I passionately believe that what we put into our bodies matters. That means the food we eat, the beverages we drink, the supplements, vitamins, and medication we take, and the things we don’t eat, drink, or ingest.
All of those things either help or hurt us.

Result-Driven Smoothies
I fell in love with a plant-based diet when I lost the weight and gained tons of energy without really even trying. Just drinking smoothies and eating meals that were rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds did the trick! I began seeing meat, eggs and dairy as more of a condiment that goes with my plant-powered meal.
To help with the results, I started focusing on blending ingredients that are scientifically proven to burn fat and boost the metabolism, which lead to weight loss. Now, let’s dive into this fat burning smoothie recipe so you can see just how tasty and simple weight loss can be. But first…
Why smoothies help you lose weight
For most of us, there’s a balance between the good things and the not-so-good things. (I’m talking to you, French fries with my veggie burger.) My point is, it’s hard to always eat healthy. Which is why I like to do the Fresh Start seasonal cleanse using green smoothies (like this one!) as my breakfast for 21 days. It gets me back on track and makes sure I drink the best smoothies for weight loss and my overall health.
There are special occasions when we want to indulge, it’s hard to eat healthy all the time when traveling. You know the drill. We do our best. And I don’t believe in punishing ourselves for enjoying a treat now and then.
Build Muscle to Burn Fat
What I’m a big proponent of is eating healthy as much as possible and participating in a regular exercise routine. That looks different for all of us with our varied interests, schedules, time constraints, and lifestyles. There’s nothing that will help boost your metabolism more than doing exercises that build muscle.
More muscle means more fat-burning capabilities.
For me, that’s running 3-5 times a week and lifting weights 3 times a week. When it comes to boosting your metabolism, exercise goes hand in hand with healthy eating. Certain foods have fat-burning and metabolism-boosting abilities and adding them into your diet can help magnify weight-loss efforts. I’m a huge fan of smoothies, especially when I can use natural ingredients to transform it into a weight loss smoothie.
Give your body energy (i.e. high quality calories) to power it through a workout. The workout will help build more muscle, which burns more calories (i.e. fat) the rest of the time. See how nicely that works? It’s a beautiful thing!
Fat Burning Foods to Boost Metabolism
Our body needs proper fuel to keep up with the demands of daily activities. It’s important that the calories we consume, especially if we’re trying to lose weight, gain muscle, or just improve our performance, are quality calories.
A protein bar may be high in calories and full of nutrition, but it won’t fill you up in the same way a plate of salmon, brown rice, and steamed veggies will. But a high-quality (preferably homemade) vegan protein bar can give you the energy you need to power through a workout or recover from one.
What does that mean? It means that recipes need to tick off several boxes: healthy fats, protein, complex carbs, vitamins and minerals, and/or a combination of all of the above. A fat burning smoothie, which I’ll show you how to make below will take you a long way!
17 Foods that Burn Fat Naturally
Here are some foods you can blend into a weight loss smoothie if you’re trying to boost your metabolism and burn fat:
- Nuts – whole, preferably raw and unblanched (almonds, walnuts, pecans); good fats and protein; almonds contain L-arginine (an amino acid) that when used pre-workout can help the body burn more fat
- Eggs – high in protein which helps boost metabolism; the body digests the protein and uses the fat and calories for fuel. Yes, some people truly do blend raw eggs in their smoothies— yet I never have!
- Berries – low in sugar but still sweet, high in fiber, high in antioxidants; helps burn fat; can help to improve blood flow
- Apple cider vinegar – the acetic acid in ACV helps with blood sugar levels
- Grapefruit –high in phytochemicals that stimulate the production of the hormone adiponectin which helps the body break down fat
- Green and white tea – caffeine in tea gives a natural boost of energy’ antioxidants in tea may help accelerate fat-burning by aiding the liver in converting fat to energy
- Chili peppers – capsaicin, the compound found in pepper aids the body in converting food to energy and abdominal fat loss; also works as a natural appetite suppressant
- Spinach + other leafy greens – chock full of vitamins and minerals and fiber
- Whole grains – like oats and brown rice; high fiber; slow-burning to keep you fuller, for longer and fuel the body
- Coconut oil and olive oil – healthy fats that help you feel satisfied when they are consumed; coconut oil is easily digested for quick energy
- Avocado – healthy fats, fiber, and vitamins, particularly B6 which counteracts cortisol, a stress hormone that contributes to weight gain via belly fat stores
- Flaxseed – high in omega-3 fatty acids – check out our organic, clean, specially formulated Protein Smoothie Boost with flaxseed
- Cinnamon – polyphenols (powerful antioxidants) boost the metabolism and help regulate blood sugar
- Pears and apples – high in fiber plus contains pectin; helps keep you fuller for longer and naturally sweet
- Grapes – high water and fiber content
- Celery – very high fiber, uses more energy to digest than it provides (i.e. negative calories)
- Dark chocolate – 70%+ cacao content is the important part; cacao contains high concentrations of polyphenols that push the body to burn fat

Can i use banana instead of avocado in this pineapple?
I want to try this weight loss smoothie but I’m allergic to pineapples . What can I replace with pineapples?
Great question! For those that can’t use pineapple, we’d recommend swapping in oranges or mangoes instead for this smoothie.
thank you so much I really appreciate your work here and you provide me best information which I need most thank you very much
Is there a way to substitute grapefruit with something else can’t have it because of my meds
★★★★★
pretty much any other citrus fruit works just fine.
Cant wait to try this out. I’ve just started on the smoothies for lunch or breakfast to avoid the carbs. Thanks to your recipe I shall get on this and hope to see the benefits of the weight loss.
So glad you’re blending! Weight loss can be a cool side effect, yet we hope you enjoy the added energy too!
best and interesting information would like to visit again
Love that you’re here, Rose!
I’ve been losing weight for a while now and I am happy with the results so far but I’m open to anything that’ll make it go quicker!
I burn (according to my fitbit) 3000-4000 calories a day on a normal days activities.
I am currently eating around 1300-1600 calories per day.
Is this smoothie designed to replace meals or to work along side them? All of my meals at the moment are of course calorie controlled/low saturated fat and high in fruits and veggies (up to 6 or 7 portions a day).
If I were to add this smoothie into my daily meal plan, would it help burn off more than the 218 calories it contains, or should I just stick with my current meal plan.
Thanks
Liam you’re a rawkstar!!! This recipe is designed to help turn on your metabolism and burn fat. If you’d like to make it a meal replacement to swap it out for one of your regular meals, you’ll want to add both clean protein (we love our Protein Smoothie Boost!) and a healthy fat. That will increase the calorie count of course, so it will depend on what works best for you.
Started drinking this at the beginning of Jan 2021. I still can’t believe my own eyes. I lost a whopping 15kg.
I had to lose weight for health reasons
Thank you
That’s amazing Stephanie! Rawk on!!
Can i do the green tea the night before to have it ready for the morning ?
Absolutely! Be sure to remove the tea bag at the end of the steeping time and store in the fridge until used.
I started making this smoothie every morning since January 5th. It is now February 4th and I am down 5.6 pounds. It works! I have also been incorporating more veggies into my daily routine and *trying* to work out. But this smoothie is what gets me motivated. It helps you start your day out on a great note! Try it!
★★★★★
That’s so awesome Jackie!!! You’re doing this the right way – one small change at a time. Way to rawk it!
I can’t wait to start using these smoothies in my quest to transition to a healthy lifestyle. I have several health issues which limits my physical activity. I am starting yoga and possibly lite walking. Will this be enough exercise, paired with the smoothies to really make an impact?
Absolutely Jenny!! Small steps are the better way to change your dietary and fitness levels. Making big changes all at once can totally lead any of us to giving up too quickly. Yet those baby steps, little by little and a positive attitude are the better way for lasting change. You’ve got this!
Hello…I’m really ready to lose some weight and start exercising. I was reading about this weight loss smoothie…it looks great but I was wondering if there is another that wouldn’t be so “veggie” tasting? I feel as tho if I’m gonna do this I want to be able to stomach it or enjoy it as much as possible rather. Thank you.
Hi Ashley! Rawk on girl! You can totally try out any of the additional weight loss smoothies we linked to toward the end of this article. Or just jump in and give this Fat Burning Smoothie a try! You’ might be surprised how much you like it… 😉
I made this and drink 2 -12 oz glasses of these a day in place of meals . I have lost almost 80 pounds
★★★★★
Holy moley Sherry!!! That’s amazing!! Rawk on girl!
Hi what quantity is a cup, a teacup? Thanks
Hey Chris – great question! We like to say a cup of spinach is about a good handful.
What does this taste like? Is it going to be sweet or veggie tasting?
Hey Sandra – While the pineapple does add a touch of sweetness, this is def not as sweet as other recipes containing things like banana, fig, maple syrup, etc. It’s more toward the savory or veggie end of things. 🙂
What would be a good substitute for similar benefits as the grapefruit and orange as I am allergic to both?
A granny smith apple!
I just made a different smoothie that had spinach, cilantro, ginger, frozen pineapple/avocado, lime juice, and a granny smith. It was amazing. Aparently granny smiths are fat burners too, from what I had read. I assume they would be great in any green smoothie.
Hi there Noella,
Great question! You can totally swap out orange or grapefruit using tangerine (if you can have those), papaya or mango. Check out our Rawkstar Substitution Guide for more helpful swaps!
I run cross country meets in the morning around 7-8 but I still need to eat something before I leave to have some energy when I run. Should I have the smoothie before I leave or would that mess with my stomach? Thanks!
Hey Aria. I used to run cross country! I would stick with oatmeal, toast with banana and almond butter 1-2 hours before the race and then have my smoothie after the finish line. Store it in a thermos so it stays cold. This is actually one of my fav post run smoothies. Good luck with training and your meets!
Can lemon be substituted for grapefruit? My medication prohibits eating or drinking grapefruit. thanks.
The recipe sounds really good. I read many comments but didn’t find any that said whether they lost weight. Did anyone lose weight using the Fat Burning Weight Loss Smoothie? If someone did, how many pounds per week?
★★★★
Hey Jo— if you’re really wanting to lose weight, it’s about consistency. Healthy habits is how you gain momentum and the weight will continue to fall off. So a daily green smoothie just like this one is a great way to go. If you’re wanting more guidance and support, check out our 21 day cleanse which starts with a daily green smoothie, yet adds in plant-based snacks and meals as well. The results are incredible and you learn how to eat in a way that is tasty and heals the body in incredible ways.
It’s not quite that simple, though it does work. Time of day is also crucially important. Eating right before bed for example causes weight gain beyond “calories in calories out” because melatonin (the sleep chemical) naturally causes the body to store more fats
I agree Dean— there’s soooo many reason why we gain and lose weight. Yet embracing a simple healthy habit and doing it consistently does lead to long term results that stick. When you swap a meal with a smoothie just like this one, you are adding is tons of goodness that will help burn fat and feel amazing. Some other things that help are hydration, movement, sleep and mindset. They all play a role in getting our body to function at its best. I love talking about this stuff, so thanks for bringing it up!
What time of the day is best to have this smoothie? I usually like to eat oatmeal in the morning, should I switch it up? Also I have vegan protein soy powder, do you think this could be added into the smoothie? (:
Hi Pasha! Most of us love drinking our smoothies in the morning but really, any time of day that works for you is the right time to have your smoothie. If you want to switch it up you can or you can have your smoothie first and a little later, your oatmeal.
I love this smoothie it is one of the best I ever had and yes the avacado curves my appetite. Thank you for sharing:)
You’re welcome, Drea!
Hi, can a large batch of this be made, so that I can have it pre-made and drink it every morning before work? Or will it spoil after a day? Thanks
Hi Jaime! You can def make this ahead of time and keep it in the fridge and/or freezer. It will last 2-3 days in the fridge and a week or more in the freezer. 🙂
Can i use matcha powder instead of green tea? If yes what liquid should i use it with? Also is this ok to drink if im breastfeeding? Im 5 months postapstum and want to loose some weight. I just heard mint reduces milk supply. Please let me know. Thanks.
Hey Tanya. Yes, you can use matcha green tea powder. Just sub water for your liquid base. As far as your other question, we’re green smoothie rawkstars but we’re not doctors and we encourage you to check with your doctor/ob-gyn/nutritionist since they know you, your body and your baby best. Happy blending! 🙂
What are some tasty smoothies with food that people aren’t allergic?
Selina, it just depends on what foods you are allergic to. We have tons of awesome recipes, I’m sure you can find some with ingredients that agree with you. 🙂 https://simplegreensmoothies.com/recipes/smoothies
Hello, what can I use to replace the mint leaves? Can I use matcha green tea powder instead of the actual tea ? Can I use avocado paste instead?
Hey Keona!
1. There’s not really a good replacement for the mint leaves so if you don’t like them or can’t find them in your grocery store, you can leave them out.
2. Yes, you can. Use 1/2 cup of water for your liquid base.
3. Do you mean homemade or store bought? I think either way, you’ll want to make sure there’s just avocado (plus maybe a little lemon or lime juice) and no other added ingredients.
Happy blending!
Thank you for this recipe! Looking forward to trying it. Is there any liquid additive to this ? i.e. water or coconut water?
Thanks again!
Hey Anabelle! The 1/2 cup of green tea is your liquid base. Plus, the 1/2 grapefruit (when blended) will add a nice amount of liquid.
When is the best time to have it in a day?
★★★★
Hey Shemeer! You can drink this smoothie in place of a meal, with a meal, or as a snack. As long as you are drinking at least one green smoothie each day, the time of day doesn’t matter. Do what works best for your schedule! 🙂
Last question for now lol , so do i have to use more ingredients than i would for a single serving? My blender will make at least 2-3 servings at once.
Keona, we want to help make green smoothies quick and easy for you so keep those questions coming if you need to! (We aren’t Difficult Green Smoothies, after all! 😀 ) Let’s say you want to make 3 servings at once. Take the recipe, multiply the ingredients by 3, add them to your blender and blend away. Then, divide your smoothie among 3 air-tight containers (we love mason jars for this). If you’re making them for that day or the next day, they are ok to store in the fridge. If you are making them for later in the week, then def store them in the freezer. So you could put 1-2 in the fridge and the rest in the freezer.
Hello , how do i make a week supply (7 days) without having to make it one smoothie at a time? I work crazy hours so i don’t have time to make one everyday
Hey Keona! You can do a couple things: 1. Prep a week’s worth of smoothies and put your prepped bags/containers in the freezer. When you’re ready for each day’s smoothie, take one out of the freezer, blend it and enjoy! 2. Blend a week of smoothies, put them in freezer-safe jars or containers, store them in the freezer, and take one out each day to drink. (Remember to account for time to allow the smoothie to thaw.) 🙂
So do i make them one at a time ? Using the steps ?
Depending on the size of your blender, you can make multiple servings (3-5 or more) at a time and then divide them among your mason jars or other airtight containers. Or you can prep and cut up all the fruits and veggies and make your freezer bags in assembly-line style.
Hello is there a way i can do these smoothies as a juice? My husband likes juices and not smoothies , i enjoy the smoothies
Hey Keona! I’d say probably just put the ingredients in a juicer. But I do want to go over a few pieces of juicing vs. blending info for you:
There are definitely arguments for both methods. What we can agree on is that blending and juicing are great ways to give your body incredible nutrients. Juicing will give you a more concentrated serving of nutrients, which can be a good and bad thing. This means that if a fruit has vitamin C in it, you’ll get much more vitamin C by extracting the juice because you need to use more fruit to get a full glass. The downside is that you aren’t getting the WHOLE fruit. You’ll be missing out on the fiber and all the other nutrients housed in the fleshy parts of the fruit. Blending gives you the whole fruit. Your body will be receiving ALL the nutrients. We also think that blending is less complicated than using a juicer, which is the primary reason we choose blending. We are, in fact, Simple Green Smoothies. 🙂
For more info on the two, check out this article: https://simplegreensmoothies.com/plant-based-diet/juicing-vs-blending-whats-the-difference
Hiya
Am a newbie to green smoothies am on medication so can’t take grapefruit will this affect the calorie loss if I sub an orange.
Also do I need to drink this everyday to see the benefits am trying to figure out what is the best ones to use for weight loss they also will be replacing my breakfast advice appreciated
Thanks
Hi Maeve! You can definitely sub an orange for the grapefruit in this smoothie, many folks have done that. It will affect the way the smoothie works a little bit. Keep all the other ingredients the same and you should be fine.
You can drink this smoothie each morning for breakfast if you like. Some folks like to have the same thing every day and some like to mix it up. We have a ton of other great recipes if you don’t want to drink the same thing every morning. Check out this post on Breakfast Smoothies for Weight Loss (https://simplegreensmoothies.com/recipes/breakfast-smoothies-for-weight-loss) and this one on Healthy Snacks for Weight Loss (https://simplegreensmoothies.com/recipes/healthy-snacks-for-weight-loss).
Hi there..
Can i swop the avo with something else?
Hey Liezl-ann! You can use banana in place of avocado but I’d suggest using a slightly green banana to keep the sugar content lower.
Made this everyday for 5days. I had to mix things up because I didn’t always have the ingredients. Used banana 4xs this week but avocado today. I like it better with avocado. The first 2days I used grapefruit after that was oranges. The first 3days was spinach, last 2days was kale. The rest of the ingredients were the same, mint, pineapple, celery and tea. I liked how it tastes, the celery makes it interesting. I’m a breast cancer survivor and needed something to kick start my diet. People usually lose weight on chemo but I gained a lot of weight. I’m a eater, I’ve always celebrated my life with food so it’s hard for me. They removed my ovaries and I’m on estrogen blockers which doesn’t help when losing weight. Anyways, did this smoothie 5days this week as a lunch substitute. I still drank my coffee every morning on my way to work. Then had my usual dinners. I also walked 2 miles everyday this week. Started at 241 now I’m 237. Lost 4pounds this week! Hope this helps anyone who wants to try it.
★★★★★
Hi Deborah! Congrats on kicking cancer’s butt! (My mom is a survivor, also.❤️ ) Sounds like you’re doing great on your journey to wellness. Green smoothies + moving your body is an awesome way to get yourself on track! Keep up the awesome job, we’re cheering for you! 🙂
When you say 1 stalk of celery do you mean the whole thing? Or 1 piece of celery?
Hey Blanca. There are roughly 8-9 stalks in one bunch of celery. This recipe calls for just one of those stalks. You can also watch Jen make this smoothie + explain all the ingredients. It’s in the video below the recipe. 🙂
Can you pre make these smoothie up minus the tea with all other ingredent chopped, measured and ready to blend and then freeze them?
Kale yeah you can, Lauren! 😀
We love to prep our smoothies ahead of time. Makes things so much easier when it comes time to blend. Here’s an article that talks all about smoothie prep: https://simplegreensmoothies.com/plant-based-diet/how-to/make-ahead-smoothie-prep
Thank you! I would love to try this next time i go grocery shopping!
YAY! We can’t wait for you to head to the grocery store, Akina. Make sure and reach back out and let us know what you think!
Hello
Thanks for the recipe. I can’t tolerate pineapple, it upsets my tummy. Can you suggest an alternative please.
★★★★★
Olivia,
Not friends with pineapple, we hear you! Some of my favorite swaps are oranges, mangoes, and peaches. Happy blending!
Thank for the information you have provided so that I can lose weight
★★★★★
You’re welcome, Michelle!
This receipe above sounds great but the problem is…….if you are taking meds for cholesterols — you can not have grapefruit, or too much grapefruit. It affect the liver. So…….what can you use to sub the grapefruit?
Thank you
Hi Helen! You can sub an orange for the grapefruit. 🙂
The 7 day smoothie plan is the smoothie in place of a meal?. If Not does it matter what time of day you have the smoothie?
Can you have the smoothie at 3pm before going to the gym . Then eat dinner at say 5:30.
Hey Karen! You can drink the smoothie in place of a meal, with a meal, or as a snack. As long as you are drinking at least one green smoothie each day. The time of day doesn’t matter, do what works best for your schedule. You could have it before going to the gym although I don’t recommend drinking it immediately before beginning a workout. Happy blending! 🙂
I would love to try your recipe.
But my medication for blood pressure states … definitely NO grapefruit ..
Is there any alternative I could use please .
Thank you
Hey Mosie, sub an orange in place of the grapefruit. 🙂
Can I still use a whey protein powder before and after workouts in conjunction with your smoothie?
★★★★★
Hey Pete, you definitely can. We prefer to used plant-based protein powders, and we sell one that’s *amazing* but if your go-to protein powder is whey, then go for it! 🙂
