Why You’ll Love It
Summer is overflowing with nutrient-dense produce. Take advantage of these ruby red, antioxidant-rich ingredients!
- Ready in 5 minutes. Toss everything in the blender, hit blend, and you’re sipping a refreshing smoothie in less time than it takes to slice the fruit. You can also check out my recommended smoothie blenders for the creamiest results.
- Peak summer produce. Juicy watermelon, ripe strawberries, and sweet cherries shine when they’re in season, giving this smoothie bright flavor and natural sweetness without added sugar.
- Hydrating and refreshing. Watermelon’s high water content helps support hydration, while lime adds a crisp, citrusy finish that keeps each sip light and energizing.
- Packed with real benefits. Strawberries and cherries bring fiber and antioxidants for heart and immune support, while watermelon delivers lycopene, a powerful antioxidant linked to heart health and cellular protection.

Watermelon Smoothie Ingredients
- Watermelon (fresh, chopped). Choose a heavy melon with a creamy yellow field spot for the sweetest flavor. Seedless makes prep quicker, but either works. This is how I cut melon.
- Strawberries (fresh or frozen). Look for bright red berries with green tops and no white shoulders. If using fresh, freeze extras at peak ripeness for future smoothies, or portion them into frozen meal prep smoothie packs so they’re ready to blend anytime.
- Cherries (fresh or frozen). Deep red cherries are usually the sweetest and richest in antioxidants. If buying fresh, pit and freeze them on a sheet pan so they’re ready to blend.
- Lime (fresh, peeled). Pick a lime that feels heavy for its size and has a slight give when squeezed. This usually means it’s juicier and more flavorful.

How to Make a Watermelon Smoothie
- Add ingredients to the blender. Place the chopped watermelon, frozen strawberries, frozen cherries, peeled lime, plant-based protein powder (if using), and chia seeds into a high-speed blender.
- Blend until smooth. Blend on high until the smoothie is completely smooth and creamy. Add a splash of water if needed to help it blend.
- Serve and enjoy. Pour into glasses and sprinkle extra chia seeds on top, if desired. Sip right away for the freshest flavor and best texture.

Recipe Tips
- Since watermelon is over 90% water by weight, you don’t need to add any extra liquid or ice to this smoothie.
- Use seedless watermelon for this recipe. No need to spend all day picking out watermelon seeds!
- Using frozen cherries and frozen strawberries rather than fresh ones yields a cool and frosty drink. If using fresh, add ice cubes to the blender.
- Serve this smoothie immediately after making it. The longer it sits, the more the watermelon separates from the other ingredients.

Notes
- Use seedless watermelon if you don’t have time to pick out the seeds before blending.
- If using frozen watermelon, thaw ahead of time or add 1/2 cup liquid to help it blend well.
- To lower the natural sugar, swap the cherries out for blueberries or raspberries, or add in homemade protein powder to help your body process the natural sugar.
- Feel free to add any of these low sugar fruits to change up the flavor and make it your own.

Yes! When using any kind of melon in a smoothie, I cut back on the amount of liquid. Watermelon contains enough water on its own that you don’t need any more liquid. Also, don’t forget to remove the seeds!
Watermelon acts as both the liquid and fruit in a smoothie. If you freeze the watermelon, be sure to add extra liquid to help it blend well.

It was good! The lime added a nice counterpoint to the other flavors. Definitely a nice drink for a hot summer day.
This is a new favorite! Great tasting and super easy.
This is really more of a juice drink than a smoothie…it’s very thin. It needs something to thicken it up. Nice flavor, though
Hi, thank you for the recipe… It was very refreshing and I believe I would have really enjoyed it on a hot day even more. I made mine from frozen as I prepped the smoothies for the challenge on the weekend… that being said, both my daugthers and I really enjoyed this refreshing smoothie… It is the first time I have used watermelon in a smoothie and I will definitely add it to more in the future.
My new summer favorite. Light and tastey. I didn’t have frozen fruit so mine was more of a juice but still delicious.
The flavours were very subtle. It grew on me. It would be super refreshing on a hot day.
I didn’t read through the recipe and put the chia seeds into the smoothie. I liked it! I also added collagen powder as my protein, and I felt it went well. The flavors of the fruit went well together, and it was a filling, nutritious lunch!
Loved the flavor of the watermelon and cherries together! So refreshing and tasty. Also loved the minimal ingredients making it super fast and easy for the busy summertime months.
Very refreshing! I added a few mint leaves too. Perfect balance of sweet and tart.
Very thin. Nice mild taste. Refreshing. Easy to make. Also good with a pinch of salt added. I drank it all immediately.
This is the best smoothie I’ve had in quite some time! Apparently, I’m still learning what blends well with what!! Don’t ask ¡. Thank you for the start of this wonderful 10 day challenge!!
See my review above.
I wanted to love this watermelon smoothie, but it had too much lime for my taste. I think I would prefer to leave out the lime and maybe add kiwi instead of the cherries.
Loved this refreshing smoothie! It feels like truly like a drink you’d crave on a hot summers day…I liked the slushy texture – it was a nice change to have a greens free option and also nice to have a change up from the creamy texture a banana or avo adds. Two thumbs up
I liked it!! I did add spinach (I usually do, to most recipes, just to add greens) and also some protein powder. After reading some of the comments early this morning before I made it, I was a little bit worried about it being too sweet… But I think the spinach helped and I also added an extra squeeze of lime! With the cherry & watermelon, I love that lime kick. Overall, very refreshing this AM here in hot Alabama and after a morning run! ☺️
Way to get that morning run in, Nancy! Glad the Summer Watermelon Smoothie was a refreshing treat for you!
Tasty. I doubled the strawberries and used fresh, not frozen. Next time I’ll squeeze the lime rather than peel. It didn’t blend well.
Really enjoyed this drink. Also thought mint would be a nice addition.
This smoothie was really refreshing! I used blueberries instead of cherries, added chia seed as well.
I always have frozen berries and chia seeds around, so this was a sweet twist on a recipe I already love.
OMG that is one of my favorites. Very refreshing cherries add a nice tartness to watermelon freshness.
Delicious and refreshing for this warm day. We used the cherries our strawberries are gone because they are farmers market strawberries. The taste of cherries was a good balance of sweetness with the refreshing g yellow watermelon.
I love watermelon
Adding the cherries and strawberries seemed to give a depth to the flavor while letting the watermelon be the star
I did add some mint, chia seeds and vanilla protein powder to make it a meal
I will be making a lot of these this summer!
