5 Watermelon Smoothie Tips
- Since watermelon is over 90% water by weight, you donโt need to add any extra liquid or ice to this smoothie.
- Use seedless watermelon for this recipe. No need to spend all day picking out watermelon seeds!
- Using frozen cherries and frozen strawberries rather than fresh ones yields a cool and frosty drink. If using fresh, add ice cubes to the blender.
- Serve this smoothie immediately after making it. The longer it sits, the more the watermelon separates from the other ingredients.
- Want popsicles? Freeze the smoothie in freezer pop molds to make homemade popsicles for the kids.
Health Benefits of a Summer Smoothie
Summer is overflowing with nutrient-dense produce. Take advantage of these ruby red, antioxidant-rich ingredients!
Watermelon
Watermelon has high water content, so itโs the perfect fruit for hydration. All that water doesnโt mean itโs lacking in powerful antioxidants. Watermelon actually has about 40% more lycopene than raw tomatoes. Lycopene can help curb your risk of cancer and heart disease as well as offers some protective effects against damaging UV rays.
Strawberries
Strawberries add filling fiber to this watermelon smoothie as well as vitamin C and other beneficial antioxidants. Blood sugar regulation, reducing heart disease risk and boosting immunity are just some of the health benefits of adding strawberries to your diet.
Cherries
Cherries are also high in fiber and loaded with antioxidants. These powerful antioxidants may protect against cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes as well as Alzheimerโs. Anti-inflammatory compounds in cherries may help reduce muscle pain and damage.
Watermelon Smoothie FAQs
My watermelon smoothie blends cherries, watermelon, strawberries and lime. It’s super refreshing and antioxidant-loaded!
Yes! When using any kind of melon in a smoothie, I cut back on the amount of liquid. Watermelon contains enough water on its own that you don’t need any more liquid. Also, don’t forget to remove the seeds!
Watermelon acts as both the liquid and fruit in a smoothie. If you freeze the watermelon, be sure to add extra liquid to help it blend well.

I never would have thought of adding watermelon but that was delicious. Very light and refreshing. Perfect for a warm summer day.
Yuck to watermelon, or any type of melon. I made yesterday’s smoothie again for day 2.
Hubby says yum to the smoothie and with no added liquid, it turned out just right.
Very refreshing!
Delicious and refreshing!! Loved the lime in it ๐
I used tart frozen cherries so the smoothie was a little tart. I added a banana to it and I liked it better.
Love this smoothie. The watermelon makes it my favorite summer smoothie.
I really enjoyed this. The watermelon was an unexpected ingredient, and it tastes like summer! The only negative was I didn’t remove the membrane from the lime and I dont have a great blender. I will use juice instead next time.
This seemed more of a juice than a smoothie but it did taste ok. The lime caused it to be bitter. I added some squirts of key lime juice to it after blending in hopes of calming the bitterness down and increase the tartness.
Very refreshing but it was a dreary day in PA so I can’t wait to try it on a sunny day. Kids loved it!
Very refreshing – definitely one to keep on hand for the summer!!!
So so refreshing!
Not a big fan of watermelon but gave this smoothie a try anyways. Turned out to be so delicious and easy to make.
Really, Really good!!! Even my son liked it! That’s amazing!
I thought this was quite tasty but because I froze the watermelon I had to add a lot of water, which diluted the flavor. It would be good to note NOT to freeze the watermelon in advanced a la what you can do with most other smoothie recipes to help w prep.
I liked the freshness the lime gave the smoothie. Will definitely have this one again! Who doesn’t like watermelon??
What A Way To Start The Summer With Such A Delicious Smoothie, I Used A Seeded Melon Which Was So Sweet. I Added Chia Seeds And Hemp Hearts To Add Some Protein To My Smoothie. I Will Make This Again. ๐
This is so good. My husband loves watermelon and so this will be a new family favorite.
The cherries where expensive, but they made the smoothies. I put it in the fridge for a bit until the chia seed got soft. The whole time it was in there, all I could think about was how cool and refreshing it would be. I couldn’t stay to wait any long and I went and enjoyed the heck out of the drink. That’s another drink that goes in my smoothies file.
