Blending berries and spinach together created a delicious smoothie that’s high antioxidants and low in sugar. Frozen berries are easy to find at the grocery store, affordable and work great in this Spinach Berry Smoothie.

If you’re new to blending spinach and berries in a smoothie, this recipe is perfect for you. The combination of blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries is delicious AND hides the spinach nicely. Your smoothie will look purple-ish and taste like a berry smoothie, yet you can smile wide knowing you snuck a whole cup of spinach in here, too!

Labeled smoothie ingredients: spinach, almond milk, banana, and frozen mixed berries.

Ingredients Youโ€™ll Need

You only need four ingredients and a high-speed blender to make this creamy spinach berry smoothie:

  • Spinach: Spinach is loaded with fiber and nutrients to help my body process the natural sugar in fruit, as well as get in an extra veggie. If you don’t have spinach, you can swap with baby kale or another leafy greens of your choice.
  • Almond milk: This non-dairy milk adds some creaminess and protein to the smoothie. If you’re new to buying almond milk, check out the Best Almond Milk Brands or try making your own homemade almond milk to get a high-protein version that tastes amazing.
  • Frozen mixed berries: A bag of frozen mixed fruit is an easy way to get a variety of berries without all the washing and chopping. Most mixed berries contains strawberries, blackberries and raspberries.
  • Banana: The banana adds some sweetness and extra creaminess to the smoothie. You can also use half a banana and 1/4 avocado if you want to decrease the sugars and still get a creamy smoothie.

Fresh Berries vs Frozen Berries

I get asked often which is better: fresh or frozen berries. Honestly, both work great in smoothies.

I personally use frozen berries most often because they save me time when making a smoothie. Frozen berries are picked at peak freshness and then flash-frozen to preserve nutrients. No need to wash or chopโ€” I just toss it straight in the blender.

When fresh berries are on sale (think: summer), I’ll stock up and freeze them myself… that’s if it don’t eat them all first. Bottomline, don’t go crazy trying to buy fresh berries if they’re outta season or expensive. It’s just not worth it and they won’t even taste great being out of season. Head to the freezer section for frozen fruit that’s a great price.

Smoothie Blending Tip

This spinach berry smoothie includes a banana, which increases the amount of sugar. If you’re concerned about your blood sugar levels, you can easily adjust for that by adding a scoop of plant-based protein powder. This will increase the fiber, protein and healthy fats to slow down the absorption of the fruit sugars to create long-lasting energy.

How to Make Spinach Berry Smoothie

  1. Blend the spinach and almond milk on high speed until there are no leafy chunks left. Depending on the kind of blender you use, this might take awhile. Be patient, because it’s totally worth it!
  2. Add the mixed berries and banana next. Blend on high speed until smooth.

Blending twice might sound like extra work, yet it actually helps your blender focus on eliminating chunks and giving you the smoothest blend possible. If you’re using a high-end blender, like a Vitamix Blender, you can combine all the ingredients at once to save time.

Tip for BLENDING FROZEN Berries

Allow frozen berries to sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes to defrost slight before blending. This helps ensure a more even consistency and reduces strain on your blender.

It was good, but a little watery. I think Iโ€™d like it better with almond milk.

Tasty! I was a little sad that there was no almond milk like yesterday, but once I took a sip I remembered the water-based ones arenโ€™t bad either

Mixed berries are not my favorite. But this smoothie is good. I think Iโ€™d like it better with almond milk, to make it creamy.

  8. No problem getting this one down! My only complaint is that my berry blend contains blackberries and the seeds make me crazy! Iโ€™ll have to watch out for that the next time I purchase a berry blend.

I loved this smoothie! The fact that it had mixed berries made it one of my favorites this week, since any berrybia my favorite. The color was more brown than green, but who cares!
