in the middle.
  • Peeling the avocado gets more of the fruit flesh than if you were to scoop it out with a spoon.

    Holy kale— how have I never seen this before?! I have wasted so much of an avocado by scooping it out instead of peeling it like this. You just blew my mind Jen.

    I make each smoothie recipe for myself – so I get a smoothie for today and a smoothie for tomorrow with each recipe. When I use a recipe that calls for avocados, is it okay to drink the second half after it’s been in the fridge over night? Avocados go bad so quickly. Just had me wondering. Thanks!

      Hi Annie,

      Definitely! All of our recipes, including those with avocado will keep in your refrigerator for up to two days in an air tight container. Adding a little bit of lemon juice will help preserve all of their green goodness!

    I love using avocado in smoothies with cocoa powder. It’s a delicious way to make smoothies taste like a dessert – and the consistency is like a chocolate pudding if you add enough avocado. Mmm.

    I thought I saw a post about flash freezing avocados. Can you do this? If so, how? If not, is there a way for me to freeze extra avocado for my smoothies? Thanks! You gals are the best!

      Hi Jamey!
      One of the best ways to freeze your avocado is to purée or smash it up, put it in an air tight container, and freeze it. By doing this the avocado will freeze more evenly 🙂

    This is the funnest little short on cutting an avocado. We are lucky enough to have an avocado tree in our yard, and adding avo’s to smoothies makes them super creamy and rich. I love the little doggy bark at the end of the video too 🙂
