Ingredients for making detox island green smoothie. coconut water, pineapple, mango, banana, spinach, and orange.

Ingredients You’ll Need

While the ingredient list of this detox island green smoothie is somewhat flexible, this is my favorite combination. It’s simple, delicious, and packed with nutrients that work well for my body.

  • Spinach leaves: A smoothie staple, spinach adds a mild, earthy flavor and vibrant green color. Look for fresh leaves in the produce section, and opt for baby spinach for a milder taste that blends seamlessly. You can also freeze spinach so you always have some on hand.
  • Unsweetened coconut water: Light and refreshing, coconut water brings a hint of natural sweetness and tropical vibes to your smoothie. Look for unsweetened varieties in the beverage aisle or refrigerated section.
  • Orange: Juicy and bright, fresh orange adds citrusy sweetness and a burst of zest. Choose oranges that feel heavy for their size with firm, smooth skin for the juiciest results.
  • Pineapple: Sweet and tangy, pineapple chunks add a tropical twist to your smoothie. Use fresh pineapple for the brightest flavor or look for frozen, pre-cut pieces for convenience. This is the best way to cut pineapple if you’re using fresh.
  • Mango: Mango brings a creamy texture and luscious sweetness. Choose ripe mangoes that yield slightly to gentle pressure and cut mango like a pro! Or, pick up frozen mango chunks for an easy addition.
  • Banana: Ripe bananas add natural sweetness and a smooth texture. Use fresh for a lighter smoothie freeze bananas for an extra creamy and thick consistency.

How to Make a Detox Island Green Smoothie

This detox island green smoothie is as simple to make as it is delicious. Packed with leafy greens and naturally sweetened fruits, it’s a great way to fuel your day. Here’s how I make it:

  1. Measure the coconut water and pour it into the blender as your base. Peel the orange, remove any seeds, and add it to the blender along with the spinach.
  2. Blend the spinach, coconut water, and orange together on high speed until the mixture is completely smooth and free of any leafy chunks.
  3. Peel or chop the fruits as needed, ensuring they are ready to blend. Add the prepared fruit to the blender, layering it on top of the blended spinach mixture.
  4. Blend again, starting at a low speed and gradually increasing to high until the smoothie is creamy and fully combined.
  5. Pour the smoothie into glasses and serve immediately for the freshest flavor.

Blending Tips

A healthy detox Island green smoothie ready to drink.

Fruit Sugar vs. Refined Sugar

While refined sugars digest quickly and cause sharp blood sugar spikes, fruit sugars are metabolized differently. Natural sugar in fruit has vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients, and dietary fiber. The gradual digestion promoted by dietary fiber prevents rapid blood sugar spikes and ensures a steady release of nutrients into the body. You will stay full for longer and that same dietary fiber will help with keeping you, ahem–regular. Here’s my list of low sugar fruits.

Easy Swaps and Add-Ins

  • Add frozen fruit: For a cold smoothie, include at least one frozen fruit, or serve it over ice.
  • Add protein powder: For an added protein boost, mix in a scoop of homemade protein powder to help fuel your day or post-workout recovery.
  • Swap coconut water: Regular water may be used as a substitute for coconut water, if desired.
  • Swap bananas: Avocados make a good, less sugary substitute for bananas. Here’s how to cut avocado.
  • Swap spinach: Use any of your favorite leafy green vegetables instead of spinach.

This has been my favorite smoothie this round (so far). I’ll admit I did substitute strawberry for the banana and cut the orange back and used water instead of the coconut water. Absolutely loved it!

What a tantalizing tong treat! Loved this smoothie! Again with the refreshing pineapple and the coconut water together with the orange accent. Amazing!!

  3. 5 stars
This, by far, is the best smoothie I’ve made! I did add in a few chunks of fresh pineapple, mandarin oranges, chia seeds, and sea moss gel! Delish and will be a staple for me!

  4. 5 stars
Another great taste! Really enjoyed the addition of an orange. Can’t remember the last time I consumed so much fruit and spinach in one sitting.
    Still Rawking it!

    1. The smoothies definitely help you get in tons of fruit and spinach each day!

  5. This smoothie is delicious. It is thicker and I thought that I might make it again and freeze it, to eat it like “nice cream.”

  6. 5 stars
Loved the smoothie…so tropical and delicious tasting. I added protein powder as I am using for a meal. It will be hard to pick a favorite recipe at the end of the week 🙂

    1. Awesome job adding protein powder to make this one a meal replacement, Pamela!

    1. You’re so right, Mandy! The orange def takes this one to another level!

  7. Very good! I like the citrus taste. Easy to make in the blender. Completely satisfying!

  8. 5 stars
I love pineapple and coconut, so this was right up my alley. My husband felt it tasted too tropical, but he doesn’t care for coconut. It did feel like a refreshing treat. I added some plain protein powder because that makes me feel full longer. I’d make this again!

  9. 5 stars
Similar to the day 1 smoothie. Still good. I future I might need to use fresh pineapple to amp up the flavor.

  10. For some reason it was hard for me to find oranges at a nearby store. So instead I made the Avocado Banana Smoothie after perusing smoothie recipes. It’s not the smoothie for this day but I would rate it as a 4 star. Loved the creaminess of the avocado in the smoothie. Today (Day 3 of challenge) I found some blood oranges so I will come back to this smoothie later.

    1. You gotta make the challenge work for you, Mari! Way to rawk!

Really enjoyed the tropical flavor of this one – texture was super smooth and creamy and it made way more than I could drink in one sitting. Put the rest in the fridge and had it later in the day, though I had to re-blend it because it separated.

    1. There’s nothing a little re-blending can’t fix, Sylvia!

  12. 5 stars
Loved the addition of a fresh orange and coconut water – this made the smoothie slightly creamy, which surprised me! I did not notice much of a taste difference from using coconut water v plain water, and was happy for the additional benefits. Yum!

    1. The coconut water is definitely good for hydration in this one!
