Strawberry Banana Green Smoothie

Published on 8.3.2012 by Jen Hansard

RECIPE CARD LEAVE REVIEW

There was a time when I made this Strawberry Banana Green Smoothie almost every day for a year. I guess I am kinda like my dad— when you find something that works, why change it up? It only has five ingredients (and one being water), doesn't take much food prep, and tastes very yummy (seriously).

It also uses ingredients that are easy to find all year round in the produce + freezer sections of most grocery stores. The key to make this healthy green smoothie habit stick, is making it easy and affordable. This Strawberry Banana Smoothie hits both of those on the head.

Kid-Friendly Healthy Recipe

My kids even ask for it! It's such a proud moment as a parent when kids are craving fruits and veggies over processed foods.

Clare Hansard drinking a strawberry banana green smoothie with a paper straw | Simple Green Smoothies

The pic above is of my daughter Clare when she was 3 years old. She would ask for this smoothie all the time! I get a little teary eyed seeing her this little— she started 5th grade this year!!! Now, my kids wanting a spinach smoothie doesn't happen every day, but it does still happen a LOT! Hope you enjoy one of my tried and true green smoothie recipes!

The reason why I combine quite a few fruits into this smoothie is to make sure we're getting a variety of vitamins and minerals. My whole goal with green smoothies is to treat them as a daily vitamin to keep our immune systems strong and our body healthy. It's been 8 years of drinking these now, and we're still going strong!

Tip: Thanks to the florida-grown blueberries, this green smoothie is more like a purple smoothie, which is great for kids and those who are afraid of the "green" color.

Here's a few more plant-based recipes my kids love from the blog...

We've combined four of our favorite fruits for this smoothie - and it's a yummy one! The flavors are bright and sweet, and it's full of fruity goodness. As far as nutrition goes, this smoothie offers up a bundle of antioxidants from vitamin C-rich oranges and strawberries, to potassium-loaded bananas, and anthrocyanin-packed blueberries. And don't forget all the vitamin K and iron in the spinach.

So tasty! This was like an Orange Julius but way better for you. Packed a yummy punch! The only problem I had was that I should have let it all thaw a bit more before blending. Had to add a little extra water. Once things got going it was great though.

This smoothie was so good! I love using oranges because it’s like adding orange juice but it still has all the fiber and healthy things juice doesn’t have. I also think the consistency was perfect!!! I didn’t have to add more liquid to thin it out. It wasn’t to thick or too thin! The color was nice also. I know sometimes adding the greens with strawberries creates a funny color but ours was vibrant! I was too excited to drink it and forgot o snap a picture.

Would you tell me how to remove seeds as mentioned in an orange? Can't I just section the orange after peeling
and toss in my vitamix? It would take so long to remove seeds, right? I take care of Hospice patient & do not have time
to remove seed or wash greens(I use triple washed hoping it is ok...wish I had time to wash those also)...thanks!

      Hey Nancy,

If your orange contains seeds then that is totally fine and you can still add them to your smoothie. Your blender should blend them up along with your smoothie.

      Hope that helps!

⭐️ Wanna make it everyday.... almost!
⭐️ At first, the spinach was all I could taste but I think it has do with our blender! ....the fruit didn’t thoroughly blend with the spinach, but thank God the blender got it together and started blending as it’s supposed to!
⭐️ For brain nutrition, seeds were added...at the end! Did not effect goodness of taste!
⭐️ ...Got breakfast for tomorrow! Thanks for the tip on how to save your smoothies!
⭐️ Had all ingredients at home before making the smoothie! Didn’t have to go out and buy anything extra... how AWE-MAZING is God?!?

Question: Can you provide that measurement in grams for 2 cups of spinach please? Sometimes I find volume based measurements for leafy greens difficult, because so much space is taken up with air with raw, leafy greens. Thanks!

      Hey Jamie,

We think the best way to measure 2 cups of spinach is with 2 big handfuls. The more greens you can pack into your smoothie the better!

This is a great smoothie recipe. I am not familiar with the apps you mentioned for tracking nutritional info but I tried inputting the ingredients into My Fitness Pal online since they had a food search option, and since this recipe is good for 2 servings, it looks like this will run about 1000 calories per serving. It's delicious but wow, this is good for 1.5 meals!

      Hi Kathy,

We personally don't count calories or focus on the numbers too much, so we don't include them in our recipes at this time. You'll find that when you consume more nourishing whole fruits and veggies, you will not only feel full longer, but you'll also have lessened cravings for high-calorie, nutritionally empty foods. So in the end it balances out. But we know many people would like to have this information.

      Hi Brittany,

You definitely can! We suggest peeling + segmenting your orange. Then lay your orange segments out on a parchment lined baking sheet in a single layer and place in the freezer till frozen. Once frozen you can transfer your orange segments into a ziploc or freezer safe container for storage.

    Hi there
What a beautiful website. I heard you speaking on some podcasts and had to come over and check out your bog/site. Really impressive. One thing I'm a bit confused over though. For a kids smoothie you are recommending one serve 1 orange and one banana and 1 cup of berries. Taking average sized pieces of fruit this comes to over 45 teaspoons of sugar. Even if we go for conservative amount and assume small size fruit it would still be unlikely to be less than 30 grams of sugar. And the greens on the smoothie is just 1 cup. Which when wilted down is really more like 1/8 cup. I'm interested to understand how you consider this to be a "green smoothie" and advisable for a child given current recommendations as to sugar intake. (And for sure I realise this is not "added sugar" but indeed the body will treat all sugar the same once it's broken down.) Interested in your reply. Thanks very much. Claire

      Hi Claire,

Great question! When sharing green smoothies with little ones we suggest starting with an 8oz snack size serving. The majority of our recipes have 3 cups of fruit in it. This recipe has additional fruit because we're relying on the two oranges to provide fresh juice as our liquid base (Great for introducing little taste buds to green smoothies). For adults, when you drink 16oz of our green smoothie recipe you will be meeting, or just under your daily intake for fruit. If you feel like any of our recipes have too much fruit, feel free to do 2 cups of fruit in each smoothie with 3 cups of leafy greens. Hope that helps. 🙂

While yes, the main source of calories in fruit is sugar - those sugars are surrounded by fibre in the fruits cellular structure. Therefore you do not get the same surge of fructose that would take a hit on the liver or an increase of glucose that would cause a surge in insulin. It's the added sugars that are the problem.

WOW!! I'm on day 3 of having a green smoothie (definitely not dieting, but loving how tasty these are!) and I just made this one. I feel like I can sip fast enough. I only made it with one banana since I ate one with breakfast but still super yummy. I would eat this as a popsicle in the summer! I do have a question. How long can a smoothie be saved in the fridge? I usually separate into two servings and save one serving in a mason jar for the next day. I wanted to plan ahead and make several. Have you tried that? How did it work? Thank you!!!

    Hey!
I did this one today and it was delicious, it just had a lot of short, stringy pieces (I'm thinking from the oranges or medium pulp oj I added). I also used kale instead of spinach, so I don't know what caused this for sure. Is there any way to smooth it out more, or is that how it is no matter what?

FYI I have a new Blendtec, so any tricks or use recommendations would be appreciated!

      Hi Ashley,

You're right!! The pieces you found in your green smoothie were probably from the oranges. A great way to breakdown the oranges in your green smoothie is to blend them first with your leafy greens + liquid base. Once blended to a juice consistency add your remaining ingredients.

      Hope this helps! 🙂
