Why You’ll Love It

Summer is overflowing with nutrient-dense produce. Take advantage of these ruby red, antioxidant-rich ingredients!

  • Ready in 5 minutes. Toss everything in the blender, hit blend, and you’re sipping a refreshing smoothie in less time than it takes to slice the fruit.
  • Peak summer produce. Juicy watermelon, ripe strawberries, and sweet cherries shine when they’re in season, giving this smoothie bright flavor and natural sweetness without added sugar.
  • Hydrating and refreshing. Watermelon’s high water content helps support hydration, while lime adds a crisp, citrusy finish that keeps each sip light and energizing.
  • Packed with real benefits. Strawberries and cherries bring fiber and antioxidants for heart and immune support, while watermelon delivers lycopene, a powerful antioxidant linked to heart health and cellular protection.

Watermelon Smoothie Ingredients

  • Watermelon (fresh, chopped). Choose a heavy melon with a creamy yellow field spot for the sweetest flavor. Seedless makes prep quicker, but either works.
  • Strawberries (fresh or frozen). Look for bright red berries with green tops and no white shoulders. If using fresh, freeze extras at peak ripeness for future smoothies.
  • Cherries (fresh or frozen). Deep red cherries are usually the sweetest and richest in antioxidants. If buying fresh, pit and freeze them on a sheet pan so they’re ready to blend.
  • Lime (fresh, peeled). Pick a lime that feels heavy for its size and has a slight give when squeezed. This usually means it’s juicier and more flavorful.

How to Make a Watermelon Smoothie

  1. Add ingredients to the blender. Place the chopped watermelon, frozen strawberries, frozen cherries, peeled lime, protein powder (if using), and chia seeds into a high-speed blender.
  2. Blend until smooth. Blend on high until the smoothie is completely smooth and creamy. Add a splash of water if needed to help it blend.
  3. Serve and enjoy. Pour into glasses and sprinkle extra chia seeds on top, if desired. Sip right away for the freshest flavor and best texture.

Recipe Tips

  1. Since watermelon is over 90% water by weight, you don’t need to add any extra liquid or ice to this smoothie.
  2. Use seedless watermelon for this recipe. No need to spend all day picking out watermelon seeds!
  3. Using frozen cherries and frozen strawberries rather than fresh ones yields a cool and frosty drink. If using fresh, add ice cubes to the blender.
  4. Serve this smoothie immediately after making it. The longer it sits, the more the watermelon separates from the other ingredients.

Notes

  • Use seedless watermelon if you don’t have time to pick out the seeds before blending.
  • If using frozen watermelon, thaw ahead of time or add 1/2 cup liquid to help it blend well.
  • To lower the natural sugar, swap the cherries out for blueberries or raspberries, or add in a plant based protein powder to help your body process the natural sugar.

What fruit mixes well with watermelon?

My watermelon smoothie blends cherries, watermelon, strawberries and lime. It’s super refreshing and antioxidant-loaded!

Is it okay to blend watermelon?

Yes! When using any kind of melon in a smoothie, I cut back on the amount of liquid. Watermelon contains enough water on its own that you don’t need any more liquid. Also, don’t forget to remove the seeds!

Can I freeze watermelon?

Watermelon acts as both the liquid and fruit in a smoothie. If you freeze the watermelon, be sure to add extra liquid to help it blend well.

I never would have thought of adding watermelon but that was delicious. Very light and refreshing. Perfect for a warm summer day.

Yuck to watermelon, or any type of melon. I made yesterday’s smoothie again for day 2.

Hubby says yum to the smoothie and with no added liquid, it turned out just right.

I used tart frozen cherries so the smoothie was a little tart. I added a banana to it and I liked it better.

I really enjoyed this. The watermelon was an unexpected ingredient, and it tastes like summer! The only negative was I didn’t remove the membrane from the lime and I dont have a great blender. I will use juice instead next time.

This seemed more of a juice than a smoothie but it did taste ok. The lime caused it to be bitter. I added some squirts of key lime juice to it after blending in hopes of calming the bitterness down and increase the tartness.

Very refreshing but it was a dreary day in PA so I can’t wait to try it on a sunny day. Kids loved it!

Not a big fan of watermelon but gave this smoothie a try anyways. Turned out to be so delicious and easy to make.

I thought this was quite tasty but because I froze the watermelon I had to add a lot of water, which diluted the flavor. It would be good to note NOT to freeze the watermelon in advanced a la what you can do with most other smoothie recipes to help w prep.

The cherries where expensive, but they made the smoothies. I put it in the fridge for a bit until the chia seed got soft. The whole time it was in there, all I could think about was how cool and refreshing it would be. I couldn’t stay to wait any long and I went and enjoyed the heck out of the drink. That’s another drink that goes in my smoothies file.
