Using Veggies in a Smoothie
First I wanna talk about the cauliflower in the room. If you already read the ingredients for this smoothie and that one threw you off, don’t fear! I know adding cauliflower to fruit smoothies might sound odd, but it is a super mild veggie that adds nutrition + creaminess.
When using frozen cauliflower, I don’t even notice the flavor of it in my smoothie! While using fresh can produce a different taste, this smoothie tastes like bananas and strawberries all the way.
I often throw veggies in my smoothies like carrot, sweet potato, cauliflower, leafy greens, cabbage and celery. They each provide a whole host of health benefits, as well as blend seamlessly into smoothies with a variety of other ingredients.
Try tossing one of these vegetables into your next smoothie, and then let me know how it worked out!
How to Make a Strawberry Banana Smoothie
This smoothie is even easier to blend up than a traditional green smoothie, because you don’t need to blend the liquid and leafy greens first. Just toss all the ingredients into your blender and blend! A high-powered blender will break down the chia seeds as well as the strawberry seeds.
Ingredient Swaps
If you want to make this smoothie a little lower in sugar, then swap the measurements for the banana and cauliflower. Using 1/2 a banana and 1 cup of cauliflower will lower the sugar by 5 grams.
Looking for a berry smoothie with no strawberries? Swap in blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, cherries, etc to blend up an equally delicious smoothie.
Oat milk, cashew milk, or hemp milk are great stand-ins for the almond milk, as well as refrigerated coconut milk.
If adding cauliflower to this strawberry banana smoothie isn’t possible, then add a half cup of vegan yogurt instead.
Protein boost for smoothies
If I’m blending this smoothie for breakfast, then I want to make sure it has enough protein. I like breakfasts smoothies that keep me full for the morning.
Adding 1 serving of my homemade protein powder will give this strawberry banana smoothie recipe an additional 10 grams of plant-powered protein, as well as 4 grams of healthy fats. That turns this smoothie into long lasting energy without any sugar crash!
Strawberry Banana Smoothie Benefits
Regular consumption of fresh strawberries has been linked to less inflammation and lower risk of heart disease. The antioxidants in strawberries are a great defense against various types of cancer. Cauliflower contains vitamin C, folate, and potassium. It’s definitely not just for looks in this recipe!
Chia seeds are a superfood with protein as well as healthy fat. These tiny seeds gel up when added to liquid, and help thicken a smoothie as well as provide additional nutrition.

The Strawberry-Banana Smoothie was delicious and made a large smoothie. Very filling.
Love the flavors!! Strawberry/banana makes it taste like a treat!
I was skeptical about the cauliflower in a smoothie, but it was delicious and so filling. I had it early this morning, it is now lunch time, and I am not hungry!
Love this smoothie. I found I only need 1 banana. Itโs still plenty sweet and creamy.
Very tasty, I was hesitant about the cauliflower, but was pleasantly surprised.
(I have had a problem with digesting cauliflower in the past & have tried to avoid it).
My new Vitamix blender arrived yesterday, I tried it out with the Strawberry Banana Smoothie. It did a vanishing act on both the Cauliflower & Chia Seeds.
Strawberry milkshake anyone? This was very tasty, even with cauliflower in it (not my favorite vegetable). I always add the Smoothie Boost to make the drinks more of a meal, but I think this one would be fine without it. I made my own Almond milk and did not use anything but the almonds. There is no need for extra sweetness in this smoothie. The banana, cauliflower, and chia seeds give it the fluff and protein and sweetness needed. I was very pleased with the flavor.
I don’t usually use almond milk in my smoothies. I usually just use water. I didn’t think I’d like this one but I loved it. It tastes like strawberry ice cream. I have to get over my mental block that smoothies are only healthy with greens in them, but I know this smoothie is chock full of good stuff.
This was a delicious balance of sweet and filling. Iโm doing this challenge with my mom. We added the collagen powder and chia seeds. It was so smooth. If I hadnโt seen myself putting in the cauliflower I wouldโve never known it was in there.
Love this combo! Not too sweet, but helps satisfy the sweet tooth! Will definitely make again.
Day 2 rocking it. Added collagen and protein powder. Used one banana. Tasted really yummy even with the cauliflower. Surprisingly good!!!
It wasnโt as good as yesterday but still delicious and smooth. I think I miss the greens!
This smoothie was berry delicious! I added vanilla protein powder.
This smoothie is so yummy. I didn’t think I would like the cauliflower but I couldn’t even taste it.
Loved this one.. will definitely make again
So delicious! Such a classic flavor. Used raw cow milk and no cauliflower because that’s how I roll. YUM!
This smoothie is good, but probably not one Iโll crave. I was surprised how mellow the flavor was, honestly I mostly only taste strawberries. And the frozen strawberry taste, not sweet fresh strawberries. Itโs very easy to drink, just not super flavorful. I may add a natural sweetener and some vanilla if I make this smoothie again.
Very smooth. Perhaps from the cauliflower? I would like to try cauliflower in another recipe but this didn’t have much flavor. Definitely couldn’t taste the strawberries.
Hi Kathy! Cauliflower can def up the creamy factor in a smoothie, so your instinct is correct. If you’d like more berry flavor, you could always add more berries or try fresh or frozen instead depending on what you used the first go-round.
Great with a capital G! Best way ever to consume cauliflower.
I was a little nervous about cauliflower in my smoothie but you couldnโt even taste it. Delicious!
This was a new one for us; usually, I’d not have one of these during the week, when I normally have green ones and keep the special/richer ones for the weekend days. I only made it on a Tuesday as it is part of the challenge. It was ok, I hesitated between 2 and 3 stars. It was not not nice, just ok. Not one I’d do again, except, I do have a bag of frozen cauliflower in my freezer now, so might incorporate it in our rotation again. It was blah, nothing special.
