5 Watermelon Smoothie Tips

  1. Since watermelon is over 90% water by weight, you donโ€™t need to add any extra liquid or ice to this smoothie.
  2. Use seedless watermelon for this recipe. No need to spend all day picking out watermelon seeds!
  3. Using frozen cherries and frozen strawberries rather than fresh ones yields a cool and frosty drink. If using fresh, add ice cubes to the blender.
  4. Serve this smoothie immediately after making it. The longer it sits, the more the watermelon separates from the other ingredients.
  5. Want popsicles? Freeze the smoothie in freezer pop molds to make homemade popsicles for the kids.

Health Benefits of a Summer Smoothie

Summer is overflowing with nutrient-dense produce. Take advantage of these ruby red, antioxidant-rich ingredients!

Watermelon

Watermelon has high water content, so itโ€™s the perfect fruit for hydration. All that water doesnโ€™t mean itโ€™s lacking in powerful antioxidants. Watermelon actually has about 40% more lycopene than raw tomatoes. Lycopene can help curb your risk of cancer and heart disease as well as offers some protective effects against damaging UV rays.

Strawberries

Strawberries add filling fiber to this watermelon smoothie as well as vitamin C and other beneficial antioxidants. Blood sugar regulation, reducing heart disease risk and boosting immunity are just some of the health benefits of adding strawberries to your diet.

Cherries

Cherries are also high in fiber and loaded with antioxidants. These powerful antioxidants may protect against cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes as well as Alzheimerโ€™s. Anti-inflammatory compounds in cherries may help reduce muscle pain and damage.

Watermelon Smoothie FAQs

What fruit mixes well with watermelon?

My watermelon smoothie blends cherries, watermelon, strawberries and lime. It’s super refreshing and antioxidant-loaded!

Is it okay to blend watermelon?

Yes! When using any kind of melon in a smoothie, I cut back on the amount of liquid. Watermelon contains enough water on its own that you don’t need any more liquid. Also, don’t forget to remove the seeds!

Can I freeze watermelon?

Watermelon acts as both the liquid and fruit in a smoothie. If you freeze the watermelon, be sure to add extra liquid to help it blend well.

It as advertised; it’s really delicious and refreshing. It is just right for a summer day. I will definitely make it again.

I struggled with this one, I had trouble blending it with my non powerful blender as I froze the watermelon with the cherries and strawberries. I defrosted the frozen fruit an hour to blend. At first it reminded me of a margarita slushie? With the watermelon slight taste snd lime in the background but when I added chia seeds snd protein powder I could not taste the lime, it was a creamy slightly vanilla slight watermelon taste.

The flavour was quite mild, I thought it would have been more flavourful

      1. Sorry you struggled with this one, Cristina. If your fruit is ever too frozen, you can add a little bit of water, although with this one you’d have to be careful so that it doesn’t get too watery since the watermelon liquifies, too. Way to go for overcoming the obstacles and following through on day 2!! It sounds like it ended up being delicious! Margarita slushie doesn’t sound too bad ๐Ÿ˜‰

We tried todayโ€™s smoothie challenge. It is a little bland. I was hoping with the selection of fruit that more of the flavors would come through. I followed the suggestion and added some chia seeds and one scoop of plant based protein powder. We thought that it was good, but felt that it would be better if more of the fruit flavors came through. Thank you.

Refreshing and light! I do not love cherries, so I doubled the strawberries…still yummy! Perfect smoothie for summer! This one is a keeper for me!

I usually stay away from sweeter smoothies, but this was delicious. The bit of lime balanced out the sweetness.

Absolutely love this recipe! So refreshing. I did swap hemp hearts for chia seeds and threw in a few blackberries that were reaching their prime. Very yummy!

Watermelon is the one fruit I just can’t eat, so I swapped it out for cantaloupe. Loved the cherries & strawberries, and kept the strawberry tops as well as added some spinach.

    1. Cantaloupe is a perfect substitute for watermelon! Great choice, Erin!

I made it as a few small popsicles and put them in my freezer to get to take them on the go. I also used them at home for a pick-me-up and an encouragement to vacuum and do a workout video on a super-hot day! Soo good and hit the spot, right where I needed it!

    1. Hi April! That’s awesome that your Summer Watermelon Popsicles help motivate you to get your workout in! You rawk!

This smoothie was absolutely delicious. I actually doubled it and drank the entire smoothie for lunch. Will be enjoying this one all summer. I love watermelon, cherries and limes or lemons in my smoothies.

I really enjoyed the taste of this smoothie. I did add collagen powder, but maybe should have also added an additional protein powder, since is was a meal replacement for me. Will definitely make again!

Absolutely loved how refreshing this smoothie was. It felt very spa like to me. I replaced the lime wit lemon do to an allergy and it was still very delicious.

Loved this recipe with the added lime. I subbed wild blueberries for cherries (canโ€™t have cherries) and it was great.

  14. Unfortunately I’m allergic to watermelon – but it looks delicious!
I threw in a cutie instead.
