Start the season off right with this pumpkin smoothie. It’s got the perfect blend of sweetness, as well as some warming spices. The fact that it tastes like a pumpkin pie in smoothie form will make you forget you’re drinking a green smoothie! Fall is my fav time of year, from the weather to the food. I can’t wait for you to try this smoothie and watch your day transform into the fall-est of fall experiences.

How to buy Pumpkin puree

Did you know that not all pumpkin puree is created equal? Even on a product as simple as this, don’t forget to check the ingredient list. Companies have been known to add in other squash as filler in their ‘pumpkin puree.’ Also, make sure to grab 100% pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling. The pie filling can looks super similar, yet actually contains spices + sugar as it is meant for pie filling.

Making homemade pumpkin puree is also an option, and it can be frozen as well! Some say that pie pumpkins, or the cute, tiny ones you see at grocery stores, make the best puree. I’ve roasted some big ones and honestly can’t tell the difference.

To make puree, slice open a pumpkin from top the top stem to the bottom. Scoop out all the seeds, then place on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Drizzle the cut sides with a little olive oil, then place face down on the baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes, or until the pumpkin halves are soft. Scoop out the orange flesh from each pumpkin halve, and place in a cheese cloth. Squeeze out as much excess water as you can. I like to weigh out 15 oz batches when storing my puree, so that I can grab 1 to thaw for baking. This can be stored in mason jars or reusable silicone bags. Don’t forget to leave some puree out for this pumpkin smoothie!

Even festive smoothies can be nutritious, and this pumpkin pie smoothie is no exception!

  • Spinach: This leafy green is full of health benefits AND doesn’t affect the taste of the smoothie. Sure the smoothie is green, yet if you closed your eyes you’d have no clue. Spinach is a great leafy green to blend into smoothies for this very reason!
  • Almond Milk: I use almond milk to create a creamy texture and also add a little bit of protein. Need to swap for another kind of plant milk? Whether it’s coconut, oat, or more, I’ve got you covered.
  • Banana: This fruit is a great natural sweetener as well as helps make a creamy smoothie. They contain dopamine, which is an antioxidant that helps reduce free radicals.
  • Mango: Frozen mango blends the pumpkin and banana together well. It’s also frozen which helps chill down this pumpkin smoothie.
  • Pumpkin: This powerhouse ingredient contains 245% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin A. It is also 94% water, making it a great, low calorie option.

Pro tip: If you want to cut down the amount of sugar in this pumpkin smoothie recipe, then you can swap the 1/2 banana for 1/4 cup of cashews or cauliflower. This way your smoothie stays creamy, and your blood sugar stays happy.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Blend

This pumpkin smoothie recipe calls for 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice, which can be store bought or homemade. If you don’t have any on hand, then whip some up at home! My simple recipe includes:

  • 1/4 cup ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom (optional)

Just add these spices to a jar and shake, then it’s ready to use. Don’t be afraid to adjust the spice amounts based on taste preferences. The cardamom adds a bit of complexity to the flavor of the mix, which I like. And, you can use this spice blend for other recipes too!

How to add pumpkin spice to everything

This spice blend is a super fun way to add fall flavor to a multitude of dishes. Here’s how (and where) I like to add it:

  • Pumpkin pancakes: add it into the batter, sprinkle it on top of some coconut whipped cream, or mix it into the maple syrup.
  • Protein bars: swap in pumpkin spice instead of the cinnamon, and use dates or raisins for the dried fruit. You can also swap in 1 cup of pumpkin puree for 1 cup of the mashed banana.
  • Vanilla protein shake: add in 2 tsp of pumpkin spice to this smoothie recipe.
  • Candied pecans: swap the cinnamon with this blend, then top that roasted sweet potato, salad, or smoothie with a decadent fall topping.
  • Fertility pumpkin smoothie: this delicious smoothie is a powerhouse for those working through PCOS, and it can easily be jazzed up with a pumpkin spice seasoning

    Hi, got a question! (Again… though different place this time.)

    In the recipe it says “1 cup pumpkin, unsweetened (canned or fresh)”. Now, pumpkins aren’t really readily served in cans up here in the Netherlands, but I can get my hands on fresh pumpkins. I was just wondering, though… Do you guys cook the pumpkin first or do you throw it in the mix raw? I’m a bit hesitant about raw pumpkin, to be honest, so I’d love to hear from you about this!

    Other than that, sounds like a great recipe for the days to come! (It’s all wet and blustery weather up here, very autumny… Perfect pumpkin weather, though!)

    I have to say I was a little dubious. I have only recently begun to appreciate the flavor of pumpkin (in pumpkin spiced lattes and in pumpkin cake rolls!) I have never liked pumpkin pie. BUT, I had leftover canned pumpkin from a pumpkin roll I made and decided this would be a good way to use it. I used 2 mangoes (a little more than a cup, perhaps, but I didn’t measure it after I cut it up) 1 cup coconut milk, 1 cup water, 1.5 banana (1 frozen, 1/2 room temp) and the recommended spice, vanilla and spinach. As someone else pointed out, the color was that of split pea soup, but I didn’t let that stop me from trying it. I told myself I couldn’t waste it even if I didn’t like it, mostly because I don’t like to throw food away, but also because I know it has amazing nutritional value. All that to say, I loved it! Unlike the comments from another post, I found this smoothie to be very filling, and full of flavor. I had to come out of my smoothie box to try it (I usually always go back to beginners luck-type smoothies), but am so glad I did! Thanks.

    This was not my favorite out of all the recipes. I don’t like mangos either so I used frozen peaches and just a few pineapples. I couldn’t taste the pumpkin so I added a little extra pumpkin spice. Love everything you all do though!

    I tried this today because I LOVE pumpkin but I have to say it was my least favorite. I don’t know if it’s because I didn’t have pumpkin spice so I used cinnamon & nutmeg or what…but I couldn’t drink it. Plus my blender overheated and it made the drink warm so that didn’t help. I think my smoothie blender is done in. But I have a back-up Ninja. So I dumped out the pumpkin because I couldn’t drink it and decided to
    create something new (or maybe it’s a recipe here but I haven’t seen it). I’ll call it a Choco Coco Nutty I guess and here’s how I made it – it makes ONE serving:

    1 cup fresh spinach
    3/4 cup unsweetened chocolate almond milk
    1/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond coconut milk
    1 frozen banana
    1/2 cup fresh or frozen pitted cherries.
    Add a serving of chocolate or vanilla protein powder if you want, or 1/2 cup soaked raw almonds.

    Blend the milk and spinach first, of course.
    Add frozen banana and blend well
    Add the rest of the ingredients and blend til smooth.

    I added protein powder this time because I forgot to soak almonds. Substitute the cherries for strawberries or whatever fruit you’d like with chocolate. Oh and I added 1 tsp of chia seeds as I always do. You can add cacao powder, too if you want it even more chocolatey.

    I love it. Hope you do, too.

      P.S. the vanilla almond coconut milk mentioned above is ALMOND milk, not coconut milk, I typed that backwards, just thought I should clarify that. I use Almond Breeze – they have an unsweetened vanilla coconut almond flavor, it’s yummy.

    Please can you clarify for me the issue with dairy milk?are coconut and almond milk different? How?

      Hey Robyn!

      Great question! We’ve talked with a lot of nutritionists and milk isn’t all that it’s been hyped up to be. Dairy is one of the highest diet allergies (and often goes undiagnosed), yet can cause inflammation and infections. And if you aren’t buying organic milk, you’re also getting doses of antibiotics, hormones, etc that can tip your own body out of whack. So we just avoid milk for our family (and opt for almond milk). We get our calcium from plant-based sources mainlyβ€” broccoli, spinach and kale.

      It’s definitely a personal choice, and you just have to decide what works best for you and your family.

      Coconut milk is squeezed from the meat of the coconut which produces a sweet and tasty liquid. Though it is high in protein, fiber, and other micronutrients, it is also high in calories and fat. For this reason we recommend using coconut milk as a liquid-base only for special indulgences–maybe for date night desserts. This milk does help to protect your heart, but it will cost you in other areas if used on a regular basis.

      Almond milk is a lactose-free, warm flavored liquid that will provide you with vitamin E, protein, and fiber. Since it is lactose free it is easily digestible, and its even low in fat and cholesterol free. If possible, find an unsweetened kind of almond milk to stay away from the high amounts of sugar. Its a great base for those fall months!

      Chia seeds
      Fresh dates
      Nut Butters
      Unsweetened applesauce

    One thing I noticed is that it seems less filling than I’d like – and I drank 20oz over 2 1/2 hour period. Am considering adding coconut oil or another form of protein.

    Hi – this recipe looked so yummy, but when I went to the store, I couldn’t find any pumpkin or pumpkin spice (I live in Thailand and those aren’t popular ingredients. But, I did find some yams and cinnamon that I used as substitutes and it turned out great! Like a little pumpkin pie party in my mouth!

    Instead of using the banana and mango (I have issues with Candida overgrowth) I will use 1 avocado and a few drops of French Vanilla Stevia!
