5 Watermelon Smoothie Tips

  1. Since watermelon is over 90% water by weight, you don’t need to add any extra liquid or ice to this smoothie.
  2. Use seedless watermelon for this recipe. No need to spend all day picking out watermelon seeds!
  3. Using frozen cherries and frozen strawberries rather than fresh ones yields a cool and frosty drink. If using fresh, add ice cubes to the blender.
  4. Serve this smoothie immediately after making it. The longer it sits, the more the watermelon separates from the other ingredients.
  5. Want popsicles? Freeze the smoothie in freezer pop molds to make homemade popsicles for the kids.

Watermelon Smoothie FAQs

What fruit mixes well with watermelon?

My watermelon smoothie blends cherries, watermelon, strawberries and lime. It's super refreshing and antioxidant-loaded!

Is it okay to blend watermelon?

Yes! When using any kind of melon in a smoothie, I cut back on the amount of liquid. Watermelon contains enough water on its own that you don't need any more liquid. Also, don't forget to remove the seeds!

Can I freeze watermelon?

Watermelon acts as both the liquid and fruit in a smoothie. If you freeze the watermelon, be sure to add extra liquid to help it blend well.

Health Benefits of a Summer Smoothie

Summer is overflowing with nutrient-dense produce. Take advantage of these ruby red, antioxidant-rich ingredients!

Watermelon

Watermelon has high water content, so it’s the perfect fruit for hydration. All that water doesn’t mean it’s lacking in powerful antioxidants. Watermelon actually has about 40% more lycopene than raw tomatoes. Lycopene can help curb your risk of cancer and heart disease as well as offers some protective effects against damaging UV rays.

Strawberries

Strawberries add filling fiber to this watermelon smoothie as well as vitamin C and other beneficial antioxidants. Blood sugar regulation, reducing heart disease risk and boosting immunity are just some of the health benefits of adding strawberries to your diet.

Cherries

Cherries are also high in fiber and loaded with antioxidants. These powerful antioxidants may protect against cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes as well as Alzheimer’s. Anti-inflammatory compounds in cherries may help reduce muscle pain and damage.

I really enjoyed this. The watermelon was an unexpected ingredient, and it tastes like summer! The only negative was I didn't remove the membrane from the lime and I dont have a great blender. I will use juice instead next time.

This seemed more of a juice than a smoothie but it did taste ok. The lime caused it to be bitter. I added some squirts of key lime juice to it after blending in hopes of calming the bitterness down and increase the tartness.

I thought this was quite tasty but because I froze the watermelon I had to add a lot of water, which diluted the flavor. It would be good to note NOT to freeze the watermelon in advanced a la what you can do with most other smoothie recipes to help w prep.

The cherries where expensive, but they made the smoothies. I put it in the fridge for a bit until the chia seed got soft. The whole time it was in there, all I could think about was how cool and refreshing it would be. I couldn't stay to wait any long and I went and enjoyed the heck out of the drink. That's another drink that goes in my smoothies file.

I really like cherry-limeade - add watermelon and its even better!! This was delicious. It was a little challenging measuring out whole frozen strawberries, so I think I had a little bit less because I didn't quite pick up any strawberry flavor. This was a bit thin, but perhaps maybe those few extra strawberries will help that. Will definitely make this again and would LOVE it on a HOT day!

Hi Allison! Strawberries are definitely not the star here. They blend in and provide some great background flavors, but if you'd like to have more of a strawberry flavor, you could swap the measurements with the watermelon. 🙂

I was absolutely surprised how wonderful it tastes! I'm not Really a watermelon fan never truly buy it but with this recipe I think the combination was fantastic. For half I put my protein powder in it which is flavored with vanilla and it just simply made it creamy but the flavor was still just as good as withou. I will definitely make this again and probably put it into some popsicle modes Thanks for the great idea!

I don’t think watermelon is as flavorful right now as it will be later in the season. Even so, I really enjoyed this drink. Refrigerating this drink actually improved both flavor and texture for me. I will look forward to making this all summer. It is refreshing and if made ahead it will be delightful to serve guests.

Delicious! Watermelon and cherries are two of my favorite fruits, so I really enjoyed this one! I shouldn’t have froze the watermelon. I had to thaw a while and add extra water to fully blend. I thought we added water to the smoothie, not realizing the water came from the WATERMELON! Lol. I kinda liked the lime, it helped to cut some of the sweetness, but I think I would omit it in the future because as I got to the end it was a little too tart. I’ll definitely make this one again, such a refreshing, sweet treat!

I liked it!! I did add spinach (I usually do, to most recipes, just to add greens) and also some protein powder. After reading some of the comments early this morning before I made it, I was a little bit worried about it being too sweet… But I think the spinach helped and I also added an extra squeeze of lime! With the cherry & watermelon, I love that lime kick. Overall, very refreshing this AM here in hot Alabama and after a morning run! ☺️

Tasty. I doubled the strawberries and used fresh, not frozen. Next time I'll squeeze the lime rather than peel. It didn't blend well.

I always have frozen berries and chia seeds around, so this was a sweet twist on a recipe I already love.

OMG that is one of my favorites. Very refreshing cherries add a nice tartness to watermelon freshness.

Delicious and refreshing for this warm day. We used the cherries our strawberries are gone because they are farmers market strawberries. The taste of cherries was a good balance of sweetness with the refreshing g yellow watermelon.

    I love watermelon
Adding the cherries and strawberries seemed to give a depth to the flavor while letting the watermelon be the star
I did add some mint, chia seeds and vanilla protein powder to make it a meal
I will be making a lot of these this summer!

Enjoyed having watermelon in the smoothie. The overall taste was pleasing but could have used a bit more lime.

I liked the tartness of the cherries. I poured most of the mis into popsicle mold for the grands. I drank a small amount with ground flaxseed on top, another hit smoothie recipe!

Delicious and fruity sweet. More suitable for a quencher on a hot afternoon than a breakfast smoothie.

This was so refreshing and delicious. A perfect summer drink. I used frozen watermelon so had to add quite a bit of water to get it to blend properly which made it thinner than intended (closer to a watermelon juice) but I found it to be even more refreshing that way.

It's pretty-I tasted it and put it back in the vitamix, hemp seeds -I don't use protein mix-lots in those I prefer to skip. And many greens and it was wonderful-yours is a great mix of fruit

Wow! If summer had a flavor, it would be this smoothie! It's refreshing, tasty, and gave me so much energy. This would be great by the pool or at the beach.

I struggled with this one, I had trouble blending it with my non powerful blender as I froze the watermelon with the cherries and strawberries. I defrosted the frozen fruit an hour to blend. At first it reminded me of a margarita slushie? With the watermelon slight taste snd lime in the background but when I added chia seeds snd protein powder I could not taste the lime, it was a creamy slightly vanilla slight watermelon taste.

Sorry you struggled with this one, Cristina. If your fruit is ever too frozen, you can add a little bit of water, although with this one you'd have to be careful so that it doesn't get too watery since the watermelon liquifies, too. Way to go for overcoming the obstacles and following through on day 2!! It sounds like it ended up being delicious! Margarita slushie doesn't sound too bad 😉

We tried today’s smoothie challenge. It is a little bland. I was hoping with the selection of fruit that more of the flavors would come through. I followed the suggestion and added some chia seeds and one scoop of plant based protein powder. We thought that it was good, but felt that it would be better if more of the fruit flavors came through. Thank you.
