Smoothie bowls are a fun way to change up the daily smoothie routine. They are thicker so you can use a spoon, and you have the freedom to go wild with toppings. This bowl is super simple to make with only three base ingredients:

  • Fresh orange: This serves as a liquid AND a fruit… win-win!
  • Frozen strawberries: Frozen produce helps make a smoothie bowl thick and creamy. You can freeze fresh strawberries or grab some already frozen ones.
  • Frozen mango: I sometimes snack on frozen mango chunks; they’re just so good! They also add extra creaminess + sweetness in a mildly flavorful way.

I often add in a handful of leafy green vegetables or a plant-based protein powder to add in extra fiber, nutrients, protein and healthy fats.

Most days, I use a cereal bowl, yet I really do love using coconut bowls to complete the beachy vibes. Coconut bowls are easy to fill and deep enough to hold a thick smoothie and pile high the toppings.

How to Make Tropical Smoothie Bowl

  1. Pick a base: You can use any smoothie recipe as your base, yet the key is making sure it’s thick enough. I like to use 1/2 cup liquid (either coconut water or blending a whole orange will give you this). Then I’ll add 1 cup frozen fruit. Peaches, mango, pineapple are staples in my house.

    You’ll need to use your smoothie blenders‘ tamper to push the ingredients into the blade. When making a thick smoothie, it takes more work on your end (but it’s so worth it!).
  2. Pick your toppings: I’m all about variety when it comes to flavors and textures. So I like to use a mixture of kiwi, mango, granola, coconut flakes and berries. Yet there’s no right or wrong way to do this— just pick whole food ingredients that you enjoy.
  3. Balanced bowls: To make sure you’re getting a balanced nutrition, try to include one healthy fat + one protein source. This can be added to your base or as a topping. Seeds, avocado, plant-based protein power, coconut flakes, etc are all options.

Tropical Smoothie Bowl

Ingredients  

  • 1 orange peeled
  • 1 ½ cup strawberries frozen
  • ½ cup mango frozen
  • ¼ cup water if needed

Topping Suggestions

Instructions 

  • Place orange in blender followed by the frozen strawberries and mango.
  • Blend, stopping to scrape down sides, until smooth. Feel free to add water to help it blend, yet you want it to be thick. The texture should be similar to soft serve ice cream.
  • Transfer to a bowl and top with desired toppings.

    Yummy and fresh!!!!!
    Simple recipe with 3 ingredients is a plus! No added sugar … all fruit sugars is great! But too acidic for me … my tongue started to break out…. So I put mine back in blender and added tsp of raw honey to cut the acid. It did the trick! Avocado wld probably work too.
    Will make again with acid adjusted….
    Any other suggestions as to how to make it less acidic?

    1. Hi Evelyn, to make this smoothie bowl less acidic, I would suggest reducing the amount of orange in the recipe to half. Maybe blend in a banana or avocado (great idea!) with it. Way to go for trying it and making it work for you!

    My Tropical Smoothie Bowl Is So Beautiful And Delicious 🙂 My Smoothie Bowl Was Thick And Creamy, I Froze Both My Mango And The Orange A Few Hours Before I Used Them. I Added Hemp And Chia Seeds For More Protein. I Added Blueberries, Raspberries And Coconut Flakes To My Bowl, So Beautiful 🙂 I Look Forward To Making This Smoothie Again.

    Great flavor. I added a handful of greens and a scoop of unflavored collagen/protein powder and some flaxseed, but of course!

    A little tart for my palate but very refreshing in this 100 degree plus weather we are having in Texas!
    I may change to adding peaches when they are available here. I added coconut, dark chocolate chips, pumpkin seeds and fresh mint leaves.

    Very refreshing! I blended mine a little too long but was still spoonable! Topped with blueberries, strawberries, mango, kiwi and a little coconut.

    I blended all ingredients except the granola. I pour the mixture over the granola and ate it like cereal. I drank the rest of the mixture, which was fabulous. I love fruits and. veggies, so these smoothies are not hard to take or make. I just love this challenge. Its. yummy!

    Delicious!! I live in SoCal and smoothie bowls are a staple in my house. We often have them once a week when the weather gets really hot.
    I can’t do strawberries but like any smoothie you can substitute it out with just about any other frozen fruit or berry you like.
    My fav is to blend kale or spinach and a touch of water first, make it as smooth as possible, and then go in with the frozen fruit. If you get frozen (or even fresh) pitaya, it makes it the most beautiful pink color.
    Mine never quite look like the perfect demo photos but they still taste great, and the kids love having “dessert” for dinner.
