Frozen banana adds creaminess and a touch of natural sweetness, perfectly complementing the rich, velvety texture of ripe mango pieces. Ingredients You’ll Need
While the ingredient list of this detox island green smoothie is somewhat flexible, this is my favorite combination. It’s simple, delicious, and packed with nutrients that work well for my body.
- Spinach leaves: A smoothie staple, spinach adds a mild, earthy flavor and vibrant green color. Look for fresh leaves in the produce section, and opt for baby spinach for a milder taste that blends seamlessly. You can also freeze spinach so you always have some on hand.
- Unsweetened coconut water: Light and refreshing, coconut water brings a hint of natural sweetness and tropical vibes to your smoothie. Look for unsweetened varieties in the beverage aisle or refrigerated section.
- Orange: Juicy and bright, fresh orange adds citrusy sweetness and a burst of zest. Choose oranges that feel heavy for their size with firm, smooth skin for the juiciest results.
- Pineapple: Sweet and tangy, pineapple chunks add a tropical twist to your smoothie. Use fresh pineapple for the brightest flavor or look for frozen, pre-cut pieces for convenience. This is the best way to cut pineapple if you’re using fresh.
- Mango: Mango brings a creamy texture and luscious sweetness. Choose ripe mangoes that yield slightly to gentle pressure and cut mango like a pro! Or, pick up frozen mango chunks for an easy addition.
- Banana: Ripe bananas add natural sweetness and a smooth texture. Use fresh for a lighter smoothie freeze bananas for an extra creamy and thick consistency.

How to Make a Detox Island Green Smoothie
This detox island green smoothie is as simple to make as it is delicious. Packed with leafy greens and naturally sweetened fruits, it’s a great way to fuel your day. Here’s how I make it:
- Measure the coconut water and pour it into the blender as your base. Peel the orange, remove any seeds, and add it to the blender along with the spinach.
- Blend the spinach, coconut water, and orange together on high speed until the mixture is completely smooth and free of any leafy chunks.
- Peel or chop the fruits as needed, ensuring they are ready to blend. Add the prepared fruit to the blender, layering it on top of the blended spinach mixture.
- Blend again, starting at a low speed and gradually increasing to high until the smoothie is creamy and fully combined.
- Pour the smoothie into glasses and serve immediately for the freshest flavor.
Blending Tips

Fruit Sugar vs. Refined Sugar
While refined sugars digest quickly and cause sharp blood sugar spikes, fruit sugars are metabolized differently. Natural sugar in fruit has vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients, and dietary fiber. The gradual digestion promoted by dietary fiber prevents rapid blood sugar spikes and ensures a steady release of nutrients into the body. You will stay full for longer and that same dietary fiber will help with keeping you, ahem–regular. Here’s my list of low sugar fruits.
Easy Swaps and Add-Ins
- Add frozen fruit: For a cold smoothie, include at least one frozen fruit, or serve it over ice.
- Add protein powder: For an added protein boost, mix in a scoop of homemade protein powder to help fuel your day or post-workout recovery.
- Swap coconut water: Regular water may be used as a substitute for coconut water, if desired.
- Swap bananas: Avocados make a good, less sugary substitute for bananas. Here’s how to cut avocado.
- Swap spinach: Use any of your favorite leafy green vegetables instead of spinach.

With a good dose of dietary fiber and a whopping 168 mg of Vitamin C, we sure think so! Yet, I know some rawkstars might need a bit less fruit sugar when blending. If that’s you, be sure to check out our Low Sugar Fruits for Smoothies.
Great question! Depending on the greens you use in your tropical smoothie green island recipe, you can end up taking in higher amounts of oxalates, which in turn may cause kidney stones. While this doesn’t happen often, if it’s something you’re concerned about we def recommend staying hydrated with good water and rotating your greens. Changing up your greens on the regular helps to keep from building up any one particular nutrient in your body and ensures you get a wide variety of all those oh-so-good for you vitamins, minerals and more.

I don’t ever add an orange to my smoothie, so this was a nice addition to the flavor. Love it. Thanks!
The orange def puts a nice spin on this smoothie!
Delicious tropical green smoothie!! I added a bit of microgreens with my spinach because I had them. Still tastes tropical fruity and not much greens taste, anyone should like this smoothie!
I bet the microgreens turned out great, Cathy!
beachy!
Tastes like summer, thick and creamy and sweet. yum
Beachy is right, Terri!
Refreshing and easy to make
Glad you like this one, Jeffrey!
Really like this recipe. The orange flavor coming through really adds something.
You’re so right, Faith!
This was a delicious smoothie. Very much like the Best Green Smoothie but with a citrus twist. Loved it. Creamy and nutritious!
The citrus definitely gives this one a great twist, Eileen!
Island green smoothie was smooth, creamy and very filling. If you’re looking for a refreshing, tropical flavor I would highly recommend this drink. The fusion of pineapple, mango and orange is the perfect flavor, with the addition of coconut water. Though next time, I make it, I’ll add a little ginger, for detox.
Let me know how you like it when you add ginger, Sharon!
This is one of my favorites! I love the coconut water and pineapple. I add some fresh ginger and tumeric.
I bet the fresh ginger and turmeric worked out great, Heather!
Another great smoothie. I added the homemade protein powder, well had to substitute hemp seeds until I get the Hemp protein powder, which I just ordered!!
Great way to add some protein to this one, Nichole!
So similar to the Best Green Smoothie but the addition of orange and the coconut water is a delicious twist.
The orange and coconut water def give this one the “island” in island green smoothie!
very good – better than yesterday!
Glad you loved this one, Pam!
Delicious! Makes me want to go on a tropical vacation!
Seriously makes me want to be on an island too, Kathleen!
Day 2 – Delicious! The orange was a flavour booste that made me pucker up in joy! This is such a great challenge! I LOVE it!
Yes! The orange is the star in this one, Kari!
Wow, I’ll be on Island Green time anytime with that smoothie! I had cut a fresh pineapple yesterday that was impossibly sweet in the best way, and the addition of the orange was a great balance. It was my 1st time using coconut water in a smoothie, and won’t be my last! This combo had such a lovely islandy fruity flavor, even with the addition of the homemade protein powder. And apologies if ‘islandy’ is not a word.. let’s just call it a very happy adjective. Go Green!
“Islandy” is the best way to describe it, JuJu!
So good!
Yayy! Glad you like this one, Amy!
Used all fresh fruit for this mornings blend. Very tasty combination. This one was ok for me. A bit too heavy on the acid. Between the orange and pineapple. I can do without. A nice try, and what not to use for me.
The citrusy flavor definitely isn’t for everyone, Cheryl! I completely understand!
I liked this better than the Day 1 Smoothie. However, I did change this up a little too. Instead of coconut water (which I don’t like) here’s what I used. I had some red grapes that had a good flavor but awful texture. I blended them up in my Vitamix to make “grape juice”. So, I used a cup of that instead of the coconut water. I also made this a “meal replacement” as mentioned on the website and added 2 TBS of Quick Oats and 1 TBS of raw Almonds (this amount was for 2 servings). I’ve also been doing the “Fat Burning Smoothie for Weight Loss” at lunch time.
Sounds like your version of this one turned out great, Pam!
This smoothie is delicious. I made it the night before, and it held up well when I had it the next day. It’s filling, so I didn’t end up drinking it too fast even though it tasted really good.
This allowed me to slowly enjoy it and stay satisfied without needing more food before lunch.
I haven’t made mine ahead of time, but it’s great to hear it works!
This is one of my absolute favorites!! It still has the greens and creaminess from the banana, but the fresh orange and coconut water makes it sick a treat and so refreshing!
The orange and coconut water definitely makes this one even more tropical, Leslie!
One of the best tasting and refreshing smoothies I have made. Will make again
Hi Kim! So glad you’ll be making this one again!
