Avocado Banana Smoothie Ingredients
- Water is a simple, underrated smoothie base. It keeps the flavor clean, light, and refreshing without overpowering the fruit.
- Avocado adds healthy fats that boost creaminess, help you stay full, and improve vitamin absorption.
- Banana brings natural sweetness and smooth texture that balances the greens.
- Mango adds extra creaminess, masks any “green” taste, and delivers vitamins A and C.
- Protein powder: Adding about 20 grams of unflavored, unsweetened protein powder balances the fats from avocado and carbs from fruit. It helps keep you full, supports muscle recovery, and lets the smoothie’s natural flavors shine without added sugars or fillers.
Expert Tips
We used water as our liquid base to keep the calories down, yet you can use almond milk, oat milk or even coconut water with this avocado smoothie recipe.

Step-by-Step Instructions
- Add water and spinach to a blender and blend on high until completely smooth. This helps break down the greens for a creamy base.
- Add avocado, frozen mango, and banana, then blend again until thick and creamy.
- Adjust with more water if needed, taste, and add a squeeze of lemon or lime if desired.
- Add in protein powder and blend on low until thick and creamy to minimize aeration
- Pour and enjoy right away for the best flavor and texture.

Ingredient Swaps
Here’s a few suggestions to help you swap ingredients based on what you have on hand.
- Sweetness: Mango or pear (instead of banana).
- Creaminess/Protein: Greek yogurt.
- Avocado Replacement: Cashews or coconut cream.
- Mango Alternatives: Pineapple, peach, or berries (strawberries or blueberries)

Smoothie Add-Ins
Feel free to experiment by adding other ingredients to this smoothie. Here’s a few I would suggest trying with this avocado banana smoothie recipe:
- Chia seeds: A tablespoon or two adds a boost of fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein. They have a mild flavor and thicken the smoothie slightly.
- Kale: Don’t be afraid to add more greens! Kale is a nutritional powerhouse with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium and antioxidants.
- Ginger: A small piece of fresh ginger adds a zesty kick and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Add more liquid, such as water, milk (dairy or non-dairy), or juice, a little at a time, and blend again until you reach your desired consistency.
Yes, as long as the avocado isn’t overly brown or mushy. A slightly soft avocado is fine for blending.
While the banana contributes sweetness and creaminess, you could try using mango, pear, or even a bit of honey or maple syrup for sweetness. The texture might be slightly different.
Yes, frozen avocado chunks are available and work well in smoothies. They also help make the smoothie colder and thicker.
Yes! The bananas and avocados lend a creaminess to the whole smoothie while boosting the fiber and adding some natural sweetness for a quick energy boost. Avocados are rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, reducing cardiovascular disease risk. They’re also rich in potassium, essential for balancing blood pressure.
They sure do. Bananas and avocados blend into a creamy, subtly sweet mix, ideal for smoothies. The banana’s sweetness masks the avocado’s mild flavor, creating a delicious and nutritious combination.

I thought it was good!
A tasty way to drink some green veggies. I will add it to my rotation.
Not bad. I used a handful of spinach+spring mix (because straight raw spinach is difficult on the liver) and I would add more mango. I don’t measure, I just eyeball. I think mine would have been better with a more ripe banana! Learn a little every day! Overall though … pretty good. OH and I added some flaxseed…
Good taste after som refrigeration
If you like thick and creamy, this smoothie is for you. Flavors are fantastic. I took a star off because the avocado makes it too thick for my liking.
It was surprisingly good. Next time I’ll add more frozen mango.
I really like this one
I used chard instead of spinach (from the garden) and it was quite nice. Never used mango before!
Not enough veggies. So, I added zucchini and riced cauliflower.
First time putting avocado in a smoothie…and I do love avocado and guacamole so the taste is not an issue. It really made this smoothie smooth lol but also used a Vitamix which helps. I like the subtle not too sweet but no grassy taste either. It’s just right. I got a new smoothie in the mix
..thank you!
Loved this smoothie! Perhaps the best “green” recipe I have ever had!
Way to add more plants, Darcy!!
Wow!!! You talk about smooth!!! Love the flavors and I can taste the mango, yummy!!!!!!
A great start to a great smoothie challenge!!!!
I subbed kale for the spinach, because oops. But it still turned out great. My 8 y/o son told me it tastes like one we’ve gotten at a smoothie shop before.
When the kids approve, it’s a win! Great job, Catherine!
Wasn’t sure about the green color, but yummy! Even my husband liked it
I love how creamy and simple this smoothie is! It has just the right amount of sweetness as well in case you are looking for smoothies with less sugar.
This is the first time I have used avocado in a smoothie – it definitely makes it thick and creamy! I also used coconut water and added a plant protein powder.
It was filling and good.
Super smooth and filling!
The avocado banana smoothie is just ok. It’s not bad, but it’s not as exciting as many others I’ve tried from SGS.
A nice combination that is not too sweet!
You know everything in this smoothie is great for you! I used coconut water and added a protein powder.
It came out a little thick but I added more coconut water.
So good!
