Using Veggies in a Smoothie
First I wanna talk about the cauliflower in the room. If you already read the ingredients for this smoothie and that one threw you off, don’t fear! I know adding cauliflower to fruit smoothies might sound odd, but it is a super mild veggie that adds nutrition + creaminess.
When using frozen cauliflower, I don’t even notice the flavor of it in my smoothie! While using fresh can produce a different taste, this smoothie tastes like bananas and strawberries all the way.
I often throw veggies in my smoothies like carrot, sweet potato, cauliflower, leafy greens, cabbage and celery. They each provide a whole host of health benefits, as well as blend seamlessly into smoothies with a variety of other ingredients.
Try tossing one of these vegetables into your next smoothie, and then let me know how it worked out!
How to Make a Strawberry Banana Smoothie
This smoothie is even easier to blend up than a traditional green smoothie, because you don’t need to blend the liquid and leafy greens first. Just toss all the ingredients into your blender and blend! A high-powered blender will break down the chia seeds as well as the strawberry seeds.
Ingredient Swaps
If you want to make this smoothie a little lower in sugar, then swap the measurements for the banana and cauliflower. Using 1/2 a banana and 1 cup of cauliflower will lower the sugar by 5 grams.
Looking for a berry smoothie with no strawberries? Swap in blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, cherries, etc to blend up an equally delicious smoothie.
Oat milk, cashew milk, or hemp milk are great stand-ins for the almond milk, as well as refrigerated coconut milk.
If adding cauliflower to this strawberry banana smoothie isn’t possible, then add a half cup of vegan yogurt instead.
Protein boost for smoothies
If I’m blending this smoothie for breakfast, then I want to make sure it has enough protein. I like breakfasts smoothies that keep me full for the morning.
Adding 1 serving of my homemade protein powder will give this strawberry banana smoothie recipe an additional 10 grams of plant-powered protein, as well as 4 grams of healthy fats. That turns this smoothie into long lasting energy without any sugar crash!
Strawberry Banana Smoothie Benefits
Regular consumption of fresh strawberries has been linked to less inflammation and lower risk of heart disease. The antioxidants in strawberries are a great defense against various types of cancer. Cauliflower contains vitamin C, folate, and potassium. It’s definitely not just for looks in this recipe!
Chia seeds are a superfood with protein as well as healthy fat. These tiny seeds gel up when added to liquid, and help thicken a smoothie as well as provide additional nutrition.

This smoothie was good, but I like it a bit sweeter, so I ad a bit of maple syrup and it comes out nice. This one tastes like a strawberry milkshake and is very creamy too. I also added some pumpkin seeds and some collagen powder as well.
Mine was a pretty color, but not near as vibrant as the ones in the blog. Surprised at the cauliflower! Great addition, though; could not taste it. Used riced frozen cauliflower so it was easy to measure. Consistency was thick and creamy. Speaking of taste, I would prefer more strawberry taste to this one, so it would match the beautiful color!
Very smooth. First smoothie with chia seeds. Vitamix did it’s job and not a seed in sight. Cook
The banana strawberry smoothie was great. It filled me up and kept me satisfied until around 5pm. The taste and consistency was perfect and I loved knowing I was receivign so many nutrients for lunch! Thanks for the recipe; will definitely be keepin it.
The strawberry banana smoothie tasted light and airy. This was the first time I made a smoothie with cauliflower. I couldn’t taste the cauliflower which was good while adding texture and extra nutrients.
This was yummy, but alot! I added a scoop of rolled oats, 2 scoops of vanilla protein powder and a cup of spinach!
I prepared last night by freezing fresh cauliflower, then woke up early this morning so that I could make this for the hubby before he went off to work. With the addition of a little cinnamon and doubling the recipe, I followed it down to the T….It was wonderful and a success! My toddler drank everything today, the full 5 ounces I gave him! Whereas yesterday he only drank 2 ounces of the green smoothie. I don’t think he noticed the cauliflower at all. With the weight of the chia and banana I think we will stay full for a while. What a wonderful synergy of ingredients. Thank you! ♥️
Hi foodie friends!
I tried this drink and was shocked at how the cauliflower blended so well into this drink. Perfect way to sneak in veggies into my kids diet. I substituted the almond milk for vanilla oat milk which made it creamier and more flavorful.
I like this smoothie a lot, but the chia seeds may be a bit much for some people (like my husband )
This smoothie was surprisingly delicious and filling. I was skeptical about the cauliflower but I did not taste it at all. It was a tasty, lightly sweet treat.
Tastes very good, but next time, I will use frozen bananas to make it more icy. I am also missing the high sweet flavor from retail shops that sell strawberry banana smoothies. I may add a date to sweeten it up next time … or, summer strawberries may be sweeter!
OMG..so good! This hardly tastes like it is good for you
Another yummy one. As mentioned before, I would probably use only one banana. You can’t taste the cauliflower and the chia seeds are a great way to help you feel full. This is really good one for breakfast!
Another great smoothie. Didn’t notice the cauliflowers at all.
This is my second day of the smoothie challenge. I liked this one but not as much as the first one which was so tropical tasting. Going forward, I would decrease the banana a little bit as that was the predominate flavor and it is not my favorite fruit flavor. Besides ground Chia seed I also added ground flax and some psyllium as I find that combo keeps me feeling full the longest. As I am always looking for ways to get more greens in my diet I did add a handful of baby spinach. This altered the color a bit but not really the flavor as I tried it before and after adding the spinach.
I think maybe my frozen strawberries were lacking flavor. I’ll have to try this recipe again another time. The cauliflower is a great addition to give this smoothie a nutritional boost!
This was good.. I did add some vanilla protein to it.. I needed it a littler more sweet.. .
I loved this one! My hubby tried a sip of mine and said “eh, I would drink it if I had to. I probably would’ve liked it better if I hadn’t known there was cauliflower in it”. He doesn’t eat many veggies AT ALL and is usually opposed to trying any new ones unless they are snuck in something and he doesn’t know about it lol!
Yum another delicious smoothie. You wouldn’t even know there is cauliflower in there.
So yummyyyyy!! Couldn’t even taste the cauliflower and was nice and thick!!
